did they really want to look like complete and utter wankers? - Janes Addiction 'Strays'

Yesterday I happened to see the cover art of the new Janes album "Strays" and i was completley shocked by what complete wankers they looked like. pretensious twats. and i find myslef wondering - was perry farrell always such a twat and it was considered acceptable behaviour in the 90s or....

I just can't believe that cover is going to help sell the album? It makes me want to smack him in the head. and then disembowel the lot of 'em.

All these multinational corporations raking in millions (or billions) of dollars. Why don't any of them put some money into a decent design department?

I hate Dave Navarro. That guy just reeks of kill-me-ness.

Navarro's pose on the inner booklet (crouching like some sort of greasy catalogue model about to pounce on a small girl and trap her in his clawlike grip) is even worse. I don't know where to find a picture unfortunately, not that I can be arsed looking, but it's succeeded in making me want to punch one of my favourite guitarists of all time really hard in the throat.

Although the album cover is not the greatest I don't think that you can say the band is terrible because of their picture. I think the music speaks for itself.

You can't help looking like a complete and utter wanker when you are a complete and utter wanker (Dadaismus rather charitably sets himself up for the obvious smartass comeback)

While I was looking around on http://aintnoright.com I found what appears to be an explanation for the horrific cover art on this record. A full account is apparently contained on the DVD which I haven't bothered to watch yet:

"No Perry doesn't preach about drugs and hookers, but he isn't into them anymore. Isn't selling out pretending to be something you're not to make a buck. Perry's grown up, and it's funny how many of his fans haven't. If you're still spouting the same rants and beliefs as you were when you were in your twenties, you need to grow up. Yes the cover of Strays sucked, but if you've seen the DVD, you know what the true cover was supposed to be. A small bird told me that Jane's new record company, Capitol Records, wasn't willing to allow a cover to be released that would be refused by stores. Jane's Addiction is a gamble. It's not 1988 anymore. Jane's isn't the hottest new thing that the whole world is dying to hear. "Well they did it their way before." They don't have the legs to stand on they once did. They gave us new music the best way they knew how, with as much classic Jane's vibe as they were allowed and could muster. Was it worth it? I say yes, you may say no. But that's the true question. Jane's Addiction never sold out. They made compromises. Was it worth it?"

yes. if they had banned the album, we might have been conned into thinking it was actually worth hearing/defending.

Personally speaking, the album is still growing on me. My initial impression wasn't that favorable, but there are certain tracks (notably "the riches" and "Wrong Girl") that are growing on me. Does the cover suck? Well, it ain't exciting.....and not nearly in the same league as their former covers (among my very favorites), but it could've been worse, I suppose. I do think it's the new bass player that is requiring a smack in the face in that pic. But, think of it this way.....if Jane's Addiction are you favorite band, at least they didn't go away for several years and come back with a great album sheathed in a album cover as flatly gawdawful as this.....

I don't think an album cover is enough to brand them as "sellouts".

A friend of a friend worked on a Jane's photo shoot and said they were extremely bitchy about the whole thing. alot of stuff like 'we need to fix the lighting in here because I look old' and 'only shoot me from this side, the good side.' so maybe that has something to do with the great poses on the cover?

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

What's with the scenes of fields and shit behind them?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Perry looks like a cowboy midway through mounting a horse!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave Navarro is as fit as fuck.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, no, Perry looks like he's moseying into a salloon to the tune of "Stayin' Alive" where he intends to dominate the pool tables.

It would have been cooler if he was wearing a trucker hat.
