the "sympathy for the devil remix"

Yakuza Tree Frog, Thursday, 24 July 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't heard the remix, but the Neptunes are really diluted lately. It's like they're trying to respond to Just Blaze and Kanye West by going all Prince with swishy synths and leaden tempos ("Excuse Me Miss," "Just Frontin"). But when they do the bleepy clatter-bounce thing ("Bellydancer," "La La La"), they're still great. And "What Happened to That Boy" is a total breakthrough in quiet, creepy bleak minimalism and one of the best things they've ever done.

'Excuse Me Miss' was great, and their new track for Busta is fierce (they've just discovered reverbed metallic snares, so its a bit like Grindin') but not as good as 'As I Come Back'

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 24 July 2003 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i quite like the rolling stones remix. haven't heard the one by fatboy slim, but this one is ace.

joan vich (joan vich), Thursday, 24 July 2003 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh the Busta track is GREAT

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 24 July 2003 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Busta aside, the stuff I've heard off their new album isn't much cop.

Ben Williams, Thursday, 24 July 2003 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe, but I do think that some of their more relatively recent material does point towards future directions (i.e., What Happened to that Boy), so they could come back on a rebound. This year's been disappointing though, most definitely.

Also, I really hate the Busta track on Clones. Nearly unlistenable.

adam west (adamwest), Thursday, 24 July 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah. The Neptunes are alright. But its time for that Pharrell phag to quit trying to be a star. These days, their beats usually sound like a beat Rick Rock made in a deep sleep and then Pharrell snuck in and tried to be Curtis Mayfield on it. bleh ... I wish they'd go away. They offer nothing new to a great forward-moving artform.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Thursday, 24 July 2003 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

the goofy disco vibe they've been treading for a while is pretty tired, but I think "Frontin'" is almost good enough to redeem it all. "Move Girl" is pretty awesome, although I'm mostly pissed at them for using the same drum sound I did on a track a few months ago.

I'm not really disappointed that they've loosened their chokehold on the radio, though. their gold streak couldn't last forever anyway. I don't think their well of good ideas will totally dry up, the good stuff just might be fewer and further between.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 24 July 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

btw, I think the phrase "jump the shark" finally has itself jumped the shark last week, when Carson Daly told Jennifer Love Hewitt that she "jumped the shark" on that big Carson celebration thingie.

al: best reply to a thread in the history of the internet? possibly.

praying mantis (praying mantis), Thursday, 24 July 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i've never heard the phrase jump the shark before
where did it come from?

robin (robin), Thursday, 24 July 2003 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

It originally referred to the "Happy Days" episode in which Fonzie literally tried to jump a shark in a daredevil water-skiing stunt.

reo fordecor, Thursday, 24 July 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

It was coined by some internet guy who wanted a phrase that describes the point where something cool and exciting reaches a level of success or mainstream visibility that causes it, for a number of different reasons, to lose all coolness and revelence forever. It specifically refers to an episode of "Happy Days," where the Fonz actually jumped a shark while waterskiing, thus killing any subtlety or nuance of character and plotline that the show once offered.

Täp, Mach II -(or) - Jump the Shark

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 24 July 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

and i don't think it applies to the neptunes. they're too spotty to have a streak, totally hit or miss.

reo fordecor, Thursday, 24 July 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

and the phrase obviously wasn't coined by ''some internet guy'' since it originated in the 80's. a journalist, more or less.

reo fordecor, Thursday, 24 July 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

DID HE MAKE IT?

sean g, Thursday, 24 July 2003 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Eyyyy!

The Fonz (Dan Perry), Thursday, 24 July 2003 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I would argue that the phrase didn't really enter the lexicon/public consciousness until the website was put up and started getting attention from the likes of Entertainment Weekly. At any rate, if the Neptunes can still put out stuff like "La La La (Excuse Me Again)", they have not jumped the shark.

Ben Boyer, Thursday, 24 July 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

the thing about jumping the shark is that you have to be sure they'll never be good again. The difference between a stray bad run of episodes and a bonafide turning point for the show. It's far to early to tell with the Neptunes. Frankly, I think they'll never stop making the occasional decent beat (Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis still do, ya know). But then again, I've never seen them as the answer to ANYTHING.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 24 July 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, actually the Sympathy remix is really good, unbelievably. I would never have imagined someone could remix that. And a bunch of the tracks off their new album turn up to be to snuff (love Supercat and Jadakiss particularly). So the Neps still rock, suckas.

Ben Williams, Saturday, 2 August 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

the fatboy remix of sympathy is lame really. just works on the original. poor fatboy.
