I've been out of the loop on ILM for a month or so. What have people been talking about? What's good? Is the Dizzee Rascal album coming out in the US? Just recommend me something and (possibly) justify it. Or just warn me away from terrible music.

in summary:
apparently 2003 has been a terrible year for music, computers suck because they invariably influence (dance) music in a detrimental way, random listage, an 80s metal thread that i haven't looked at yet, the dave matthews thread that would not die and spawned offspring even, trolls trolls trolls, several threads with obviously drunk participants, the debate over undie rap continues, various backlashes against band or genre x, a great thread about dancehall and homophobia, complaints about ilm, not enough threads about the 70s, a thread about derek bailey, threads about david sylvian, apparently 2003 has been a great year for music, etc etc etc

hey someone explain this dizzee rascal thing to me. i think being in the us has something to do with my lack of all comprehension. i also didn't get the streets.. are the two in any way related?

as far as suggestions: british sea power is pretty good, new super furries is excellent as well. not as spaced out as i wanted it to be, but what can you do about that?

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Thursday, 24 July 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

New releases that I like:
Black Eyed Peas - Elephunk (esp. "let's get retarded")
Panjabi MC - Beware
Root Damage - Sympathy Compilation
Soft Canyon - Broken Spirit I Will Mend You (or something similar)
Telepathic Butterflies - Indtroducing the...
The High Dials - A New Devotion

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 24 July 2003 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave Matthews still sucks.

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 24 July 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

birchville cat motel and vibracathedral have ruled all of july for me.

brock (brock), Thursday, 24 July 2003 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Eddie Palmieri's new album has a couple tracks I like: "La Voz Del Caribe" and "Lo Que Traigo Es Sabroso II" (a re-make of a song he did in the 60's).

Al Andalous, Thursday, 24 July 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

and The Exploding Hearts died.

But not before releaseing a killer record.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Thursday, 24 July 2003 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Phantom Power is very good, as is The American Song Poem Anthology.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 24 July 2003 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

welcome back
me: current dancehall in ridiculously healthy state, dubstep allstars, colleen, motion man/kumasta kurt, parmegiani, burning old singles to cd, nurse with wound, andy rantzen.

ilm: kinda dull (thankfully you're back), posters changing their names, wot stu said.

next: what've you been listening to?

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 24 July 2003 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

next: what've you been listening to?

Uhhhh, old Arab Strap, Adult, Phantom Power, Vashti Bunyan, Killer Mike, that "who influenced Captain beefheart" comp, Noriko Tujiko, and errrr, Springsteen's "the River". And The Clientele. And every smoked-out van on my block is playing Sean Paul, and nothing else.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 24 July 2003 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Horace, do you really like Panjabi MC? I was wondering about that one...

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 24 July 2003 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

What is the "who influenced Captain beefheart" comp? and what's on it?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 24 July 2003 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

It's called "Gimme Dat Harp Boy".

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 24 July 2003 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

It has Rahsaan Roland Kirk, lord Buckley, a lot of raw scary blues, but nor Ornette Coleman?

Sorry about the crappy link, Mr Diamond. I think you'd like it, though.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 24 July 2003 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

o...and ilx crashing.

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 24 July 2003 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, Nordic, thanks for the link! Somehow this thing fell under my radar. It's just gone on my wantlist. Yeah, and no Howling Wolf is a bit of an oversight (obviously licensing issues), and there oughta be some Steve Reich on there as well. But I'll pick up anything with Don's voice on it, and I've still yet to hear Robert Petway so his inclusion is a big plus.

Dizzee Rascal is nice ... great beats.

Not very much like the Streets ... Streets is way more "poppier" I would say. Rascal is harder. Ragga style lyrics with HARD beats. check em out.
