Say something interesting about it.

I once covered it using cheap keyboards. No surprise there, then.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Saturday, 26 July 2003 11:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I once turned in the lyrics to that song as an English essay. I got a B+.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Saturday, 26 July 2003 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

It appeared in Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle as a hilarious representation of "Metal"!

When I was young, I had a crush on a girl from Monaco who was a friend of a friend of mine. She loved Jon Bon Jovi, and because of the French connection, I developed an unwelcome crush on Celine Dion.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Saturday, 26 July 2003 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

The following is interesting, but probably only to me. I spent quite some time during the late 80s to convince people that this song was the same as B Carlisle's "Heaven Is a Place on Earth", but Could Not Be Heard. Several years later, along come Orbital.

OleM (OleM), Saturday, 26 July 2003 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

This was one of those songs (not unlike MJ's 'Man in the Mirror') that as a child I would sing and dance along with, with much conviction mind you. Then 'Appetite for Destruction' came out and I realized that learning guitar would get me more chicks than Tae Kwon Do lessons.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Sunday, 27 July 2003 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)

...because of the French connection, I developed an unwelcome crush on Celine Dion.

Don't you mean Gene Hackman?

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Sunday, 27 July 2003 00:52 (twenty-two years ago)

OleM i think you're confusing Livin On A Prayer with You Give Love A Bad Name as it was the latter that Orbital mixed with Belinda Carlisle in their live sets

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 27 July 2003 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

stevem is in the correct. Not only because "it was the latter that Orbital mixed", but because it is it it is.

OleM (OleM), Sunday, 27 July 2003 01:30 (twenty-two years ago)

it's on thrice a day:
my co-worker is a fan
(it's growing on me)

Haikunym, Sunday, 27 July 2003 01:38 (twenty-two years ago)

One of many old-time songs I've only heard karaoke versions of (ditto "You Give Love A Bad Name" & "Dancing In The Dark" & Rhiannon")

etc, Sunday, 27 July 2003 03:05 (twenty-two years ago)

hahaha!! "old-time songs"! Christ almighty.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 27 July 2003 03:26 (twenty-two years ago)

"old-timey songs"!

Yeah, I love the original Reverend Gary Davis version of "Livin' On a Prayer". It is inspirational. Who knew that Richie Samboura was such a student of the blues tradition?

earlnash, Sunday, 27 July 2003 03:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Richie Sambora copped most of his licks from Ishman Bracey.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 27 July 2003 03:38 (twenty-two years ago)

and it's fantastic as karaoke indeed. saw it once done by a pair of guys and the one with the mullet just stood there during the verses staring off to the left but for the chorus belted the high harmony with his eyes shut. a gorgeous sight

mig, Sunday, 27 July 2003 06:48 (twenty-two years ago)

If it 'doesn't make a difference if [they] make it or not' then why the fuck 'hold on'?

dave q, Sunday, 27 July 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

That's the central mystery of life, isn't it?

LIVIN ON A PRAYER

Once upon a time
Not so long ago

Luke Springsteen led the Forces of the Rebel Alliance against the evil Darth Mellencamp...

Tommy used to work on the docks
Union's been on strike
He's down on his luck... it's tough, so tough

...and obviously the dark lord of the silt won...

Gina works the diner all day
Working for her man, she brings home her pay

...and as primary breadwinner, she can demand cunnilingus at any time and he is in no position to balk...

For love - for love
She says: We've got to hold on to what we've got
'Cause it doesn't make a difference
If we make it or not

Then WHY are we working so damned hard!?

We've got each other and that's a lot
Especially considering that Gina weighs 362lbs.

For love - we'll give it a shot
Give WHAT a shot?

We're half way there
Livin' on a prayer

Yeah, yeah. yeah...its all anthemic and shit, but (puts ons black turtleneck and beret) what does it MEEEAAAAAAN, Man?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 28 July 2003 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

The key change always struck me as rather forced. Thanks to karoake nights, ILM, etc. etc. I'm very, very tired of Bon Jovi.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 28 July 2003 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

"make it" = material success, tying into the whole "workin on the docks" (haha first time i wrote that "dicks", 2nd time "focks") thing, he don't need no fancy car, d00d

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 28 July 2003 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

WOAHHHHH you're half way there!

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Monday, 28 July 2003 04:47 (twenty-two years ago)

"what we got" = their love for each other, aww, how sweet, diapers for the baby are just a bonus at that point

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 28 July 2003 04:53 (twenty-two years ago)

The guitar solo is this is brilliant.

For the longest time I thought he was saying "Take my hand, we'll make it elsewhere"

That is the stench of tyranny (VegemiteGrrrl), Friday, 5 November 2010 14:13 (fifteen years ago)

Recently Dead or Alive has usurped this as my favourite Bon Jovi song.

A brownish area with points (chap), Friday, 5 November 2010 14:43 (fifteen years ago)

As a kid, I thought he said "It doesn't make a difference if we're naked or not."

SongOfSam, Friday, 5 November 2010 14:59 (fifteen years ago)

He's right, circa 1986 one would've been transfixed by the hair either way.

A brownish area with points (chap), Friday, 5 November 2010 15:01 (fifteen years ago)

Woaaaaa ohhh!!!!!

historyyy (prettylikealaindelon), Friday, 5 November 2010 15:14 (fifteen years ago)

When I was a kid I thought this song was about "living on a prairie" like my main girl Laura Ingalls. If it came on the radio I would run to my room and put on a fringed leather vest so I was dressed right for it.

17th Century Catholic Spain (Abbbottt), Friday, 5 November 2010 15:18 (fifteen years ago)

The fringed leather vest worked, prairie connection or not.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 5 November 2010 15:37 (fifteen years ago)

six months pass...

I wish I had a box of whippets right now to listen to this with.
