Ian SPACK (Ian SPACK), Sunday, 27 July 2003 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

(I imagine you use 'thusly' ironically, knowing that there is no such word?)

Can I revise those if, after my planned visit to the Virgin Megastore tomorrow, I discover that, say, Futureheads gets a huge display and Robbie is just a couple of copies in the corner? Also if I'm back on here in the next few days, which actually I probably won't be anyway...

edward o (edwardo), Sunday, 27 July 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

interesting range of predictions for Blu & Sean!

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 27 July 2003 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Unless I'm wrong, it's not on the R1 playlist. But that said, I think it's been a big seller on import... which make end up making me look very silly (basic guide to WBS' form thus far: I've just caught up to Billy Dods. He hasn't played for the past two weeks).

no.18 _ R. Kelly

Neil, Sunday, 27 July 2003 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

...oh my. I'll not predict until I've done the customary Woolworths peek, are we still allowed to wait for the midweeks?

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Sunday, 27 July 2003 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

If I think two singles both have an equal chance of entering at number 5, can I do this?

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 27 July 2003 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think you can, jel, unless it's c. 1962 again and there are joint positions on the chart every week :).

robin carmody (robin carmody), Sunday, 27 July 2003 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

you can predict the same position for two different singles if you wish, i believe

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 27 July 2003 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I missed the last two weeks so I have some catching up to do. I was right about Appleton though.

lid, Monday, 28 July 2003 10:39 (twenty-two years ago)

So you should be.. I'm getting worse every week after all...

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 28 July 2003 10:57 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm concerned about all these people putting Hot Hot Heat and Funreal FAF in the top 40.. but then all sorts of crazy shit happens these days

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 28 July 2003 10:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll make my decision later, but you are all underestimating Maria Willson. Unfortunately.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 28 July 2003 11:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Jim - they're both Radio 1 playlist types (HHH B-List, FFAF C), and as such low top 40 entries are possible.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 28 July 2003 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

HHH's last single went Top 30 IIRC.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 28 July 2003 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

#24, got pulled from the R1 playlist cos it was called Bandages and there was a war on. Nearly linked to NME story on this with the heading "REAL CASUALTIES OF WAR REVEALED" (my headline not theirs), but that might have been a bit tasteless. Maybe.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 28 July 2003 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

the thing is its very hot in Iraq right now so Hot Hot Heat is a bit insensitive considering the squalid conditions our brave troops are facing out there.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 28 July 2003 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

can't understand how Robbie could get another number one, esp. with Lumidee and Blu & Sean providing strong competition - what is it with third/fourth singles off big albums by big artists always seeming to do better than second singles?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

ROBBIE WILLIAMS - Something Beautiful #1

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Right. THere is midweek gossip on the Popjustice boards. And it makes me look an utter, utter div.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

hopefully that means you wish you'd swapped Maria Wilson and Blu & Sean's positions around

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

This week's teensy weensy clue - aside from possibly Dom, there is one record we have all SEVERELY underestimated (it's not Maria Willson, BTW)...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

It's really crap and probably shortsighted of me to stick as closely to the midweeks as I am doing but I will because I CAN.

ROBBIE WILLIAMS - Something Beautiful - #3
LUMIDEE - Never Leave You - #2
LISA MAFFIA - In Love - #15
JUNIOR SENIOR - Rhythm Bandits - #23

#18: 'Fast Food Rockers'; and how hideous.
#1: Cantrell/Paul.

Tom May (Tom May), Saturday, 2 August 2003 12:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope I am wrong! I simply tried to suppress my romantic instincts (ie for "Breathe" or "Never Leave You" to hit number one) because I know how wrong I can be when I go too far that way. I remember a similar thing I used to do privately when I was 15 - Robson & Jerome's "I Believe" was set to be a new entry at #17 when it was actually heading for #1, Pulp's "Disco 2000" was poised to go straight in at #1 while Michael Jackson's "Earth Song" sank like a stone ...

robin carmody (robin carmody), Saturday, 2 August 2003 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Hot Hot Heat straight in at #38, apparently.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Sunday, 3 August 2003 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Yup - 10 each for Lid & Dom, 1 each for Ed O & Tom May.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 3 August 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Dandys #34 - I GOT 10! For the first time in, like, yonks... Alex also gets 10, Jel, Siegbran and, for the first time, Neil FC score 1.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 3 August 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Maria Willson is #29. Mitchell scores 5.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 3 August 2003 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Hurrah!

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Sunday, 3 August 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex gets 10 as Junior Senior are denied by SCUM. At #23.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 3 August 2003 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, #22. So he only gets 5.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 3 August 2003 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I get 10!

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Sunday, 3 August 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

FFAF are #19. 1 for Alex.

Eminem is #18... 10 each for Mitchell and Mr Dods.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 3 August 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Lisa Maffia is #13. Big time action - Mitchell scores ten to Alex's 1, and goes top by two points...

Also - Lid gets 10 and goes third, Jacob, Joni and me score 5, and Ed O gets one.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 3 August 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Craig David #8 - 10 for the Siegbran, 5 for me, Tom May, and Robin Carmody (first points ever), and 1 for... lots of people.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 3 August 2003 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Kosheen screw us all over, probably not for the first time, by going #7. Alex gets five, Dom gets 1.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 3 August 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Robbie at #3! damn, I wish I'd gone with my romantic instincts now ... but well done Tom!

robin carmody (robin carmody), Sunday, 3 August 2003 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Robbie is our friend, however, by going in at #3. 10 for Alex, Mitchell, Steve and Tom, 5 each for me and Jacob, and 1 for everyone else. Booty whoop.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 3 August 2003 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

so, my best showing thus far is 5 for Craig David (god I was wrong about Funeral For A Friend - probably put off by their shitty name) ... now if Lumidee goes to #1 I get 10 for Blu & Sean ...

robin carmody (robin carmody), Sunday, 3 August 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

nope ... so from my first attempt at this five finger exercise I get 5 for Craig David, Lumidee and Blu & Sean, and 1 for Robbie, n'est-ce-pas? all my other guesses are wrong, sometimes quite embarrassingly so ...

robin carmody (robin carmody), Sunday, 3 August 2003 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Lumidee is #2, Blu & Sean top it. The Futureheads come in at 58, so I'm over the moon. Didn't score anything off it, and neither did anyone else, but they're #58. They rock. Total scores, new picks etc. in a little bit.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 3 August 2003 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

today's top 3 is a wonderful consolation for me

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 3 August 2003 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

that bit in the maria willson single where the guitar imitates a
wolfwhistle makes me cringe inside every time i hear it. and that
line about picking curtains in ikea.

joni, Sunday, 3 August 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

wot no Relaxed Muscle? tsk

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Sunday, 3 August 2003 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes! I must say i was really pleased (not just for the points ;-)) to see Lumidee and Blu/Paul beat the ubiqitous Mr Williams. I did just sense he wouldn't quite have a #1...
Disappointed i was so far off the mark with Junior Senior though... it's probably too good a pop-dance record for mass consumption... despite the massive and lengthy success of "Move Your Feet", which I did think would swing it.

Tom May (Tom May), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

In Virgin, the Junior Senior single was only available on 12". That must hurt sales.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 9 August 2003 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)
