Jockey Slut "Disco Punk et al" cover-mount CDs

So having never actually heard any of them, but having seen them a lot and almost but not actually having bought, what is it, seven issues of Jockey Slut now just for the cover CD, I'm curious--are the CDs any good? (Jockey Slut is widely disparaged on ILx, I'm sure for good reason, so I'm in no hurry to read the mag.) Does anyone have them all? What are they like?

Very diverse bits and bobs from small dance and hip-hop labels like Playhouse, Lex, Scenario, Output, Leaf, Skint, Wall Of Sound, Source, Klakson etc. I discovered one of my favourite tracks of 2003 on Vol. 7, namely Freek by The Flaws featuring MC Chickaboo (which appeared later as a 12" on Bitches Brew). I like Jockey Slut.

There was one with a really great looking tracklisting which I thought "right, this time I'll buy it even if it's Jockey Slut" and when I went to the newsagent it was the next issue and the CD had UNKLE on :(

So I don't know either, sorry Matos.

jockey slut is a very, very dud magazine that covers a reasonable amount of good music extremely badly and also a lot of MOR rubbish, too. then again, i have a bit of a checquered history w/ this publication so don't necessarily take my word for its quality. they do have some good writers, too and occasionaly pull something halfway decent out of the bag, but mainly its an ironic acid-house-obsessed lad mag that misses the point almost entirely. however, they appear to have gone wholeheartedly for the NY, DFA-style axis of stuff and apparently have 2ManyDJs on the cover of this issue, about 2 years too late... the cds are ok but i wouldn't buy the mag for them personally, just coz it would meant giving mney to a lot of folx i don't like!

so here then is the real nut of my ?--anyone (1) have them and (2) willing to burn them for me?

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 28 July 2003 09:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I've got most of them scattered somewhere. I usually find them pretty entertaining but rarely feel the urge to play them more than once.

Current issue's tracklisting;
Psychonauts - Hips for Scotland
Calexico - Woven Birds (Stratus remix)
Broadway Project - Sufi (soulsavers remix)
Blake - Blakes theme
Prefuse 73 - End of the biters - international
Aceyalone - takeoff
Amateur night in the big top - the story
Big 200 - Let it bleed (original)
Grafiti - What is the problem (Zongamin remix)
Duplex - Subconscious.

If you want any burned email offlist.

I think Dave is very hard on Jockey Slut.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 28 July 2003 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I think maybe people are very hard on it because it has no reason for being so blinkered except that it chooses to be. With Mixmag there's a definite focus on superstar DJs, clubs and Ibiza which explains its editorial shortfalls; Jockey Slut has all the ingredients to be the best dance mag and still gets outclassed by any random dance music article in Sleazenation, The Face or Fader (all of which are merely dabbling!).

Like, their practice of getting the opinions of other DJs and producers on the highlighted reviews would be really interesting if they didn't 9 times out of 10 choose a conservative producer from another genre who's only gonna give it a backhanded compliment.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 28 July 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

i always admit to my biases ronan! i am hard on it but that's because it could be good if it wasn't run buy such an arrogant, blinkered, boorish shower of fuckwits!
