I am unable to meet this challenge.

At least Phil Collins didn't sing this song instead?

Larcole (Nicole), Monday, 28 July 2003 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Or Steven Bishop or Michael Bolton or...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 28 July 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

This is one of those songs that Sarah and I always end up singing in dramatic diva voices when on long car trips. The other fave for this activity is "I've Had the Time of my Life" from the Dirty Dancing soundtrack.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 28 July 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

She gets a nice ring going in her voice on the "FLYYYYYYYYYYYYY, FLYYYYYYYYYYY, FLYYYYYYYYYYYY Away..." part.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 28 July 2003 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

It's on the Beaches soundtrack, along with that song about the over-the-shoulder boulder holders.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 28 July 2003 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

It does end eventually

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 28 July 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

we had to sing it at our eighth grade graduation. if you think that bette's rendition is bad, imagine it as sung by 44 preteen girls!

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 28 July 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Andrew Lloyd Webber makes no money off of it.

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Monday, 28 July 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

KISS has never tried to whore it out for money...

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Monday, 28 July 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

its always funny to nonchalantly quote the chorus to your friend on walks.

chaki (chaki), Monday, 28 July 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

its hilarious

stevem (blueski), Monday, 28 July 2003 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

ditto to chaki's post

Felcher (Felcher), Monday, 28 July 2003 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

It's sweet, but I prefer Kelly Osbourne's "More Than Life Itself" which shares a similar sentiment but is less poised about it.

Also, I always liked that KITH skit where Bruce McCullough recommends you let alcohol be the wind beneath your wings.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 28 July 2003 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I usually opt for the 'did you ever know that you're my hero' line.

oops (Oops), Monday, 28 July 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Oops, that's the beginning of the chorus!

Captain Butter Underpants (Dan Perry), Monday, 28 July 2003 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Aside from theswooping "fly..." part that Dan inexplicably complimented above, it's Midler's tuneless, meandering interpolations at the end ("Thank you, thank God for you...") that are uniquely terrible. I've heard very few more egregious examples of a singer straying so far beyond her talents.

amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 28 July 2003 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

For some reason I feel no shame in not knowing that, Dan.

oops (Oops), Monday, 28 July 2003 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

some say love
it is a river...

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 28 July 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

(i have a bette midler backstage laminate pass/sticker on the back of one of my guitars to prevent copious scratching from belt buckles/fly buttons. she's striking an 'outrageous' pose with her mouth agape and her arms outstretched and skyward.)

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 28 July 2003 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

no.

What are you talking about? I mean, okay, that line is terrible and meandering, but it isn't tuneless. Also, a half-step glissando is harder to do than it sounds (pacing that small of a pitch change over several beats of music = good job, Bette).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

[set-up] what's the difference between 10-cd and 12-cd people?

Kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)
