does anybody else think it should have been The Gathering or Lacuna Coil instead of them?

manuel, Tuesday, 29 July 2003 06:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The Gathering, yes, definitely... at least if it had happened a few years ago.

Lacuna Coil? No, not at all. At the time, their first EP was OK, but little else, but it went straight downhill from there, leading them to be , IMO, one of the most horrible 90s metal bands, right down there with the likes of Moonspell.
Nightwish have gotten pretty popular, and I'd much rather hear them constantly than Evanescence, even if they bug me a bit too (but it seems every rock-band does these days, as someone here nicely put it: "Øystein hater moro", hah!)

Yay for stupid blathering.
I think Azigza should've been the big female-fronted rock band to get popular, but they don't have that hip metally vibe.

Meanwhile, on my streak of negativity: The new Iron Maiden cover art is the most ridiculous garbage I've seen in a long time.

Øystein Holm-Olsen (Øystein H-O), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 07:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I love Evanescence, but everyone I know HATES them.

Who cares if they're a put up job or if the bloke on the single is doing an average Mike Patton impression?

The piano bits, esp on trk 1, are great; the production is awesome and there are even a couple of songs that sound like Tori Amos.

What more could anyone want? A hot goth girl who can sing? They've got one of those as well!

mei (mei), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 07:23 (twenty-two years ago)

an average Mike Patton impression

more like a below-par MC Miker Gee impression

M Carty (mj_c), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 08:26 (twenty-two years ago)

BTW, I've only heard their hit single.
Mike Patton impression though? Is that in one of their other songs?
Isn't Mike Patton's career basically him doing impressions of guys like Eye and Stratos anyways?

Ahhh, the good ol' "this musician is really just a ripoff of that musician" argument. I'm an internet message board poster!

Øystein Holm-Olsen (Øystein H-O), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 09:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Mike Patton: a good person after all, Dude Evanescence: not a person at all.

Swygart to thread.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 10:03 (twenty-two years ago)

The MPI is in the single. Didn't say it was a very good MPI.

mei (mei), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

the first time i heard their hit single i couldn't believe how incredibly cheesy that song was. and then they became bigger and bigger and bigger... and lost faith in the charts again.
i know this isn't a C/D thread, but: DUD!

joan vich (joan vich), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Evanescence are great. So are Lacuna Coil. However Nightwish are better than any band mentioned on this thread.

why does she look like a raverhaired thora birch in that pic?

Kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Evanescence's "Bring Me to Life" the evil sibling of Natalie Imbruglia's "Torn"?

Also, they're crap and spend too much time bending the binding of Bibles.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

and that video! ergh!

joan vich (joan vich), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm nominating them for worst new band of the year.

reo fordecor, Tuesday, 29 July 2003 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate Evanescence. I hate "nu" metal. And I hate that I hear their single 100 times a day because it is played non stop on every radio station, blasting out of frat boys' cars. I doubt the band can even stand that song anymore.

Chesnick, Tuesday, 29 July 2003 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Which single is everyone talking about?

I keep catching a video that seems to not just be on heavy rotation, but weighty, portentous rotation, yet I can't help myself -- I like it. The song's okay, but nothing special. The video features the band on stage and the singer keeps seeing the occasional face turn all scary and demonic (like an Aphex Twin video!), then she swims with some jellyfish and manages to sing without any glug, glug sounds whatsoever. Then the entire audience temporarily turn into demons, before a (predicatably) creepy "twist" ending.

She sounds more like Enya fronting a nü metal band (or like someone drizzled the DNA of Clannad into the test tube marked "Linkin Park"), so I've just coined a new microgenre: Nü Age.

David A. (Davant), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

David A., you made my day. i'm gonna call it Nu Age from now on, it describes perfectly why i don't like evanescence.

joan vich (joan vich), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 08:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Nu Age? More like Su Age! Bahahaha. I'll be here all week. Try the veal. Tip your waiters!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I like that tune better than pretty much all other nu metal on the radio.

But yes, it should've been the Gathering. I heart Anneke von Giersbergen (though I haven't heard their last couple albums).

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

It's been a long time coming but I think Evanescence have finally filled that Nu Metal shaped hole in my heart.

mei (mei), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

C'mon, talk more about Amy and Ben.

Like why, if Amy _is_ a good piano player, did someone else play them on the album?

mei (mei), Friday, 1 August 2003 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I know someone who thinks this song has good lyrics

Sonny A. (Keiko), Friday, 1 August 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Maaan...Just one? I must live smack dab in the middle of the fan club headquarters then. DUD.

it was one of those lines that (deliberately?) misled ppl into thinking they were a christian rock band

markers, Monday, 8 July 2013 00:50 (twelve years ago)

oh ok, i thought you were suggesting it was pedantic/annoying of me to point out a wrong lyric when most of your post was obviously not trying to be super accurate.

i just felt like pointing out that one b/c the christian rock thing was kinda interesting... anyway that part of the song is classic, lol
