adam b (adam b), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

My favourite soul song is "Baby I Need Your Loving" by The Four Tops. One of the reasons I love it is that it's one of the few Tops songs where Levi Stubbs sounds defeated, and that can't help but humble you too.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

A very tough question, liable to change daily. Jonathan's suggestion would come close (as I was listening to Curtis Live just the other day).

So if I can name a few:
Al Green - How can you mend a broken heart
Marvin & Tammi - You're all I need to get by
Charlie Rich - When something is wrong with my baby

James Ball (James Ball), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh God, far too many but hello to "Belle" by Al Green also "In Your Power" by Joe Odom for the obscurantists among you.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Baby Huey and The Babysitters: "Runnin'"

(Which I guess I could write off as my favorite "psychedelic soul" song and choose again, but to what end?)

I want to start collecting older r&b and soul. I wish I knew some of the better obscure stuff. The radio seems to only play the all-time classics.

nicky lo-fi (nicky lo-fi), Friday, 7 July 2006 07:26 (nineteen years ago)

You want to start with Dave Godin's Deep Soul Treasures. Four volumes, 100 songs, some of the greatest music you'll ever hear in your life.

My vote goes to the final track on volume one: "You Got Me" by Jaibi. Listen to that, swim in it and then talk to me about Mariah bloody Carey...

Thanks for the Dave Godin recommendation! That does look pretty awesome. It also looks like the late Mr Godin left behind a very informative website.
