This is the thread where we hate on the D Plan

Let's name our reasons why they are so bad. Unfortunately, they do not seem to be hated. Not enough, at least.

Aaron A., Tuesday, 29 July 2003 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

They are SO fucking emo, for one. Every song.

Aaron A., Tuesday, 29 July 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

that "you are invited song"
first it was cutesy, now it's just stupid.
i have to say though, they're a hell of a talented band. remind me of what the talking heads would've sounded like if david byrne were brain damaged and much too melodramatic. but past the singing (and some of the piss poor melodies, really, youd think guys this talented could write better hooks) they're quite enjoyable.

Felcher (Felcher), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree with you on all points I guess... But I just see them as a fully potentiated Braid, which ain't saying much.

Aaron A., Tuesday, 29 July 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

"ice of boston" - if ever a song was written strictly to get me to turn off my radio, this pathetic gob of emo mucous was it.

your null fame (yournullfame), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

and i am SO FUCKING HAPPY they're breaking up.

your null fame (yournullfame), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

hate threads are always so sad

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

life's too short people

unless you're getting paid for it

or they fucked your girl or something

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

When you really don't like a band and have NEVER found anyone to sypathize, reading a post like your full name's first one there is enthralling. All is right with the world again.

Aaron A., Tuesday, 29 July 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

In the You Are Invited song, Travis pronounces 'invited' like Michael Stipe would! Eww!

Travis posts political commentary to his website! Thanks!

Aaron A., Tuesday, 29 July 2003 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I like them -- esp. "Ice of Boston," which is as good a New Year's Eve song as anything by Scrawl or Blue Oyster Cult. But I STILL think it's weird how much they sound like the Dave Matthews Band.

chuck, Tuesday, 29 July 2003 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw them do their "farewell" show in DC last night, a free gig at Fort Reno Park before 500 plus kids on rainy rainy night. At times they reminded me of everything that annoyed me about Primus as well as everything that bugged me about early 80s prog-rock and jazz-fusion (self-indulgent stiff herky-jerkiness)but then Morrison would mix in an emo pop-catchy vocal line, and the guitarist would throw in a Fugazi-like riff and the crowd would roar(and I thought to myself well they're ok but not great I guess)...

Steve Kiviat (Steve K), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

hate threads are always so sad

as are simpering "jesus christ this is the best band on earth and they're breaking up and i'm crying about it" threads where people get reamed for not expressing the proper amount of love about said band.

your null fame (yournullfame), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i saw them for the only time at their last los angeles show in june and it was one of the best shows i've seen in years, especially when travis invited all the children to dance on stage for "ice of boston". you'd really have to hate fun not to love it.

dan (dan), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

>>...as well as everything that bugged me about early 80s prog-rock and jazz-fusion (self-indulgent stiff herky-jerkiness)but then Morrison would mix in an emo pop-catchy vocal line, and the guitarist would throw in a Fugazi-like riff<<

I always thought Fugazi (one of the most overrated bands of the '90s, easy) and self-indulgent stiff herky-jerkiness were the same thing!

chuck, Tuesday, 29 July 2003 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

to love all fun is to love no fun

Aaron A., Tuesday, 29 July 2003 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

If it wasn't for hate threads, I would never have discovered that Chuck Eddy dislikes Fugazi but likes Northern State, which is hilarious to me.

Ben Boyer, Tuesday, 29 July 2003 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I tend to prefer music that doesn't sound duller than dirt and dead in the water. Also, I like stuff that moves a little. But I see what you're saying. I guess.

chuck, Tuesday, 29 July 2003 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

b-but according to blake butler, "none will ever do justice to the anthemic beastly passion that Fugazi somehow puts into everything they do"

brains (cerybut), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 21:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Chuck out of curiousity, what Fugazi have you heard? I don't expect you to adore them (mushmouthed no-fun lyrics, somewhat sludgy), but when you talk/write about them, it sounds like you're merely reacting to hype rather than the actual music, which has evolved quite a bit over the years.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't REMEMBER what Fugazi I've heard, Anthony. I mean, I tried to keep up with them through the '90s, and they NEVER sounded like what people made them out to be. (Especially when people through around words like "dub" or whatever.) I never HATED them; they just always seemed dull dull dull. The rhythm just sat there and ploddded like a dead wet frog. A GREY one; they never even had the sense to be GREEN, for Crissakes! (Actually, I have no idea whether dead wet frogs plod, bur who cares.) I guess they were *trying* to do something; I dunno. I could never figure out what. Maybe the production just sucked a rat's ass and I couldn't HER them. But now there seems to be a ton of bands people compare to them, and they seem just as boring, too...but again, I guess they were vaguely PLEASANT, sometimes. An interesting singer, or a pretty melody now and then, might have helped. (Which isn't to say they might not have interesting or pretty or grooving stuff I never heard. I sure as heck wouldn't expect them to, though.)

chuck, Tuesday, 29 July 2003 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

through = threw

couldn't HER = couldn't HEAR

and so on.

chuck, Tuesday, 29 July 2003 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, though (to answer your ?) I probably heard the early stuff (before I through/threw up my hands in what-the-hell-is-this-spinach desperation) more than the later stuff. But I also heard the album that placed Pazzandjopwise a couple years ago. I didn't get it at all.

chuck, Tuesday, 29 July 2003 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

So I walk into the Red Room bar, and then Morrison would mix in an emo pop-catchy vocal line, and the guitarist would throw in a Fugazi-like riff and the crowd would roar(and I thought to myself well they're ok but not great I guess)...

And I tried to tell you before..
That that's why I left Washington.

daria g (daria g), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

they definitely have moments that grate, but I think they were one of those bands' whose ballsiness somehow made even those moments something to appreciate. not for everyone, and not quite as good at what they do as I wish they were, but I still really enjoy it at times. and on a good night their shows are really wonderful experiences.

I'm tempted to pick fights with the whole "dance punk" craze for kinda doing what the Plan was doing 5 years ago much much worse.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

You know, it's so easy to hate, it's so easy to dismiss things out of hand just for spite. I guess that's why I like doing these things. Many activities are difficult, but hating is easy.

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 00:54 (twenty-two years ago)

it's so easy to hate

It takes guts to be gentle and kind.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 01:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Define last show. Are we talking The Eagles definition or are they really done??

brg30 (brg30), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 02:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Well...the Fort Reno show was supposed to be the last US show. But...the rain caused them to have to shorten their set by almost half. Personally, I think they were always gonna come back for a final show in DC after their Japan tour, but one way or another, they decided that Fort Reno wouldn't be enough of a closer the way it went. So they're going to do some sort of final club show shortly after they get back.

Past that, they've kicked around the idea of playing a once-a-year reunion show for Fort Reno or Fort Reno Benefit, but that's not official, and I personally think that the others will have moved on. It looks like Eric's gonna be full into In English, and Joe's a full time student again.

My personal opinion - though I can't say this for sure, but it was the impression I got from them the last few times I saw them, was that there was a widening gap between Travis and the rest of the band. But I don't know that for certain, that's just speculation. That being said, I don't think there's animosity either. Just that they drifted apart.
