Could Jamie Cullum be the UK's answer to Norah Jones?
Would anyone want jazz in the pop charts?

Other than the fact that she's on Blue Note and uses a piano and augmented chords in her music, I'm curious as to why Norah Jones is considered a "jazz" artist. Certainly nothing that I've heard of her music (and I didn't know who it was when I first heard it, so no preconceptions were operative) would lead me to classify her as a jazz musician. Perhaps a fan can explain?

i haven't heard Jamie Cullum, so I would ask the same question regarding him -- based upon the description, he just seems like a pop musician who listens to jazz. I wouldn't call Steely Dan, Kenny G, Rickie Lee Jones, or Joni Mitchell jazz artists by the same token (although the latter comes closest, at times. Kenny G I would just call shit, but that's a separate issue).

Nothing wrong with jazz in the pop charts -- look at the example of E.S.T. (who really ARE a jazz group) topping the Swedish charts.

I haven't even heard Norah jones, so I don't know, but I read about her a bit on a jazz forum, where someone mentioned that she played several jazz standards on her demo, so I guess that might have something to do with it. Maybe she plays some jazz live too? Or maybe people just hear swell ol' bass and go "my, that's jazzum!"

That's the last thing one of her fans could explain.

does Radio 2 not even play that song anymore?

Blech. I'll reserve judgement until I hear him, but he just sounds young and immature. "Untrained jazz singer and pianist", WTF is that? Trained, untrained, whether you go to school or not, everybody listens and practices just like everybody else.

"funk versions of Gershwin songs"

OH NOW THAT'S AN ORIGINAL IDEA ISN'T IT
