Sun Ra Advice

I notice that Fopp in London seems to have a job lot of three Sun Ra albums: "Outer Spaceways Incorporated"; "Calling Planet Earth" and "Spaceways", all selling for £5. I already have "Outer Spaceways Incorporated" (actually first released as "Pictures of Infinity", as I'm sure all RaFans are aware) and like it lots. "Calling Planet Earth" appears to be a live gig from 1971 and apparently the song titles on the CD are about 100% wrong but what the hell. The one I'm most innarested in buying is "Spaceways". Anybody heard "Spaceways" or "Calling Plaent Earth"?

I have a gig from 1972 (can't remember the title now) but its just wonderful: sun ra with his moog and marshall really getting stuck in is a wonder so you might just want to check that out.

Unfortunately Julio, "a gig from 1972: sun ra with his moog and marshall really getting stuck in" covers about 20 possible albums!

Oh right... I see, you mean all of the Sun Ra albums in Fopp, not ALL of the Sun Ra albums!

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought this was going to be a thread where the old astral jazz fella gave us advice on our problems after consulting the cosmos...

... what a thread that would be!

The Sun Ra movie, Space Is The Place, is coming out on DVD in October, from the same company that put out Style Wars. And this morning I was listening to The Solar-Myth Approach, which is great. That is all.

Dear Sonny,

I'm writing for some advice. I have this itch, real bad...

Those 3 discs were also released as a box-set by Black Lion or Black Saint recs at one time. Word is they are comparable, but the only on e i actually have is the same one you have, Dada... I'm thinking its hard to go wrong here...

I bought "Spaceways" and it's very very good. As ever, when, where, why and how it was recorded are a total mystery. Most of it is supposed to be recorded at gigs in NYC around 1966 but the recording is very professional and doesn't sound like it's just Ra and Bugs Hunter on their trusty portable tape recorder - it's actually in stereo! There is lots of Sonny on piano, which is always a good thing and once again it shows how radically different he was from other heroes of mid-60s avant-jazz, it doesn't sound remotely like anyone else. Anyway, it's a fiver in Fopp in London, buy it.

Doesn't look like it, but there's a bunch of other shows. I think there's at least one of the 1983 All-Stars shows -- that box is phenomenal and somewhat revelatory for revealing Philly Joe Jones to be more in tune with Ra's concept(s) than Archie Shepp.
