*NYCD* is moving......Horrors, `tis the end of an era.

This will mean precious nothing to anyone outside of NYC, but NYCD -- one of the last great CD specialty shops in Manhattan on the Upper West Side -- are moving from their age-old location on Amsterdam between 80th and 81st streets to a comparitively dingey & dank Hobbits' home on 81st beteen Amsterdam & Columbus.

I know, it's not a big move, but it's still a move....and not a positive one.

Is it that bad, Alex? I haven't seen the new site, but apart from location, is anything changing?

Or is it just that change is bad, we fear change etc.? (A position with which I can sympathize, incidentally.)

Change = death

That's what you get for record shopping above 14th Street.

NYCD was formerlly the only reason to venture North of 14th street. I'm sure the new locale will be fine, but it's still a bummer.

Ever been to the CD store on West 18th? Amazing deals. Inventory changes too quickly to really comment on their selection, but it is fair.

you mean Academy, between 5th & 6th? my favorite place to buy & sell in NYC, recommended to everyone

Yeah, Academy you mean. They're nice folks as well, and do pay reasonably for used discs when yer trying to sell'em. Forgot about that one. There's also Midnight Records on 23rd Street, but unless you're an aging garage rocker with a pudding bowl haircut and lots of fading Fuzztones t-shirts in your closet that no longer cover your ever-growing paunch, there's really never a reason to go there.

They aren't as centered around used rock stuff, but I have to throw in a mention of my favorite record store in the city, Downtown Music Gallery on Bowery. Great folks run it, fantastic selection of jazz/experimental and the less orthodox rock, and zero attitude (cf. Other Music, for example).

Great in-stores, too -- one in a couple of weeks with Elton Dean and Hugh Hopper of Soft Machine.

No, I'm not affiliated with them, just like 'em a lot.
