unreleased at the time, anyway. it's on the 25th anniversary thing that came out in the 80s, but why it wasn't a single is a total mystery to me. it has to be one of the best "i'm in love with rock n roll" songs ever:
i'm gonna listen to those d.j. shows /i'm gonna be diggin' that rock 'n' roll /if i don't i'll go insane /i'm gonna listen to those d.j. shows /'cause that's all I like to do

are we ilxers suddenly feeling an urge to make up for the guilt we feel at having our lack of "soul music" discussion pointed out by tom? or has that very accusation made us feel that we can now share our once guilty love of said music freely? not to single you out lauren, im searching for the song on slsk right now.

i wouldn't say it's guilt, exactly, but for me the discussion has definitely opened the floodgates on a genre i love so deeply that i often forget that there's so much wonderful stuff to discuss. kind of like an amazing old friend that gets shamefully taken for granted, i guess...

The idea of someone having 'guilty love' for Motown records is the most fucked up thing I've read since Melissa told us about the guy who has sent 65000 posts to a Radiohead board in 15 months.

What do you mean by 'unreleased single' exactly, lauren? Are you counting album tracks or do they have to be have been totally unavailable?

What other good unreleased singles are there?

as far as i know, "those dj shows" was recorded in the 60s and never released at all until the 25th anniversary comp in '85 or so. i don't actually know if it was intended for a single, but it could have been and imho it should have been - smokey robinson composition, exuberant girl soul vocals, a bit rough around the edges. yum.

After seeing this post I finally got a hold of the track, and it is really that good. I have a bunch of Motown rarities comps, and it's unbelievable how much amazing stuff they left in the vaults, and for that matter is still there.

Can someone recommend some of these Motown rarities compilations? I have the first Cellarful of Motown, and I'm sure Volume 2 is pretty tasty as well, but that's all I know about.

Rare Tracks from Detroit is an 8 CD Motown comp that has just about everything. On a smaller scale, a set that complements the Cellarful comps is the 2 volume Motown Connoisseurs set. And I can't vouch for it as I'm still looking for it, but the Soul Satisfaction series looks pretty good too.

Also, Motown Sings Motown Treasures was released by Hip-O and is amazing. It's worth the purchase price just to hear Stevie Wonder's version of I Hear A Symphony.
