...and i'm not talking about that sahara hotnights shit.

is there anything out there that lives up to holly golightly, liz brady, jacqueline taieb, and april march's more rocking moments ("chick habit," the album with the makers)?

i'm most interested in really crazy, primitive-sounding, fuzzed-out shit like the above.

kenickie "catsuit city"

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 31 July 2003 08:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Gore Gore Girls, though they have quite a handle on melody, so perhaps not as "primitive" as you'd enjoy

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 31 July 2003 12:52 (twenty-two years ago)

search anything by rita chao backed by the quests. (very, very wild singapore 60s garage rock)

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 31 July 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

First Pandoras album, _It's About Time_, still rocks.

mike a (mike a), Thursday, 31 July 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

word to rita chao...

i thought kenickie were just girly british pop-punk.

call mr. lee (call mr. lee), Thursday, 31 July 2003 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

their first ep is a lot more trashy garagey stuff. and i have a hard time describing kenix as 'pop-punk'.. they're really not that rocky.

the best song ever is "what a way to die" by suzi quatro & the pleasure seekers

duane, Friday, 1 August 2003 00:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Whoah, first mention of jacqueline taieb on ILM?

Get those UltraChicks comps from Denis at Le Pick-Up in Montreal!

Oh wait, "beyond the comps." Hm. Well, Le Pick-Up also has a lot of 7"s.

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 1 August 2003 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

the demos on the Feminine Complex reissues surely qualify

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 1 August 2003 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

the bristols, though only the singer is a female. they have a new album soon too.

keith (keithmcl), Friday, 1 August 2003 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

nobody mentioned ms. taieb before me? and i thought the people at ilm knew their shit. everyone i've played "7 heures du matin" for has been floored.

i get the feeling a lot of the girls-in-the-garage bands are only female-fronted.

i've tried to find mp3's by the pleasure seekers in the past, but had no luck.

the continental co-ets were an all-female surfy band from southwestern minnesota, but alas, they weren't very good.

call mr. lee (call mr. lee), Friday, 1 August 2003 05:46 (twenty-two years ago)

as for kenickie, i listened to clips of an album awhile ago and it reminded me more of typical girly rock stuff. kinda like little red rocket, but not as good (i gave away lrr's first album recently).

call mr. lee (call mr. lee), Friday, 1 August 2003 05:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i put that ("7 heures du matin") on a tape and blasted it while driving up and down red arrow highway in michigan this past weekend.

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 1 August 2003 05:48 (twenty-two years ago)

as you should. few yé-yé songs even come close. what other singers are you partial to?

call mr. lee (call mr. lee), Friday, 1 August 2003 05:50 (twenty-two years ago)

my post read their first ep is a lot more trashy garagey stuff. i'm very much aware their later stuff is more straight pop (of the type that pop fans/apologists don't seem to understand)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 1 August 2003 06:06 (twenty-two years ago)

(that referred to kenix btw)

Can I just point out, cause I don't think it'll be obvious to non-UK people, that 'bristols' is a euphemism.

mei (mei), Friday, 1 August 2003 06:35 (twenty-two years ago)

the international telepaths!! (if they count: there's some GUY on drums for goodness sake)

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Friday, 1 August 2003 06:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i can only think of a handful of all-female garage bands. 'course they count.

call mr. lee (call mr. lee), Friday, 1 August 2003 07:16 (twenty-two years ago)

there's a loved ones album that's pretty great

cameron, Friday, 1 August 2003 09:39 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah, and from nz the coolies and goldifox on pink air / girl alliance records

I thought the Luv'd Ones albums was kind of bleh.

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 1 August 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

this is going to sound weird, but i recommend getting the "beyond the valley dolls" soundtrack if you can. the carrie nations tracks from the film are killer! i play them on the now-rare occasions that i dj, and they have the same gratifying effect that playing "7 heures du matin" does: people running up to ask what the hell you're playing and complimenting you on your excellent taste.
this probably flouts your "beyond the comps" directive, but it is worthwhile. plus, this is an area in which it's hard to get away from compilations. it was a genre driven by 7"s, so most of the best stuff (and a lot of mediocre stuff, even) has been cherry-picked for things like the girls in the garage series. of the more recent stuff, i quite like the trashwomen and their spinoff, the bobbyteens.

how great are the picture sleeves from french 60s girl pop? i want to frame some of them, but the collector scum devil on my shoulder keeps me from doing any such thing.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 1 August 2003 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

bristols are mammaries, right? the band's still great.

keith (keithmcl), Friday, 1 August 2003 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm thinking of a band comprised of two Japanese girls who worked as strippers in Indiana once they came over to the States. From what I remember they had an EP and an LP, on which they appear in a bathtub as part o' the cover art, or something equally far fetched. I really can't...recall.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Friday, 1 August 2003 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Sheesh, no one has mentioned The Brood yet?

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Saturday, 2 August 2003 09:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i like the 5,6,7,8's. i like mr. airplane man (do they count). i guess you can just review the entire sympathy records catalog and report back.

four years pass...

Jacqueline Taïeb posted to ilx? and misspelled her name? awesome!

"7 Heures Du Matin" may be the coolest song ever, partly because the lyrics are so unglamorous compared to the celebrities she namechecks the crunchy guitar riffs she sings over. losing your toothbrush and trying to decide which sweater to wear aren't really themes that evoke the swinging '60s, and The Who and Paul McCartney are only invoked as incidentals in the speaker's mundane life. the result is a song that's so uncool it's cool. and those riffs!

(although I remember hearing an alternate version of the song on youtube, in which she sings about partying and eating caviar with Mick Jagger. I'm pretty sure it's Jacqueline singing, but I guess it could be a cover. will have to check on that)

as for overlooked/uncomped girl garage, the Daughters of Eve ought to get more recognition, and not just because they were one of the first all-female rock groups. as far as I know, the only songs of theirs that have been reissued are the two that appear on the first volume of Girls With Guitars. "Help Me Boy" is their masterpiece, and as a scrappy 4-5 piece rock group with occasional session musicians, they really had a knack for mimicking the fullness and punchiness of a Phil Spector production.
