Who's really gone out with a bang and reeased a final single that's the best thing they ever did - especially if it's in some way the culmination of their whole career.

Does "Love will tear us apart" count?

Fabrice (Fabfunk), Thursday, 31 July 2003 09:21 (twenty-two years ago)

"Atmosphere" came after that didn't it? (strangely enough I was just posting that as my nomination and crossed with your post!)

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 31 July 2003 09:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Alternatively, "Ice Cream For Crow" was probably the best single Captain Beefheart ever released.

"Saturday gigs" by Mott the Hoople, surely?

Rob M (Rob M), Thursday, 31 July 2003 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

History was pretty good as a farewell I thought.

But then The Verve came back with that other single and album.

if "angel gone" turns out to be beat happenings last single, then i'd nominate that, just seems to sum up everything great about the band. of course i would rather like them to come back and do another single or record or something...

The Bitterest Pill I Ever Had To Swallow

Didn't Beat Surrender come out after that?

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 31 July 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

KISS: Psycho Circus... what a better way to end an original recording career with a pile of shit based on a bunch of evil circus performers... nohing gets me like some angry clowns!

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Thursday, 31 July 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, "Salad Days."

Will people throw things at me if I say "Real Love"?

Douglas (Douglas), Thursday, 31 July 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

"A Change is Gonna Come" -- Sam Cooke

the obligatory "warm leatherette OWNZ this thread!" post

Felcher (Felcher), Thursday, 31 July 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

ABBA's "The Day Before You Came" is gorgeous and wonderful... Not sure if its their best EVER but its great. Seems like an appropriate bow out too. A bit meloncholy, a bit modest, a bit uplifting.

original bgm, Thursday, 31 July 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

The Supremes "Some Day We'll be Together".

Hell of a way to bow out, and the last number 1 of the 60's in the US if I remember correctly. Damn, that Soul music thread is awakening all sorts of memories!

Bill E (bill_e), Thursday, 31 July 2003 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Specials - "Ghost Town"

Hands down. No contest.

Evan (Evan), Thursday, 31 July 2003 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

"i won't share you," the smiths.

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 31 July 2003 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i remember madness's 'waiting for the ghost train' was a particularly bittersweet farewell, one of their most political songs (anti-apartheid) that could also be read as a comment on the frustration they felt at forever being cgaracterised as the 'nutty' boys... the b-side 'maybe in another life' seemed impossible sad to my 11 year old self, like they were singing about a better world where they wouldn't have split up. i was BROKEN HEARTED.

Then they ruined it all with innumerable "one-off" comebacks (mind you, "Lovestruck" v Suggs solo career...)
