i can think of Unrest and Mark Robinson's Henry Cow fixation (both with 'Teenbeat' and "Unrest") and Talk Talk/Mark Hollis' multiple references to Love ("Laughing Stock" and 'The Daily Planet')... but this is just off the top of my head.

Both LL and Wyclef spent waaaay too long on the whole Canibus thing, even when Canibus himself was essentially a nonentity.

This might not actually be the sort of thing you're looking for, but oh well.

To add to the Mark Robinson thing: his publishing company is "Upon Entering the Hotel Adlon Music."

Nick Lowe made a bunch of singles referencing the Bay City Rollers, if that counts...

Lloyd Cole references T Rex quite a bit:
"Ain't No Square in My Corkscrew Hair"
"Man, I Need T.V." (i.e. don't got T-Rex)
"4UMB"

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 31 July 2003 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Laura Borealis found herself being referenced in a couple of Sloan songs early on, but thts so under most peoples radar it doesn't count.

if you consider a choreographer an artist, stephin merritt's got a thing for Busby Berkeley

Felcher (Felcher), Thursday, 31 July 2003 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

bruce springsteen's got a thing for hank williams.

fountains of wayne have quite a thing for billy joel on "welcome interstate managers," from the "sometimes a fantasy" hiccuping on "stacy's mom" to the verse about "just the way you are" on that song late in the album whose title escapes me at the moment.

daniel johnston loves the beatles and loves to say so.
