I wish 'minimal' went in more of a Dan Bell "soulful" direction, I'm starting to get a little bored with sleek European tech.

Chewshabadoo I think there are actually some slight trends in a soulful direction in current minimal - I'm thinking of stuff like Firm Records, Jay Haze, Prosumer...

I have to admit I've only seem him spin once before - a 4 hour set last year, with one of his arms in a sling, meaning he had to take records from their sleeves with his mouth! - he had a definite "garagey" skippy vibe to his rhythyms, and played plenty of gospelly vocally tracks which almost had a Todd Edwards-y sound. He did mix it in with stuff like Room 303 by DJ Koze, and electro-y Bpitch stuff too though.

Will be interesting to see if Portable plays a propper warm-up set or just slams it out like he ususally does. Although I am not going. So someone please report back.

Anyway, from what I can remember he played it a lot more " fast blipping acid minimal" (I haven't been able to stop saying that all weekend when people asked what I was up to on Friday) than the last time I saw him. It was excellent, but he seemed to drop the tempo for the last half hour to mearly blipping minimal. Skippy rhythms were in evidence though, including one track which seemed to be going at 130bpm and 260bpm at the same time... making the floor go crazy.
He is such as smooth DJ though, the way his set was constructed sounded like he was using a laptop, but I think he was just using records; The transitions were seamless, but also seemed to come out on nowhere. He only played for two hours this time, rather than the 4 last year - but I think he played the same amount of records, just was able to change them quicker with the use of all his arms.

Tylero, I take it you never got permission then?
Never mind, here’s a superb 70 minute excerpt from a Dan Bell set from last year:
