I'd like to hear what everyone's ultimate, rock-solid, all-time indie rock mix would be, and why. Those bastards at tinymixtapes.com won't put it up there for me.

I wonder why the K-Tel comp only went to '92 or so (if even that late).

My ultimate indie rock mixtape would have:

Built to Spill - "In The Morning" or "Virgina Reel..." (live)
Pavement - "Pueblo" or "Grounded"
Modest Mouse - "Edit the Sad Parts"
Guided By Voices - "Motor Away"

The songs on the Ktel thing are great, but before my time and not what i think of when i think indie rock. So here goes:
1. "Web in Front"- Archers of Loaf. Quite simply the best indie rock single, in my opinion. Band curiously did not do anything else approaching this. Funny, catchy, short, bouncy, genious.
2. "Ohio River Boat Song"- Palace. The debut and one of Oldham's finest songs.
3. "New Orleans"- Silver Jews. The finest lyric in indie rock: "There is a house in New Orleans/ Not the one you've heard about, I'm talking bout a different house"
4. "Gold Soundz"- Pavement. Really any of the first three Pavement albums could be the mix-tape. Pavement IS Indie Rock. But Gold Soundz has the perfect combination of naivete, intelligence, wit, and irony to be the ultimate example,
5. "Skull"- Sebadoh. Alot of people would probably go for something from the Gafney era, maybe from III. But this is a beautiful song that says to me a lot about what Sebadoh was: sentimental, almost sappy even but good songwriting.
6. "Full Piston Vinegar"- Trumans Water. Why pick a noisy Sebadoh song when you could have the crazy energy of these spazzes.
7. "Doing the Cockroach"- Modest Mouse. Isaac Brock's white trash philospher persona mixed with engaging hard rock.
8. "Car"- Built to Spill.
9. "Tom Boy"- Bettie Serveert. These two are simply really good songs.
10. "Precision Auto"- Superchunk. Loud, fast, melodic. But it doesn't suck.
11. "Superball"- Helium.
12. "Blue Line Swinger"- Yo La Tengo.
13. "Surrender to the Night"- Trans Am. My admittedly controversial post-rock pick, but I think Trans Am are really the best of them. There probably should be a Tortoise song on this.

The Wedding Present "Kennedy"
Pavement "Unfair"
Unrest "Six Layer Cake"
Yo La Tengo "Stockholm Syndrome"
Built to Spill "I Would Hurt a Fly"
Versus "Eskimo"
Neutral Milk Hotel "Holland, 1945"
Go-Betweens "Locust Girls"

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Friday, 1 August 2003 15:50 (twenty years ago) link

except the GBV, which I don't know, Mark's picks (esp. the live "Virginia") are all ace. obviously I'm going to say Lifter Puller--either "To Live and Die in L.B.I." to open it (or jumpstart it again halfway thru) or "Nassau Coliseum" near or at end.

1. "Web in Front"- Archers of Loaf. Quite simply the best indie rock single, in my opinion. Band curiously did not do anything else approaching this. Funny, catchy, short, bouncy, genious.

I must have read this when it was originally posted, fallen out of my chair and hit my head on the floor. That's the only reason I can think of for failing to rip this critique to shreds!

Not only is "Web in Front" one of the least appealing things AoL ever did, but the entire first album is such hogwash compared to the remainder of their catalog.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 5 August 2004 01:13 (nineteen years ago) link

I love "Web in Front" and hate almost everything else by them.

bit surprised to see this on an indie rock comp

gem (trisk), Thursday, 5 August 2004 02:46 (nineteen years ago) link

"Diary" by Saturday Looks Good To Me is the only indie rock song released in 2004 that I have significantly enjoyed, so I'd include that song, it is nice.
