AN EVEN SADDER QUESTION: How many CDs/LPs/singles do you own?

After seeing Tom's question about CD organization, I found myself curious about how much music people actually own. I hesitate to ask because there seems something boorish about the question, like asking how much someone weighs or something. But what the hell, we may as well descend all the way into music geekdom. So what are the rough totals? Approximately how many CDS, vinyl records, singles and MP3s (if you like) do you have?

I really only own CDs. And, somewhere between 1000 and 1100. I am actually a big enough dork that I could tell you exactly (I have a database), but I'm not a big enough dork that I can get at that information from this computer lab. Ha.

Oh, Lord knows. I used to have about 1200 albums on one format or another, but a lot of those were on tape. I've probably now got somewhere around 700 CD albums, 300 CD singles, a couple of hundred 12"s, ditto LPs, 6-700 7" singles, and I have no idea how many albums on tape, either copied or original - anything between 500 and 1000. About half of all categories except the tapes I consider 'core' and actually move around with me. I've got about 1000 MP3s which arent on anything else, too. (I have exactly 1000 on my hard drive of course, but some of those are encoded.)

Don't know and don't care anymore. Maybe I got sick and tired of people seeing my collection going "jeeez, how many records do you have?" When i was a kid i thought of starting a database thingy, but I don't bother, too much work and I have them memorized anyway.

I have about 600 Cds, all arranged alphabetically, and 400 vinyl albums also alphabeticised. No database or anything. What do you think I am, anal or something?

David Sim, Tuesday, 23 January 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I can out-dork Josh any day of the week. 848, precisely (it's not a database, just a great big list).

The vinyl's not so easy - some of it's still on Merseyside, for a start. About 500 LPs/singles probably. Another 200 cassettes and perhaps 80 MDs (barely 2% of these are pre-recorded, of course). I have four sixty-second long MP3 files on my hard-drive.

Add in Pam's stuff and I think we're approaching 3000 in all formats and all locations (in Pam's case that includes a DC basement).

The only one we ever really listen to is "Bing - Rare Style".

I had been suffering under the delusion that I only owned around 500 CDs for several years now. This Christmas, my wife bought me a CD rack which was advertised to hold 750. I filled the entire thing and still had a good 200 left over. (Oops.)

I still don't have an exact count, but it's close to 1000.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 23 January 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

For me, somewhere between 800 and 900 CDs, 250 to 300 LPs, and around 120 or so 7-inch singles. Then maybe another 100 tapes or so, but who really counts those.

Mark Richardson, Tuesday, 23 January 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I count tapes. I've got three, which is still triple my amount of working tape decks. I've got like a thousand CDs, and have probably sold as many.

Otis Wheeler, Tuesday, 23 January 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Over 500, under one thousand (by my best estimates). It's been a couple years since I was actually sad enough to count them, it would dishearten me too much to actually count again.

Nicole, Tuesday, 23 January 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

so does this mean i'm actually deeply cool for only having about 80 to a hundred albums total [20 or so lps, a few tapes, rest on cd] and maybe 50 singles? but then again i'm only 15, so have hardly had as long as the rest of you to build up a collection, let alone the cash.

jessica owens, Tuesday, 23 January 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I last counted my LPs about a year ago and I had like 900, but I've bought two or three since then. I own about 30 CDs (though I don't really have a CD player), an untold hundreds of cassettes, about 200 vinyl singles, about 300 mp3s, and five 8-tracks, though my 8-track player is broken. All of this stuff is sitting on closet shelves or on my floor, so I can never find anything I'm looking for.

Do you guys steal CDs? I have 189 according to my dorkybase, and I thought that was a lot. I do tend to sell old stuff I don't listen to anymore, but that's just so I have the money to buy all the new stuff I want! How do you guys do it???

larmey, Tuesday, 23 January 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Foolishly, is how I do it. Plus at the moment there are probably at least 300 things that I should probably sell because I haven't listened to them in a year or two. Or three. Or four. Mostly it's the foolishness that does it, though.

Josh, Tuesday, 23 January 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

The vast majority of my collection was accumulated during college, where I spent all of my spare money on CDs, and the first couple of years that I was working, where instead of saving money I decided to attempt to buy every piece of music I'd heard that I liked.

Several years later, I have to admit that saving might have been the wiser choice, but lately I've been going through older stuff and giving it spins. Don't regret it at all.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 24 January 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

At this point, I must have something approaching 4500 CDs. And some vinyl and tapes and things. Add in all my books and videotapes and the like and thank god I rent a house and not an apartment.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 24 January 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Well, its gotta be about (only!) 200 LPs, 400 CDs, 150 Tapes, 50 Minidiscs, 800 Singles (7s, 12s, CDs) and about 200 hours of MP3.

I think that's pretty excessive really, but I couldn't bear to chuck any of them out - I've tried, but I just give them one last listen and think - Oh, I quite-liked the transition between the bridge and chorus in that Space B-side. As a result I never chuck out anything, no matter how embarassing. Except the first Radiohead EP which I chucked a few years ago, and then found out was worth about a hundred quid...

And I'd bought it for 10p in a bargin bin...

And there where 10 more in the same bin at the time.

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 25 January 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I've got somewhere in the region of 2500 and 3000 having given up trying to keep count after 1000 or so some years ago. Frankly it's a frightening statistic and has already resulted in having to move property to accomodate the growing musical mass!

Guy Flower, Friday, 2 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

well about 700 cd and lps (divided 50/50) and about 150 7"/12"/Cds and about 2500 mp3s.

Jens, Monday, 5 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Before discovering Minidisc's I had no job or cash therefore my collection is small and needs no database. 200 cd's, 20 tapes, 100 MD, and around 40 mp3's on HD at a time. of course if i had a job that was more than 6$ an hour i could afford more but oh well...long time left to buy music.

Kevin Enas, Monday, 19 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

five months pass...
24 CDs. 8 to 10 tapes. About 20 burned CDs, but they don't really count. My excuse: I'm 15, I have no job and very little money, and what I do get from babysitting is divided mostly between books and saving for [insert name here]. [Insert name here], last a new CD player, is currently a guitar, and I should have enough to pay for it right around when my current CD player breaks.
