OK i thought i might start of this list by mentioning the British Sea Power Album....cool intelligent and often crazy sounds.

Dizzee Rascal :) (its pretty cool, a bit too basic beats for me sometimes, but i luv u is sooo catchy)

DJ Format - cooool n funky.

IMA Robot i've just heard and thought we're OK...too over produced though.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Wow! what amazing drums n guitar playing!

M83 - sends shivers down my spine! the warmest and most enveloping sounds i've ever heard on an electronica record

Any more suggestions anyone?... i'm curious to hear some new bands this year...

Mr Monket (apn99), Thursday, 11 September 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't like it at first, but now I'm having a lot of fun with Junior Senior.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 11 September 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

it occurs to me now that almost none of the albums i've owned/enjoyed this year have been debuts, and even those that were were ones I'd heard bits of and anticipated before this year (Kenna, Freeway, etc.). hm.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 11 September 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Building Castles Out of Matchsticks is a debut. Readymades. Mars Volta.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 11 September 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

oh crap how could I have forgotten...SOFT CANYON!!!

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 11 September 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

What's the Soft Canyon like? The local record store got a couple of copies in as part of that Exclaim! co-op thing with Sonic Unyon and it kind of piqued my interest.
It had purple in the cover and I like purple.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Thursday, 11 September 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The Fallacy album is really great, and though he's appeared on various albums as a guest in the past, this is his debut album.

By the way, M83's first album is self titled and came out in 2001, I believe, so the new one is their second album.

Jonathan (Jonathan), Thursday, 11 September 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Re Soft Canyon:

Very West Coast Psych-oriented, like the Sadies minus country. Led by the former front-dude of Tricky Woo, Andrew Dickson. Sort of follows the progression of TW (with each album their hair got longer, both literally and figuratively).
If you like Acid Mothers Temple, early Pink Floyd, Van Dyke Parks and Royal Trux, you'll probably like this.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 11 September 2003 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Awright. I liked the Tricky Woo and I sure do like that druggy music. Makes me feel all counter culture. Thanks. I might pick that up today.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Thursday, 11 September 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

dang! now I have "Kaleidoscope Mountain" stuck in my head. Actually, that's a good thing.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 11 September 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

What is IMA Robot actually like, anyway?

The Bad Plus was just barely released in this year but it's still my favorite. The show last night was so far off the hook, I need a map to find it again.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 11 September 2003 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Jet. Best album of the year so far.

David S McFarlane, Thursday, 11 September 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmmm. I'd say Fever to Tell by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs pretty much wins it for me.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 11 September 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, you would say that.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 11 September 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I really, really like the Postal Service album. It's having a bloody street brawl in my head right now with the new Spiritualized for the title of album of the year thus far. Until Outkast comes along in 13 days and just steamrolls both of them; I'll be way disappointed if this doesn't happen.

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Thursday, 11 September 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

The Exploding Hearts, sadly.

BrianB, Thursday, 11 September 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Postal Service has really won me over.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 11 September 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Zongamin his debut? If so it's pretty cool.

Nick H, Thursday, 11 September 2003 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

M83 - sends shivers down my spine! the warmest and most enveloping sounds i've ever heard on an electronica record

I like this too, but I remember hearing they have another record from last year as well...?

Re Soft Canyon:

Hmm. Saw them with label mates The Unicorns and they got upstaged bigtime.

gazuga (gazuga), Thursday, 11 September 2003 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, you would say that.
-- Horace Mann

Not only would I, but I did,

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 11 September 2003 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Fever To Tell's better than anybody's album this year. So far. That I've heard.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 11 September 2003 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

pedro's debut is sublime.
kid acne's is great fun.
parsley sound is going to be rotated a lot more than i would have believed.
and i'm sure there are others ..
m.e

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 11 September 2003 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

my fav debut this year is probably bonecrusher

trife (simon_tr), Thursday, 11 September 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

a.r.e. weapons
electric six
triple threat
grooveski
junior senior
party of one
exploding hearts
fm knives
lyrics born

(not necessarily in that order)

chuck, Thursday, 11 September 2003 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

and i'm probably forgetting a few -- rapider than horsepower and black lips, which may (or may not) be as good as some of the ones above, come to mind. i'm finally gonna hear dizzee rascal next week.

chuck, Thursday, 11 September 2003 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, I forgot about the Electric Six record.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 11 September 2003 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Girls Aloud

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 11 September 2003 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

also The Darkness obv.

What on earth happened to the Vitalic album?

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 11 September 2003 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I recently saw Vitalic live, and he certainly has enough new material for an album.

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 11 September 2003 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Still in the pipeline I think. I hope he does make one.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 11 September 2003 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Girls Aloud, Dizzee Rascal, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, tATu, The Kills.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 11 September 2003 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, i love junior senior, girls aloud, dizzee rascal, and plot to blow up the eiffel tower, but exploding hearts is probably the best debut i've heard in the past 5 or so years, maybe more.

colin mcelligatt, Thursday, 11 September 2003 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Agreed on Dizzee and Girls Aloud. A lot of the debuts I'm looking forward to are only alleged 03 releases at the moment - Superpitcher, M Mayer and Vybz Kartel come to mind.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 11 September 2003 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Jibberish - Harco Pront. Dutch lo-fi electronic/funk/blues singer/producer. Don't miss out, I'm not kidding.

JoB (JoB), Thursday, 11 September 2003 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

i dunno if its my favourite but yeah, that harco pront record is pretty great.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 12 September 2003 00:04 (twenty-two years ago)

akrobatik
los lonely boys
the finishing school
scrapomatic
ashfelt
miary lepiera

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 12 September 2003 00:08 (twenty-two years ago)

TV On The Radio - Young Liars

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 12 September 2003 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Add Killer Mike to the fray. The first two singles were ace, but "U Know I Love U" is fucking love-hate inner-struggle brilliance.

I'll second most of Eddy's list, though calling Guitar Romantic a "debut album", while technically accurate, depresses the hell out of me.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Friday, 12 September 2003 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

sk/um, radio dept., pas/cal mini-lp.

postal service is the worst debut. ben gibbard makes my skin crawl.

keith (keithmcl), Friday, 12 September 2003 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

oh and luma lane and misty dixon both made great debut records.

keith (keithmcl), Friday, 12 September 2003 00:30 (twenty-two years ago)

big three from brazil:
cibelle, tribalistas,
celso fonseca!

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 12 September 2003 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

postal blue is from brazil and should be releasing their debut soon.

keith (keithmcl), Friday, 12 September 2003 01:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Metric - "Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?"

fun stuff

ham on rye (ham on rye), Friday, 12 September 2003 01:51 (twenty-two years ago)

The Kills, tATu, Bonecrusher.

I'm dying to hear Dizzee Rascal.

And is David Banner's record a solo debut? If so, I like that one, too.

Chris O., Friday, 12 September 2003 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll chime in with the chorus of Yeah Yeah Yeahs praise.

Also, Jet's Get Born and the Exploding Hearts' Guitar Romantic (r.i.p.) are fine slabs of aluminum.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Friday, 12 September 2003 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)

misty dixon, kills, kanda, cannonball jane, radio dept are all wonderful.

are you people serious about Jet? i mean *really* serious? or are you just winding me up?

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 12 September 2003 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)

The Natural History's Beat Beat Heartbeat. Does The Decemberists' Castaways and Cutouts (originally released 2002, re-released 2003) count?

Nick Mirov (nick), Friday, 12 September 2003 03:05 (twenty-two years ago)

The Jet fascination might only be temporary, as I've only had it for a week...but it does have the makings of a keeper.

Also, can't believe I forgot Junior Senior. It makes me shake my coconuts.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Friday, 12 September 2003 03:24 (twenty-two years ago)

ATTN mall shoppers: the yeah yeah yeahs fucking suck.

reo fordecor, Friday, 12 September 2003 04:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, in that case, I'm removing them from my list.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Friday, 12 September 2003 04:12 (twenty-two years ago)

whatever, it's just a phase, you'll grow out of it.

reo fordecor, Friday, 12 September 2003 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)
