Go to the music section of www.thestrokes.com and you can get the mp3 of their new single, 12:51.

What's the consensus?

I liked it, but was a little underwhelmed, there wasn't that much going on except for that guitar/synth melody....

it's not synth, it's a guitar...

I love how the Strokes are able to continually harness so much hype about themselves using diluted implementations of previous' artists' tricks. It's a great fucking analogy.

Who can forget "PAUL IS DEAD" from the Beatles' "Strawberry Fields Forever"?

Who can forget the screaming of a woman being murdered during the recording of Ohio Players' "Love Rollercoaster"?

And last but not least, who can forget the urgent and key "IS IT A SYNTHESIZER OR IS IT A GUITAR" dilemma of the Strokes' "12:51"?

is this the same version that was posted earlier? that seemed so muted and lifeless, like they were playing with a metronome or something. and it was utterly forgettable too.

It's not especially exciting......or, ummmmm....well, good, really.

the other version was live and seemed a little more...um...lively.

Not very good, is it? Quelle surprise.

ts: what is more boring: the new strokes single or the comments on ilm about the new strokes single? you kids need to go outside and get some fresh air and sunshine!

minna (minna), Friday, 12 September 2003 07:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not too impressed. What worries me more is, this is the best they could come up with after two years? A young, supposedly hungry band like this should be pumping out way more music.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Friday, 12 September 2003 11:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Seems to be missing a chorus, doesn't it?

southern lights (southern lights), Friday, 12 September 2003 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Sounds like they've been listening to a lot of Stereo Total. Kinda...cute-sounding.

Jazzbo OTM!!!!

I admit, "Hey Ya!" sounds a hell of a lot better on KROQ.

But I still love the Strokes song. I love the Strokes!

Maybe it's one of those songs that grows on you after you hear it 81 times... those are getting popular now - 'subtle' songs that don't seem very good, but radio plays them so much you accept them into your life.

I still sing that "Bum-bum-bumblebee, Bumblebee tuna!" jingle, though I haven't heard it in years. But it was written by Manilow.
