Hey guys. Which one should I subscrive to? I can only afford one.
Bands I like are Hot Hot Heat , Postal Service , Smog , Ladytron , Zongamin , Flaming Lips , Death Cab For Cutie , Bright Eyes , Les Savy Fav, Idlewild , Kings Of leon , Spiritualized.

Which mag would be best for me?

Vicky Bevarage, Thursday, 11 September 2003 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

probably The Big Takeover or Skyscraper if those are your fave bands. CTCL is close, though more expensive if you're in the US (I'm guessing you are from your AOL account) and The Wire doesn't cover any of those bands, though in some ways it's the best of them as a magazine.

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 11 September 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I do like other bands, thatw as all i could think of. Also like Radiohead, Bjork , Brendan Benson , Mogwai , G!YBE.

Also Taking Sides Careless Talk Costs Lives Vs The Big Takeover Vs Skyscraper Vs The Wire
what is the best between them anyway?

Yes im In the US.
Feel free to recommend me other good Mags. I mentioned The Wire as i've heard it covers bands noone else does and i'd like to hear new stuff.

Vicky Bevarage, Thursday, 11 September 2003 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

the wire will prob not be so up your alley. however, it does employ some stunning writers (and some real rotters, too) and puts forward some great ideas. carless talk is a lovely mag and i'm not saying that coz i still owe them a column...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 11 September 2003 21:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I like a lot of Careless Talk, theres a good percentage of very enlightening articles in there and that "Metal: A Column" thing i like a lot. and I think ive seen a few ILMers writing for it too...

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Thursday, 11 September 2003 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, Ned writes for it and one or two others. Everett True has been known to post here as well.

even the bands you named in your second post (except Radiohead) aren't covered by The Wire much, though, V

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 11 September 2003 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

but G!YBE and, though not a 'band', Björk are covered alright

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 11 September 2003 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

What is Skyscraper? I've never heard of it before. What does it cover?

I do indeed scribble for it. Sent off my latest column just yesterday, for the issue 1 (counting down from issue 12).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 12 September 2003 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Er, it being CTCL, referring to Matos' comment above. (Oh BTW, M., did that Faith and Disease piece arrive?)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 12 September 2003 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Issue 2 of CTCL out? I was up visiting my brother in Glasgow last weekend and when in the city centre i went to a few shops before i got the train home. None of the shops there said CTCL was out. Noone had had it in stock. Fopp says they dont even sell it anymore as noone bought it. Yet the other shops (avalanche, Monorail,Borders) said that they never get enough copies and they fly off the shelves when they do come in.
So is it out?

Ramon Duul, Friday, 12 September 2003 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

i seen it today in borders buchanan street - it wasnt with the music mags though it was next to the face, id, sleazenation etc. - one aisle back

jed (jed_e_3), Friday, 12 September 2003 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn I didnt check there and im back home now. I'll get my brother to get it.
Thanks jed.

Ramon Duul, Friday, 12 September 2003 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

well it's in completely the wrong place - i thought of mentioning it to the staff but of course i didn't.

jed (jed_e_3), Friday, 12 September 2003 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Big Take Over, of course, because Bad Brains kick ass.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Friday, 12 September 2003 03:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Careless Talk Costs Lives - If you like whiny obscure indie rock nomarks.

Timmy Dope, Friday, 12 September 2003 07:04 (twenty-two years ago)

steve gullick is godlike.
(a vote for ctcl)

joni, Friday, 12 September 2003 08:11 (twenty-two years ago)

(people mention writing all the time round here, but never mention the photographers....gullick is a huge part of ctcls appeal for me)

joni, Friday, 12 September 2003 08:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Bevarage is an outstanding surname.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 12 September 2003 08:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I feel lucky really. I used to have a friend called Peta Beaver.(Seriously)she changed her surname funnily enough.
Still cant decide which magazine to subscribe to. They all sound appealing in different ways but I can only afford one.

Vicky Bevarage, Friday, 12 September 2003 10:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm... I still think CTCL treats too much non-indie as the poor cousin for my tastes. I'll go with The Wire, despite all my past nit-picking.

The Wire Vs Careless Talk Cost Lives Vs NME

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 12 September 2003 11:16 (twenty-two years ago)

CTCL is closing with #1. There will be 2 new magazines under our umbrella, due early next year. Details to follow soon.

stevie (stevie), Friday, 12 September 2003 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Save your money - http://www.stylusmagazine.com is much better, and free to boot (as long as you've got the internet!).

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 12 September 2003 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Based on your list above Big Takeover is more for you. Though I've had a hell of a time finding CTCL in Canada. Everett True posts from time to time and we did have a guest apperance on a couple threads from Jack Rabid. Hell, been on the [email protected] mailing list for several years.

Big Take Over, of course, because Bad Brains kick ass.

As does Chino [The Nils].

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 12 September 2003 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

The photos in CTCL are superb, inspirational even.

Pointless subscribing though: it's finishing soon and once you've seen a few issues the text is pretty much interchangable, just with different band names.

That's exagerrating a bit, and some of the colums (the metal one ) are great.

http://www.nme.com/news/106158.htm The new NME says it offers the best photography.

NEXT WEEK - YOUR NEW LOOK NME!

NME will unleash its brand new look next week (September 17) giving you not only the most hard-hitting news and reviews, in-depth features and sharpest photography in the world, but also an exclusive CD hand-picked by THE STROKES.

The new-look NME has undergone a complete redesign following months of extensive research, development and creative work which will all be unveiled in the next issue. The cover CD will feature tracks chosen by the kings of New York cool, The Strokes, and a rare demo version of 'Is This It'.

NME editor Conor McNicholas said: "Having just celebrated regaining the top spot as the UK’s best-selling music weekly, and the best festival coverage ever this redesign is another exciting move in the history of this world famous brand. It has taken six months of intensive research and hard graft."

He added: "No change has been introduced lightly, with every innovation focused squarely on our readers' demanding list of wants and needs. The finished result is something that the whole team is incredibly proud of and our readers will be pleased to see."

Amongst the completely new innovations that will be ingrained into the magazine every week will be your one-stop guide to everything you need in your life - 'The Agenda'. Every essential album, single, gig, film, and TV and radio event will be listed, giving you the chance to lap up as much rock 'n roll high (and low) culture as humanely possible.

Conor said: "We've made some bold moves, and we've added some unique new twists to the title. However, our sole aim has been to ensure that the NME not only maintains its position as being the first stop for music news and reviews, but also continues to deliver as the title closest to the cutting-edge of music culture."

The tracklisting for the CD will be:

Kings of Leon - 'Spiral Staircase'
Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers - 'Chinese Rocks'
The Ramones - 'Teenage Lobotomy'
New York Dolls - 'Trash'
The Modern Lovers - 'Pablo Picasso'
The Velvet Underground - 'I'm Waiting For The Man'
Bob Marley & The Wailers - 'Trenchtown Rock'
Peter Tosh - 'Arise Black'
Iggy Pop with Ric Ocasek - 'Old Mule Skinner'
Blondie - 'One Way Or Another'
Duran Duran - 'Rio'
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - 'Miles Away'
Patsy Cline - 'Walkin' After Midnight'
The Strokes - 'Is This It' (Demo Recorded at JP's House)
Jet - 'Get Me Outta Here'
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - 'In Like The Rose'
