rockist scientist to thread!

zebedee (zebedee), Friday, 12 September 2003 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

1. Saleh Abdel Gafor: Ishlonak Einy. (Iraq)

(I think I might go back to my old name, since everyone is attached to it.)

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 12 September 2003 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

This is going to be harder than I thought, if we (I?) attempt to keep a balance between countries, since I don't know the names of a lot of things, not to mention I know nothing about North Korean music.

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 12 September 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

2. Sixto Llorente "El Indio": Mi Magdalena. (Cuba)

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 12 September 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

whoops!

(actually I liked DeRayMi more)

3. Trio Matamoros: Son De La Loma (cuba)

zebedee (zebedee), Friday, 12 September 2003 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

4. Los Van Van: La Bomba Soy Yo. (Cuba)

Rockist Scientist or whatever, Friday, 12 September 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

This will be easier to work on when I get home.

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 12 September 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

At the party where I got drunk for the first time, I ended up listening to Joy Division off by myelf. Sometimes my threads remind me of that, except the musical content has changed.

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 12 September 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

What a fantastic idea for a thread. Damn! I know nothing.

I downloaded a load of allegedly Iraqi music from the net a few months ago ... sounded like all the other Arab (Egyptian, Lebanese etc.) pop I'd heard. Enjoyable stuff but nothing struck me particularly.

Cuba is kind of easy of course. (By the way, saw Oliver Stone's interview with Castro last night. Amazing movie. How much distribution is it getting in America?)

But I don't think I ever heard music from North Korea and Libya? What's it like?

phil jones (interstar), Friday, 12 September 2003 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

5. Hossein Alizâdeh - Sobhgahi [Iran]

6. Munir Bashir - The Art of the Ud [Iraq]

The Alizâdeh (expansive, almost symphonic work) is outstanding - well both of them are really, but I definitely need to explore more of his recordings.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 12 September 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Flock of Seagulls "I Ran"

dave q, Friday, 12 September 2003 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Cuba rocks! U R ALL GAY!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 12 September 2003 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

7. Mohammad Reza Shajarian/Kayhan Kalhor: Night Silence Desert. (Iran)

8. Farida: Mawal Hijaz (from Mawal & Maqamat Iraqi)

("Mawal Hijaz" isn't really the name of a distinct composition. Mawal is a certain type of vocal performance and Hijaz is a maqam, a type of mode.)

Al Andalous, Friday, 12 September 2003 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

9. Manolin: Te Conozco Mascarita. [copied from someone's handwriting, so I hope this is accurate.]

Al Andalous, Friday, 12 September 2003 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)

10. Hussayn al-Azami : Maqam Iraqi On Mystical Texts And Poetry (Iraq)
11. Sharam Nazeri : Spiritual Songs From Iran (er, Iran)

These tracks are both from the "Hamdulillah Vol 2" compilation of tracks from a Morrocan sacred music festival in 1997 / 1998. I guess the songtitles are more of a description of the music and lyrics than actual titles of pieces, but it's good stuff though. The only North Korean music I know is their national anthem, which for some reason I own on a compilation of 67 national anthems. It's not very good.

udu wudu (udu wudu), Saturday, 13 September 2003 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

You know, I don't actually like very much Cuban music, when you come down to it (so maybe if people want to add some. . . as long as it doesn't add up to 100). (Not much interest in this thread. Maybe the title was offensive.)

Al Andalous (Al Andalous), Saturday, 13 September 2003 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Historical evil axii tangent - ZZ Top "Sheik" mentions Cuba and Mozambique. Since the song came out in 1975 do you think it was a response to "Satellite of Love"?

dave q, Sunday, 14 September 2003 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

does Ofra Haza count?

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 14 September 2003 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

stevem, we're talking the official Axis of Evil here. (Or did she have roots I was not aware of in one of these countries. I thought she had Yemenite roots, actually.)

12. Celia Cruz: Yemaya.

[Songs Cruz recorded in PR/NuYorican style after she left Cuba do not count for this thread.]

Al Andalous, Sunday, 14 September 2003 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Was Devil's Anvil from Iran or Iraq? I know it was someplace in the Middle East, because their sole LP is called 'Hard Rock From the Middle East'. Really good ethnic psych/rock.

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Sunday, 14 September 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Fearless Iranians from Hell, "Blow Up The Embassy" (I think one of them is Iranian, does that count? Also Dick Dale and Tiffany are Lebanese. Well come on, if confusing all Mideast countries are good enough for BushCo then it's good enough for me!)

dave q, Sunday, 14 September 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Do Miami Sound Machine, Expose, Slayer, and every Geto Boys song that refers to 'Scarface' count?

dave q, Sunday, 14 September 2003 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

They played "Turn the Beat Around" on the radio last night! It was awesome.

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 5 June 2004 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I should have more things to add to this soon, but I just wanted to say that there is a lot of incredibly bad Iraqi pop music. I'm listening to an old mix of Kazem el Saher songs.
