Is there any punk. Or is it just having a guitar in the mix? Or what is it? Any truly innovative new bands in this luke warm up- chuck?

bob, Sunday, 14 September 2003 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I like reading that as "Luke, warm up Chuck."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 14 September 2003 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Or is it just having a guitar in the mix?

that's pretty much it

the surface noise (electricsound), Sunday, 14 September 2003 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't forget the strangulated vocals!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 14 September 2003 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

there's also that whole NY thing. and the bands are often too sloppy for the majors. that's punk.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 14 September 2003 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe it comes from "post-punk" ??

Sonny A. (Keiko), Sunday, 14 September 2003 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Strictly speaking, it ain't that disco, either.

Sean (Sean), Sunday, 14 September 2003 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

except for 'beat connection'

the surface noise (electricsound), Sunday, 14 September 2003 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

ilx is so "edgy" lately.

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 14 September 2003 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

WHAT SACRED COW WILL BE TOSSED ON THE GRILL NEXT??

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 14 September 2003 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Haven't they started calling this "dunk" yet?

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 14 September 2003 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Why not equal letter-age for disco and punk, then? "Dink".

Girolamo Savonarola, Sunday, 14 September 2003 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

WHAT SACRED COW WILL BE TOSSED ON THE GRILL NEXT??

We're attacking sacred cows? Or even...um..."sacred cows"?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 15 September 2003 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

has the illegal organ trade on sarcasm glands been particularly good lately?

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 September 2003 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

(and i was mostly referring to the initial question.)

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 September 2003 00:04 (twenty-two years ago)

sarcasm is getting a hell of a lot more difficult to spot these days

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 15 September 2003 00:06 (twenty-two years ago)

(Jess, you would be shocked, shocked at the some of the things said to me sarcastically that I've taken at face-value over the years. Seriously.)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 15 September 2003 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

actually the shocking thing about the question above is that this guy apparently hears more disco in these bands than punk!

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 September 2003 00:11 (twenty-two years ago)

'disco' = 'anything with a beat' (this interpretation has proven unworkable in many respects)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 September 2003 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

That's 'cause these kids today, they don't remember the disco, they don't remember the strings and the glossy sentiment. They just know it had a BEAT.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 15 September 2003 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

these kids today weren't even sperm when REAL DISCO was around

Vic (Vic), Monday, 15 September 2003 00:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Disco is the new rockist

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 15 September 2003 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah all of this dance shit today is just commercial crapola

Vic (Vic), Monday, 15 September 2003 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

disco/punk rebirth threads post summer 2002 should be locked
vaguely chic guitar variations via gang of 4
stop lurking @ ILM would never have crossed my mind some time ago, I just asked myself how did it happened?
ça doit dépendre de l'histoire, des personages, des situation, si je me sens électrisé par tout ça. oooh là là maybe I really hate music!

Sébastien Chikara (Sébastien Chikara), Monday, 15 September 2003 03:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I was just talking to a friend about this stuff, and in particular the hype party line that has Pitchfork types talking about the Rapture like they're going to save us from all the problems with 'old' indie, and he said the best thing that I have to share: "i like it. it doesnt make me regret the 90's though!"

Al (sitcom), Monday, 15 September 2003 03:47 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, the use of the cymbal in the drum pattern is very disco-y. i don't really see the punk connection though. is it because most of those bands rip off PiL and someone in Pil used to be engaged in punk rock? is this a trick question?

lolita corpus (lolitacorpus), Monday, 15 September 2003 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

That "Sk8er Boi" synth-pop mix seemed more like "disco-punk", and I'd certainly like to hear more stuff like that; or alternately, these bands could do more latter day Gang of Four like "I Love a Man in a Uniform" because Gang of Four were pretty good, but an entire movement with like 10 notable bands aping 'Entertainment' is getting boring at this point.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 15 September 2003 07:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i would site blackeyes & the chromatics, as being more on the innovative tip in this so called arty dance punk upchuk.

kerry getz (kgetz), Monday, 15 September 2003 07:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Most of the lo-fi dance stuff sounds punk in virtue of its do-it-yourself production aesthetic: 'Anyone can write, produce and release a record, you don't need too much money, just a few ideas and some attitude, some bottle'.

Obviously, this is a great thing. It is what made all movements in muisc vital and active. I mean, you could call it punk, but I prefer to call it the most basic kind of inspiration.

Disco Punk Sucks

mei (mei), Monday, 15 September 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Disco Punk's Not Dead!

David Merryweather (DavidM), Monday, 15 September 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Too Disco Punk To Fuck!

mei (mei), Monday, 15 September 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Or should that be:

2 Disko 2 Fuk!

mei (mei), Monday, 15 September 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

jess's 5th comment is pretty much on the money.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 15 September 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Off topic, slightly, but I just watched the Contortions covering Chic's "Good Times" in 1979 at the Walker Art Center, and it's basically the Rapture and then some. The movie, The M-80 Project, was lost until recently, and you should see it if you're in Minneapolis on October 1:
