"On the Mouth" should be heard by all
Anyone else have favorite Superchunk album?

There new b-side compilation is real good also.

Superchunk does not get there due respect

Sadly, I tend to think the opposite situation applies.

YOU DIE NOW, NED RAGGETT!

S. Chunk (SeanC), Monday, 15 September 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I am absolutely sympathetic to your cause, but I'm afraid you're [sp] spelling will make us an easy target. ahh, fuck it.

yeah, Cup Of Sand is pretty good. spotty, but that's to be expected, and I'm really just happy to have some of my favorite single/comp. tracks (The Majestic, Does Your Hometown Care, The Length of Las Ramblas, etc.) in one convenient collection. but then, my estimation of their absolute peak, Here's Where The Strings Come In, is a bit later than what the fan/crit concensus seems to be, and I like the recent albums moe than most, especially Come Pick Me Up.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 15 September 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Tossing Seeds was a staple of my youth. The only track I've ripped from it and listen to these days is "Seed Toss". Best ever version of "Brand New Love" by anyone ever on it too. Damn, I'm going to rip that one too if the CD still works.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Monday, 15 September 2003 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

'on the mouth' is maybe the worst album i own.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Monday, 15 September 2003 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i like on the mouth, that's when the strings come in, and esp. Incidental Music, which I like better than tossing seeds.

If on the mouth is the worst album you own, you're doing pretty well for yourself.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 15 September 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Superchunk has done some great stuff. But, I think they are more important for what Mac contributed to music - the label and such. I like No Pocky For Kitty and Portastatic's Slow Note For A Sinking Ship. On The Mouth was cool - I thought - cool sound. He played drums on the first Seam album too. And I guess he signed Polvo. Big ups for that. Word.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Monday, 15 September 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm with you, Al... I think Here's to Shutting Up has some awesome tracks on it, too, like "Phone Sex" and "Florida's On Fire." And they were really terrific live when I saw them a year or so ago (first tour I saw since Foolish-era) and they closed with "Born to Run."

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Monday, 15 September 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

_Come Pick Me Up_ just gets better with age. Really.

Douglas (Douglas), Monday, 15 September 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll second (or third?) "Here's Where the Strings Come In."

I feel like I ought to own "No Pocky for Kitty," but every time I consider getting it, I think, "How many more Superchunk CDs do I really need?"

mte, Monday, 15 September 2003 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I rarely listen to anything after "Here's where the strings...
Those albums are ok IMO, but nothing worth listening to when they so much better stuff.

yaeger, Monday, 15 September 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

The *song* "On the Mouth" (the one on Incidental Music 1991-95) is so good it makes my bones rattle. Holy shit, really.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 15 September 2003 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I've only heard two songs but they're like the best indie rock songs ever. Is there a record that includes both "Slack Motherfucker" and "Cadmium"?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 15 September 2003 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

We've done this before, and if I remember correctly, "Foolish" (my favorite) was vastly unpopular.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 15 September 2003 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Is there a record that includes both "Slack Motherfucker" and "Cadmium"?

No; Cadmium is on the "Hit Self Destruct" ep and the "Incidental Music" comp; Slack Mutherfucker is on their first eponymous album (probably their weakest) and the "Tossing Seeds" comp.

On the Mouth is my favorite, though I like all of their albums well enough. The first and "Come Pick Me Up" are my least favorite. I've seen them live twice, and they were great both times.

Jeremy (Jeremy), Monday, 15 September 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Jon Wurster is a funny, funny man.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 15 September 2003 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Jeanne -- you're OTM about "OTM." Could never figure out how that ended up a b-side. "I've never even been to your new house / but I bet I know exactly what it's like..." Sooo good.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Monday, 15 September 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

raggett is wrong -- his head must still be stuck in the early 90's. their flavor has been disposed of long a go for the Next Newest Neat Thing.

as for the band itself, what more can you ask for? they have evolved, tried new things while still producing good work. far more than most bands are capable of as they farm the same land until its barren.

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 15 September 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Superchunk's one of my favorite bands, but I think they get more than enough respect. And Anthony totally OTM about Jon Wurster.

JS Williams (js williams), Monday, 15 September 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

raggett is wrong -- his head must still be stuck in the early 90's.

Not this again! And I think you were the same person who said this LAST time. I find them a fundamentally boring band who haven't done anything to interest me then or now. If that makes you cry, then CRY.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 September 2003 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

the world of raggett is a vampire.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 15 September 2003 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Foolish is a great record. I like to think of the chunk as being more of a singles band, possibly why Incidental Music is my fave release of theirs

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 15 September 2003 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Set to dra-a-ain.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 September 2003 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Great band. Here's Where The Strings Come In is my fave.

Mark M, Tuesday, 16 September 2003 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm gonna cast another vote for "Here's where the Strings Come In". A great, great album.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 04:06 (twenty-two years ago)

you know that jonny wurster kid, the kid that delivers papers
in the neighborhood? he's a foreign kid. some of the neighbors
say he smokes crack, but I don't believe it.

will g. (will g.), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i love superchunk, the early stuff, the latest stuff... a lot of folx get free reign to write them off due to indie guilt issues but their songs. the first song on their latest record ("late century dream" he remembers) took me about 9 months to love. "rainy streets" is as good as anything they've done.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

it twasnt me, ned.

and my point isnt about taste, just about the level of hype and talk about superchunk, comparing the beginning to the last few years. the spotlight of "Yeah, Superchunk!" hasn't been on for quite a few years.

jack cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I just remembered my favorite Superchunk song...but i don't know the name of it (it was on a mixtape somebody gave me)...

It went: "They're chargin' admission now/For a lock of hair/And your baby teeth"

the chord changes in the chorus were more or less identical to baba o reilly.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

That's "Song for Marion Brown" off Indoor Living.

Jeremy (Jeremy), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to love Superchunk, but now I don't. Did I grow out of them or did they just get boring?

A little from column "a," and a little from column "b."

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Thursday, 18 September 2003 02:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I love what I know of Superchunk, which isnt much - I have On The Mouth, and I loved Cadmium and Slack Mofo. Saw them live in Melb in 92 and loved the way the bassplayer hopped up and down all gig. Cute as fuck. They're fun!

You hate fun, Ned ;P

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 18 September 2003 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

(that was a joke pls dont hit me *cries*)

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 18 September 2003 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

five months pass...
ned, do you know that one of the smashing pumpkids first gigs was opening for superchunk?

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 1 March 2004 06:47 (twenty-two years ago)

One of the lyrics of Mac's pre-Superchunk band Wwax's "Pumpkin" was "Smashing Pumpkins"...

*waiting for heads to explode*

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 1 March 2004 06:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Then again, Guns N' Roses first gig under that name was opening for the Fastbacks (via the Duff McKagen/Fartz/Seattle rock connection), which obviously means that

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 1 March 2004 06:54 (twenty-two years ago)

ned, do you know that one of the smashing pumpkids first gigs was opening for superchunk?

They also opened for the Poster Children, which given the Poster Kids' sound at the time is a fact that some conspiracy theorists, not unreasonably, equate in reverse to the U2/Comsat Angels tour in 1981 wherein Mr. Edge apparently learned some ideas.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 1 March 2004 06:55 (twenty-two years ago)

thirteen years pass...

I guess not here? WTBA is pretty great imo. Not the highlight song, but Merritt and Superchunk is cool, and I could hear the tone on title track all day with satisfaction.

Global Arming's Terrifying Old Math$ (Hunt3r), Tuesday, 27 February 2018 05:01 (eight years ago)

my favorite band

mookieproof, Tuesday, 27 February 2018 05:18 (eight years ago)

yeah truly one of the great American rock bands

new album is really inspiring to me

It's not delivery, it's Adorno! (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 27 February 2018 13:41 (eight years ago)

Im tryna figure out if the chorus to “Break the Glass” is pitch shifted or ? It’s so chipmunky and intoxicating to me i want to not love it but i do.

Global Arming's Terrifying Old Math$ (Hunt3r), Tuesday, 27 February 2018 15:54 (eight years ago)

saw them last night, mostly new material, to the point where they crammed a bunch of hits into a medley near the end. a sea of grey and bald heads bouncing up and down shouting "SLACK MOTHERFUCKER!"

Haribo Hancock (sic), Wednesday, 28 February 2018 20:02 (eight years ago)

I guess not here? WTBA is pretty great imo. Not the highlight song, but Merritt and Superchunk is cool, and I could hear the tone on title track all day with satisfaction.

― Global Arming's Terrifying Old Math$ (Hunt3r),

There's another thread where most of us said we love this one too

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 28 February 2018 20:08 (eight years ago)

I love the pivot in "Reagan Youth."

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 28 February 2018 20:09 (eight years ago)

I love when like the title track when they do the chorus, then Wurster picks it up on later repetitions with the double-time gallop, such a great move

bridge on "Erasure" is so great

Hate so graceless and so cavalier
We don't just disappear
Shifting shapes you're just an auctioneer
But we're still here

OK it's time I gave due respect to Superchunk. I've been a fan for 22 years and I've never seen them, just bought a ticket to the London gig in May.

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 28 February 2018 21:19 (eight years ago)

Saw them live in the late 90s, fantastic live band. Never loved their studio work, could do with a proper anthology of it all though.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Wednesday, 28 February 2018 21:27 (eight years ago)

I say I've been a fan for 22 years but tbh I haven't listened to much of their music post-1995 lol. Some fan. But No Pocky For Kitty, Tossing Seeds, the 100,000 Fireflies cover and others hold a special place in my heart.

So is the new one a good place to start catching up? I assume "Reagan Youth" isn't a cover?

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 28 February 2018 21:37 (eight years ago)

are you getting old if "Come Pick Me Up" still feels like the new Superchunk album?

rip van wanko, Wednesday, 28 February 2018 21:38 (eight years ago)

a proper anthology of it all though

i could do this sometime

mookieproof, Thursday, 1 March 2018 02:04 (eight years ago)

Tossing Seeds is punk as fuck

brimstead, Thursday, 1 March 2018 02:19 (eight years ago)

I want to shout SLACK MOTHERFUCKER amongst a sea of bald men

brimstead, Thursday, 1 March 2018 02:21 (eight years ago)

i could do this sometime

Yes! And post the tracklisting/playlist.

I adore Mac's vocals on the 6ths "Dream Hat".

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 1 March 2018 04:22 (eight years ago)

two months pass...

Seeing them tonight, and on the way to work thought of this hilarious joke I have to share with you all:

What communication tool do Superchunk use to keep in touch?

Slack, Motherfucker!

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 29 May 2018 09:05 (eight years ago)

That's genuinely funny, and better than a similarly themed joke I've made ("What social network do emo-punks use?" "Lync-edIn!")

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 16:24 (eight years ago)
