For the RH, i don't know: for me, it's just a best of. I mean, it's just some tracks, put in a certain order. I don't feel a real cohesion. There are great tracks (2+2=5, There There, A Wolf at the door) but some many really bad!!

― Nick Mirov (nick), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)
i had really low expectations for Radiohead and they really surprisingly pleased; the album sounds like a consolidation of their experimental tendencies and old melodic skills (listen to that punch up wedding song again) since they're actually making SONGS again, not dry pretentious unoriginal soundscapes like the title rack to Kid A which sounded quite foolish then and seem laughable now (why was that art-rock humdrum referred to as a gigantic statement on "isolation," etc ?) I still don't really care about Thom's dead-mongoose-wailing voice when he overextends himself onthe ballads, but the sonics held my attention this time around and I liked about 8 or 9 of the songs, so I was impressed
i guess after all the hype my major let-down was um, the "No No Nos" (ha ha ha, sorry) - if I read one more article comparing that extremely annoying pigfaced ho to Polly Jean with the words "rock goddess" mentioned, I will scream. I only liked 2 songs on it, and it was all because of the geetar work...there's just no new thoughts there, it's as if you're seeing an episode of some VH1 reality show about what an "edgy" new york underground band with an "edgy" female singer whose last name is one mysterious letter and who SINGS ABOUT SEX OH MY GAWD WOW!! is supposed to be like...actually the show would be better
i didn't even know there was going to be a liz record until it happened, and then it was just very much fun reading all the insane reviews, if you could stand back detached from it all (and resisted listening to the record, as i did), it just seems like so much fuss over hardly anything. as if some people aren't allowed to release dud albums without it being The End of and Full Betrayal to the Indie-Ordered Universe oh lordy lord no!! and then reading the other side of the defense w/ people like gina arnold writing about how she's the most influential arteest since elvis..it was all hilarious. i wish someone like this would release an album eveyr year!
i had low expectations of madonna once i heard the evil beast that is mirwais was returning, but she kind of turned all expectations into farce..i kind of think it's funny that she's just moved onto writing children's book about eh, spirituality now (so inspirational after kissing 2 girl mouseketeers!) without publicly blinking at all, as if the music thing was just being done to pay the bills for rocco's future education, oh wait, um ........ i had zero expectations of the white stripes album, but i was very happy with it. maybe i'm turning into a rockist ?

SFA - still think it's a lovely album. But MC Mabon is soooo much better at doing what they do now it's almost a bit sad, really. Plus they've made a pretty poor choice for single #2 (Hello Sunshine - should've been Venus & Serena...)

Like I said on the other thread, I listened to Radiohead a couple of days ago after putting it aside for months, and it really worked for me. Much better to just let the album come to me and enjoy what's there, expectations aside.
As for who they're ripping off (and I assume this refers mostly to the electronic stuff), who cares? The important thing is that they're doing it musically on this album, and it always works to the benefit of the tunes.

i liked that new dirty three record, as far as dirty three albums goi dont like it quite as much as "whatever you love, you are" (which looking back over them seems to be my favorite now) but "She Has No Strings Apollo" is definately the first Dirty three album to remind me that little bit of the Grateful Dead (i mean that in a good way, i really like the Dead, all i mean is its certainly got more of a "groove" thing going on than most d3 albums, id like to find a more fitting word than "groove" but i can't) but anyway, yeah i liked it. not as much as "whatever..." though, as i said. but i can't say i was dissapointed with it, and the live shows i saw by them this year in support of it were great.
I still havent mustered up the will to buy Hail to the Thief yet, i gotta do that sometime soon.
― Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)
When exactly does he do that, Sundar? I can point to songs on all their previous albums that do (and Kid A is easily my favorite of their albums with my favorite vocals), but Hail To The Thief is the first one where he says nothing to me that I have any interest in hearing.

In "Myxomatosis" he actually sounds like he has some attitude to him. When "2+2=5" gets rocking, he even sounds a little giddy, sounds like he's spitting out the words with some defiance, even gets almost Robert Plant-y in a weird way. In the verses to "A Wolf At the Door", he sounds more gritty and bitter and paranoid and just-holding-back rather than just plaintive.

Not even they, themselves believe they can. Exactly why they don't bother trying to live up to others' expectations, in the first place.
Not surprised that Electric Six is less CD than it should be: the amount of hype they got this year, it's as if you expected them to whip the industry into shape all be themselves. Hard to do, when a band only has one worthy gimmick.
