the album your reputation depends on

Okay, I laid awake all last night on this one. This is not,
'Your favorite album'... but an album that can wake the dead. If you are drunk and confused and the party has moved to your house and it can die or you can make the most important musical desicion in your life...or she/he is a dream and it's all down to the cd you play...or a friend ask you to recomend something and if they don't GET IT then they are NOT YOUR FRIEND ANYMORE. Then what do you play? I want to know, so I can make sure its in my collection.

Speedy Gonzalas (Speedy Gonzalas), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 07:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Vitalic, not out yet.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 07:38 (twenty-two years ago)

It depends entirely on which friend it is, what the party's been like, who the girl/boy is...

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 07:45 (twenty-two years ago)

yes
depends

but in the past (6-10 yrs ago?) what worked:
Tom Verlaine - Warm and Cool
Unrest - Imperial ffr

last week when the party came to my house it was all:
best of biggie bootleg canal street CD
columbia slide guitar comp - bottles, knives, & steel
and homemade music playback (that stuff we played that one time)

autovac (autovac), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 08:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Davey Graham always seems to go down well (Folk, Blues & Beyond). The Shaggs work until smarmy git (always) says: Yes, I think we've heard enough of this. Ken Nordine's Colors seems to be the one most people want a copy of...along with Francoise Hardy's Ma Jeunesse Fout le Camp, and if things are still swinging, a St Etienne 'Best of...'.

Jez (Jez), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 10:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Blue Break beats

yaeger, Tuesday, 16 September 2003 10:54 (twenty-two years ago)

'Studio One Rockers' or 'The Lexicon Of Love' or 'Motown Gold'. All tried, all worked.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 11:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Interesting if all-over-the-place question (really three questions). Might depend on the company or the 'pace' of the party, no?

It could be anything from Paul's Boutique by the Beastie Boys through Spirit of Eden by Talk Talk.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 11:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex in NYC has convinced me of his reputation.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

ronan OTM, although my answer could just as easily be a Factory compilation..

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

If you don't find any value on "Mellon Collie...", than you are no friend of mine.

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Well fuck you too.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't have parties, I don't have friends, so this question is moot anyway. Besides, I'm perverse and I put things on at parties to test the people there, ha ha ha.

I think I might even be bored with my own canonical albums anyway. Though I nearly rowed with HSA the other night over his not falling down in adulation over The Velvet Underground and Nico. What a weird record. I forget sometimes cause it's so familiar to me, how strange it is to someone hearing it for the first time. Everything's out of tune, everything's slightly off rhtyhm, the lyrics are sometimes freaking embarrassingly dire, but god do I love it and if you don't, well, it's my party and you can leave.

kate (kate), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

my first reaction to that record was "wow, lou reed actually used to sing rather than mumble, this is much better than his solo tripe"

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

ACtually, I've changed my mind. Because I hate most people who love the Velvet Underground. Because they tend to fixate on the things - the dark shades, the leather, the drugs, oh the darkness - which I find most boring and embarrassing about them, rather than the things that I actually find interesting - oh, the drones, the atonality, the oddness, the drones, the drones...

kate (kate), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

get the Nuggets Box set and the Funk Box set and throw them in a multi-tray CD player and press shuffle

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 12:49 (twenty-two years ago)

i won't repeat what was said by my bandmate last time i put the nuggets box on in their presence :(

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

sack yer bandmate.

kate (kate), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

get yer bandmate in the sack

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha ha

the album my reputation depends on

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess the question is kind of all over the place. Everybody has albums that they love, but that can be so taste subjective. If I ask "what is your favorite album?", then I only learn about your taste in music. But let us say that you ask me about punk, what should you listen to, where to start. I probably wouldn't give you "Less Talk, More Rock" but I would grab "Rocket to Russia". And if you start ragging The Ramones then , you probably won't like Propaganhdi. So, what do you give to me, to say, "You should listen to this."?

Speedy Gonzalas (Speedy Gonzalas), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

it's kind of a toss up between mellon collie and ok computer, of course, who my company is can completely change that. i have become less good friends with people for not being able to find beautiful songs behind the recording quality of "all hail west texas."

Felcher (Felcher), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Because they tend to fixate on the things - the dark shades, the leather, the drugs, oh the darkness - which I find most boring and embarrassing about them

Funny, after all these years (and all these, er, shades, leather and darkness) I STILL find those to be among the most compelling things about them!

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

funkentelechy
vs. the placebo syndrome

uh-huh oh yeah

used to be p5's
happy end of the world but
no one else loves it

don't you realize
this was the BREAKBEAT TRIUMPH,
the PERFECT WEIRD POP?!?!?

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

drive like jehu - yank crime:

prog vs. hc, screamo vs. indie, whatever... at the time, it was the soundtrack to heavy localism paranoia at swami's, sending the che cafe fashion show reeling as steady blasts of sound rapidly replaced even oxygen...

my legs are crossed
and i needn't spread them
cuz i can afford:
piety
chastity
charity
your company

even haters recognize it's the first emo record ever put out by a major. "top 5 at lou's", yeah well? can 120 encinitas residents be wrong?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, I'd put the LP of Supertramp's Breakfast in America on at the wrong speed (say, 78 rpm) and let that set the mood.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex, I don't think
that is the wrong speed. better:
16 rpm

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Gravediggaz - 6 Feet Deep. Even people who "FUCKIN' HATE THAT RAP SHIT" will dig this record. I could go on and on about how brilliant and underrated it is, but eh..... go get it for your next party.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

chrome "half machine lip moves" will jumpstart any (dance) party i want to attend.

Ommmm, Tuesday, 16 September 2003 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

everclear, american music club. Not a party album obviously, but anyone who can't see the worth in it has a hole in their soul, as far as I'm concerned.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Static Age by the Misfits. If ya can't appreciate its heady cocktail of head-bludgeoning brute force, bass oomph, stubborn pop hooks and ridiculous lyrics, then you get the keys to the street!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, I'd put the LP of Supertramp's Breakfast in America on at the wrong speed (say, 78 rpm) and let that set the mood.
-- Alex in NYC

Alex, I don't think
that is the wrong speed. better:
16 rpm -- Haikunym

Ahem, also Spring Heel Jack's There Are String sounds ace on 45 rpm,
or at the very least, "Lee Perry" does.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

if you don't like "like glue" then i don't like you.

(i didn't choose it just so i could type that).

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

used to be p5's
happy end of the world but
no one else loves it

It's great! ...although they could have left on the Contact/Pocket Calculator mix.

Jez (Jez), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

motorhead - ace of spades or the stooges - funhouse

sean marvin (williamtell), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Gygax's assessment of Yank Crime is entirely OTM--that album is essential and key to understanding those arguments from a historical point of view.

I'd also put on the list Neutral Milk Hotel's "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea", though I find I may be growing out of that and into a phase that relies more on timbre and funkiness than acoustic guitars and pseudo-philosophy.

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Agreed on Gravediggaz; Prince Paul + RZA = damn near everything that made early '90s East Coast hip-hop get fucking crazy -- and on near-opposite ends of the spectrum; who'd've thought the producer of busy-ass disco-funk sexoramic sample hemmorhage "Keepin' the Faith" would hook up with the dude responsible for "Method Man"'s PLONG PLONG PLONG PLONG?

And if you can't get with the Chemical Brothers' Surrender, Beck's Mellow Gold, Van Halen's debut, (the kinda aforementioned) De La Soul Is Dead or Funkadelic's America Eats Its Young, get out of my apartment pls k thx.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd say 'Funhouse,' sure, but ultimately it comes down to 'The Perfect Prescription.' Anyone who cocks their nose and says its droney or dull or what have you gets the door...

M Specktor (M Specktor), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Probably the Trojan Tighten Up best of. Anyone who does not get at least some kind of pleasure from it must be a sick, souless bastard.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

human league - dare! or travelogue.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish mine could be Street Hassle, but I fear it's probably closer to Season of Glass or The Touch of Leonard Nimoy. I guess that's why I don't invite folks over much.

Charlie Rose (Charlie Rose), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 00:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, the first Modern Lovers record is quite applicable here.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Having neglected to make a choice before, maybe now I choose Lightning Bolt "Ride The Skies."

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Conversational/few drinks party: Stereolab's Mars Audiac Quintet. Background-y enough when it needs to be, then picks up.

Throw-down: Houses of the Holy. Actually I made this one up. But I would play it. Haven't hosted a throwdown since all my friends demanded something like unrest or ben lee or some crap.

The Black Album used to either make or break a party. There are people who just don't like Prince and this was esp. true when this album was a bootleg. Late eighties or something. People would be "what is this crap? Is this Prince?"
"Yeah, man. Nobody has this, it's like..."
Then people would shake their head with a sour look to their face.

p.j. (Henry), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

"Actually, the first Modern Lovers record is quite applicable here."
i burned a copy of this for my girlfriend, and she told me they were a shitty Doors ripoff. She doesn't know it, but i still haven't forgiven her for that.

Felcher (Felcher), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

That Gravediggaz disc is indeed indispensible, it's so gnarly and seems really ridiculous to most people at first but when you pay attention there's some seriously hardcore shit on there!

I'd also say that going with albums featuring beats by Premier = UNFUCKWITHABLE (my favs = Nas' Illmatic and Non-Phixion's The Future Is Now). Even DMB-lovin' fratboys nod their heads.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

she told me they were a shitty Doors ripoff.

Was she even listening?

She doesn't know it, but i still haven't forgiven her for that.

Good. Nor should you. Ever.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

How can one not like Bob Marley?
Or the Violent Femmes?
Or Doc Watson?
or Ru Paul!

christoff (christoff), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't like the violent femmes.
Violently.

p.j. (Henry), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

RuPaul irritates me.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

then stop rubbing on him.

Brandon Welch (Brandon Welch), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I would put on some Birthday Party or maybe the EX.
I used to put on Big Black but now I only have about friends (and they are scary)

Brandon Welch (Brandon Welch), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

for some reason the word "five" as in the number of friends I have, did not appear.

Brandon Welch (Brandon Welch), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

My gut reaction is to say "Let It Be" by the Replacements, but my reaction to a dream girl not adoring it wouldn't be to get huffy or anything (hey, I didn't think it was supergreat when I first heard it). That said, if she thought it was the best thing since sliced bread, I'd probably like her a heavy bit more.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Stevie Wonder - Innervisions

or

I'll agree with Alex the Misfits can definatly set the mood although I would probably put Bullet on first then Legacy of Brutality

hector (hector), Thursday, 18 September 2003 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

"Alex, I don't think
that is the wrong speed. better:
16 rpm"

I'm with Alex
It will last far too long at
16 RPM.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 18 September 2003 07:36 (twenty-two years ago)

What a bunch of dumbass answers. If you were looking to keep the party going, I'd go with:

Nu - AlphaBravoShockPopDisco

blutroniq (blutroniq), Thursday, 18 September 2003 07:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish mine could be Street Hassle, but I fear it's probably closer to Season of Glass or The Touch of Leonard Nimoy. I guess that's why I don't invite folks over much.

-- Charlie Rose (charlieros...), September 17th, 2003.

Holy cow. I drive people away with exactly the same records you do. You know, "The Touch of Leonard Nimoy" really is different from the other Leonard Nimoy albums. "The Two Sides" and "The Way I Feel" can go straight to Hell. "The Touch" rules.

Salmon Pink (Salmon Pink), Thursday, 18 September 2003 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Ru Paul, of course was a joke -- but, more than that i think i somewhat misunderstood the original question.

I totally agree that the Femmes could really rub some folks the wrong way, which is fine, but i don't see how anybody couldn't get into John Mayall's Turning Point.

christoff (christoff), Friday, 19 September 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)
