"Curse of Blondie": I'm almost afraid to ask (C/D of sorts)

I was startled to learn they had a new single out. Listened to it... it's decentish synthopop stuff, but I didn't stick with me too significantly. And it turns out they have a new full-length.

And I'm downloading it now.

I'm even scareder than I was with the Outkast album.

They released their last good album a month after I turned two.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 01:53 (twenty-two years ago)

(And what a good album that was, albeit a retardedly-titled one)

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 01:54 (twenty-two years ago)

"Maria" from the last one was a sick single, you have to admit.

scott m (mcd), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 01:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Autoamerican is great if uneven, put down the crack pipe Nate

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Silly goat, this is crank. With an n!

Still, if I took yr advice, then it'd be "they released their last good album two months after I turned three" and that's still pretty sad

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 02:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Eat to the Beat is a terrible title isn't it? what were they thinking? Yum, gob down some lunch to that disco sound, groovers!

The line was appropriated by Fast Food Rockers of course.

It was also used to sell Chico Rolls here in Australia. Do you get these anywhere else? They only taste good if you are a teenager.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 02:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm with John D. - Autoamerican has some really nice moments.

This new one I'm not so sure about. I haven't found any nice moments on it, but maybe it will grow on me. I thought No Exit was surprisingly strong, despite the terrible title track. Curse seems to have a lot of electronic percussion and that makes me sad - I want my Clem Burke straight up.

Kent Burt (lingereffect), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 10:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Clem Burke was barely recognisable on No Exit. He was mixed too low. Or maybe I'm misremembering. Maria was a great single, no doubt. "Good Boys" is not a good single.

"Maria" from the last one was a sick single, you have to admit.

If by "sick" you mean absolute trash, then yes, I'll admit that. C'mon...."Maria, you have to see her....go insane and out of your mind."

They came back after seventeen years to tell us THAT?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

hey, alex, what do you expect them to come back and tell us? they were hardly the poets of their generation...

phil turnbull (philT), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

True (witness the asinine lyrics to my beloved "Atomic"), but I just thought "Maria" was especially banal.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I really really really really love the new single.

smoky topaz (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 21:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Rest of the album's not so hot, but I've probably played "Good Boys" 25 times by now.

smoky topaz (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

It's very summer-of-'88. Sounds exactly like the type of single Debbie would have released that year. Big SAW influence.

smoky topaz (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

The single is great, the rest of the album is slightly dire apart from 'Songs Of Love' which is the best raddled-bitter-old-woman-torch-song I've heard in ages.

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 20 September 2003 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the album rocks!
Except for 4 really wishy washy trax, i think its close to their Hunter album (which was the last album b4 they split.. eeek)
Its eclectic, the rockier trax are back, with the addition of some synth...

one month passes...
Does she actually sing "You've got me on your face" on this?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 8 November 2003 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

four months pass...

todd withrow, Saturday, 13 March 2004 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

The first two tracks are massively classic. Lags a bit after that, but, come on... "Shakedown"! That's like one of the three best Blondie tracks ever.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 13 March 2004 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

seven years pass...

Never knew there was a video of this. As mentioned upthread if you crossed out the date printed on the record and wrote in "1988" you'd have the exact artifact.

Video is like something from 1988. The song kills btw

Stockhausen's Ekranoplan Quartet (Elvis Telecom), Saturday, 13 August 2011 04:22 (fourteen years ago)

Nobody seems to have noticed, but apparently they have a new album out. I haven't heard it yet. Any thoughts?

jer.fairall, Saturday, 13 August 2011 05:01 (fourteen years ago)

They gave away a few of the songs free last year. The next single, "What I Heard", is probably the best thing on it.

unskinny blap (edwardo), Saturday, 13 August 2011 16:49 (fourteen years ago)

Made me want to re-evaluate "Curse" agian - there's some fine stuff on there from memory: "Shakedown", "Come Undone", "The Tingler", "Songs Of Love"...

unskinny blap (edwardo), Saturday, 13 August 2011 16:51 (fourteen years ago)

their tour here last year was actually to promote the album, but 4080

one month passes...

Finally gave Panic of Girls a spin and it pains me to report that its not good at all, and I loved No Exit and liked Curse of Blondie.
