History of Rock Written By the Losers

"From discussing long-defunct record labels to analyzing the impact of a band's personnel changes, rock historians cannot see beyond their acne-scarred noses to realize that there are interesting subjects in the world besides music," said Yates, a self-professed "ex-music-nerd." "If you ask them who the U.S. attorney general is, or what's going on in the park around the corner, you'll get a blank stare. But ask which member of The Doors produced Los Angeles, the debut album by X, and you'll have to dodge all the flying spittle from everyone trying to be the first to answer."

Added Yates: "It was Ray Manzarek."

Oh I cannot wait to see the reaction to THIS.

music geeks drive like this

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 02:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I bet they were all ready to write something about anime nerds but then figured they were lost for references after Cowboy Bebop and Neon Genesis Evangelion

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Like most late-model Onion, the headline is the best part (and the only part really worth reading)

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 02:41 (twenty-two years ago)

music geeks are pretty lame though

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 02:48 (twenty-two years ago)

no more or less than any other type of geek though

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

except maybe train spotting geeks

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

and animal husbandry geeks

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 02:52 (twenty-two years ago)

except they're doing something useful

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 02:52 (twenty-two years ago)

gimme a policy wonk over a music geek any day

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 02:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm confused. Who here is not a music geek?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 02:56 (twenty-two years ago)

and what is a policy wonk?

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 02:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, what is a policy wonk?

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

This article isn't very funny at all. What's it saying? Music geeks are geeks? Good one!

David Allen, Wednesday, 17 September 2003 03:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn, I was going to post this. ILM in the Onion! How cool!!

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

The article appears to be saying, only what is mainstream and popular is worthy of documentation.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 03:41 (twenty-two years ago)

nah, it's just saying most of the world couldn't give a shit.

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 04:06 (twenty-two years ago)

... and aren't these funny people silly, because they do? Hahaha! They give a shit about stuff we don't! They're in the minority! Hahaha!

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 04:08 (twenty-two years ago)

i feel the same way about people who are really into following sports

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 04:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, me too. Right, back to my stamp collection.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 04:11 (twenty-two years ago)

eh, I hate reading people writing about music so the article made me laugh. (but yes it was predictable.)

You *know* I'm burned out from grading papers if I'm venturing over to ILM from ILE. . .

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Nothing like grading papers to put a hole in your brain.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 04:16 (twenty-two years ago)

defensive music geeks are even worse

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 04:17 (twenty-two years ago)

policy wonk:

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm both a "policy wonk" and a music freak... i'm allowed! We're not so bad, are we? Although I'm aware of the annoying qualities that I posess whenever I show others my music collection and launch into long explanations everytime they ask questions like "Who is Wilco?"

I., Wednesday, 17 September 2003 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I like geeks. I like freaks. But most of all, I like freaky geeks and geeky freaks. Policy wonks? They're, uh, ok, I guess.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 04:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Wilco is the stuff of music nerds now? What has the world come to. . .

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

what the... Blount, is that Eric Bischoff?

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 09:52 (twenty-two years ago)

the Lester Bangs biography on the table of the Onion photo is a nice touch.

badgerminor (badgerminor), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 11:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i hate rock geeks. i love pop geeks.
there's yer old style rock geek
(beach boys, dylan, springsteen, bla bla)
and the new style morley type pop geek
(kraftwerk, moroder, motown, new order, screamadelica)
hey who wouldnt want to be a pop geek ?!

piscesboy, Wednesday, 17 September 2003 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

If you ask them who the U.S. attorney general is....

John Ashcroft

..or what's going on in the park around the corner....

Why would this be considered a current event? The park around my corner is Washington Square Park, and there's precious little going on there apart from kids playing on jungle gyms, irritating NYU students shooting shoddy films and rastafarians peddling skunk weed.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I would say this should be seen as a joke and not as a personal affront. It's the Onion for the love of god. They make fun of everything and everyone.

ham on rye (ham on rye), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

"David Byrne's influence can still be heard in modern hip-hop."

Funniest sentence ever.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

It just seems kind of lazily written... it doesn't really nail its target too well. (Filing CDs alphabetically = being a music geek?)

Sam J. (samjeff), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

grr I don't like that my name is so high up on that 'stupid gfs at shows' thread, which is what it turned into...

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

i think im more of a geeky freak than a freaky geek.

Felcher (Felcher), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, music geeks who seem to celebrate their geekiness, perhaps even with a self-conciously nerdy webpage title, are really lame

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

it doesn't really nail its target too well. (Filing CDs alphabetically = being a music geek?)

The funny part about that was that the guy had a section in his music collection called "British Invasion" - and the CDs in that section were alphabetized.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

o. nate OTM.
