I have had Guitar and other machines since about '89 or '90 and have loved it. What is the next album I should buy?

actually i don't know, i've not heard the album you've got. but those two are often held to be his best.

'Circuses and Bread' would be a good stop as well (I like that record, a lot.) The earlier stuff is more austere; 'Guitar and Other Machines' is the first time he really went for the pop jugular (by his standards). But work your way earlier in the discography, then go later. Skip 'Obey The Time'.

If you liked "Guitar..." then try "Vini Reilly" next, as it's like "Son of Guitar... with Samplers too", which makes it a damn fine record. Agree with JL above - get as much DC as you can, as entry points try "Vini Reilly", "LC", "Circuses and bread" and "Sex and death", then work your way from there. There's not a lot bad with any DC record, even "Obey the time", but leave that 'til last.

ditto vini reilly, honestly this and "guitar" are the only two I really listen to with regularity. The new one is pretty good.

I admit I stopped keeping up about ten years ago, after 'Obey The Time' and 'Sex and Death', not bad records, just a bit staying-in-place... (in the early 90's, these were $25 imports here in the US)... I don't have 'Vini Reilly', will have to check that one out.

If you like "Guitar and other machines", I'd have to agree with one of the other posters that "Vini Reilly" should be your next port of call if you're looking for something in a similar vein.

By all means though if you have the time/cash investigate some of the early albums. "Valuable Passages" is a great compilation that will give you a bit of a taster of what Vini was up to earlier in his career. Includes tracks from "Return" and "LC", as recommended above.

The new album's good too! Bit of a grower.
