ILM ten desert island artists - the rules are these: you may remove one artist per post, and add one to replace it. Explain why. Reproduce current list in post. No artist who has been removed may be later added.

Julie London
Velvet Underground
Françoise Hardy
Scott Walker
Marvin Gaye
Serge Gainsbourg
David Bowie
Joy Division
Kylie Minogue
Cat Power

Susan (Susan), Friday, 19 September 2003 09:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Take out Serge Gainsbourg for inventing Trip hop

and add the Fall

Julie London
Velvet Underground
Françoise Hardy
Scott Walker
The Fall
David Bowie
Joy Division
Kylie Minogue
Cat Power

MikeB, Friday, 19 September 2003 09:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Orbital
Velvet Underground
Françoise Hardy
Scott Walker
The Fall
David Bowie
Joy Division
Kylie Minogue
Cat Power

Take out Julie London cos I don't know who she is; add Orbital cos they're great.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 19 September 2003 09:16 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a hard choice but I think the VU have to go - nobody else will bin them and I can't bear listening to them in bustling London, let along on a desert island. I'd replace them with Lata Mangeshkar, who beats most-comers in prolificity (?) so you'd have plenty of variety, and because not much gets me up in the morning better than Bollywood music.

Orbital
Lata Mangeshkar
Françoise Hardy
Scott Walker
The Fall
David Bowie
Joy Division
Kylie Minogue
Cat Power

Tom (Groke), Friday, 19 September 2003 09:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Marvin Gaye somehow got accidently removed, so I'm putting him back in to make up ten... oh and I've never heard of Lata Mangeshkar, who he?

Orbital
Lata Mangeshkar
Françoise Hardy
Marvin Gaye
Scott Walker
The Fall
David Bowie
Joy Division
Kylie Minogue
Cat Power

Susan (Susan), Friday, 19 September 2003 09:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Lata Mangeshkar = Asha Bhosle's sister, super-prolific Indian film industry recording artist. She'll be on pretty much any Bollywood compilation you care to mention and Nascente do a nice one-disc best-of too.

NB Nick Southall you should pick up a cheapo Julie London comp, she's fab!

Tom (Groke), Friday, 19 September 2003 09:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Francoise Hardy, pretty tender in a blissed-out urban context, would be too sirupy on a desert island, so I'd replace her with Joni Mitchell for some jazzy introspective nights on the beach:

Orbital
Lata Mangeshkar
Joni Mitchell
Marvin Gaye
Scott Walker
The Fall
David Bowie
Joy Division
Kylie Minogue
Cat Power

Fabrice (Fabfunk), Friday, 19 September 2003 09:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, I used to listen to Joy Division when I was 17 too, and I love them dearly, but come on, would you really want to listen to Atrocity Exhibition on a desert island?

Orbital
Lata Mangeshkar
Françoise Hardy
Marvin Gaye
Scott Walker
The Fall
David Bowie
New Order
Kylie Minogue
Cat Power

P.J. Harvey-Nicks, Friday, 19 September 2003 09:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Whoops, that should be:

Orbital
Lata Mangeshkar
Joni Mitchell
Marvin Gaye
Scott Walker
The Fall
David Bowie
New Order
Kylie Minogue
Cat Power

P.J. Harvey-Nicks, Friday, 19 September 2003 09:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I vote to remove Lata cos I (still) don't know enough about her. I'm voting for Steve Albini to replace her cos he is with me in everything I do (this is a slight exaggeration).

I originally interpreted this as having the actual people on the island, not just their records. Which I think would be a better game. Or is that what you meant?

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 19 September 2003 09:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm, no I was more thinking of trying to hone down a group of 10 artists (musically) that we can sort of all agree on... or what the fuck it's only a stupid thread! My bosses really need to give me some work to do one of these days...

It now stands:

Orbital
Steve Albini
Joni Mitchell
Marvin Gaye
Scott Walker
The Fall
David Bowie
New Order
Kylie Minogue
Cat Power

Susan (Susan), Friday, 19 September 2003 09:50 (twenty-two years ago)

"a group of 10 artists (musically) that we can sort of all agree on"

I personally feel confident that we shall quickly reach a unarguable conclusion here.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 19 September 2003 09:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Remove The Fall because they make rock music, and rock music sucks. Replace them with Duke Ellington, because I've never heard anyone say a bad word about the Duke.

So the list is now like this:

Orbital
Steve Albini
Joni Mitchell
Marvin Gaye
Scott Walker
Duke Ellington
David Bowie
New Order
Kylie Minogue
Cat Power

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 19 September 2003 09:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Orbital are a bit boring, aren't they?

Captain Beefheart
Steve Albini
Joni Mitchell
Marvin Gaye
Scott Walker
Duke Ellington
David Bowie
New Order
Kylie Minogue
Cat Power

Lady Grinning Soul, Friday, 19 September 2003 09:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Remove Steve Albini because he fucked up PJ Harvey's Rid Of Me. Replace him with PJ Harvey. (sorry Mencap!)

Captain Beefheart
PJ Harvey
Joni Mitchell
Marvin Gaye
Scott Walker
Duke Ellington
David Bowie
New Order
Kylie Minogue
Cat Power

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 19 September 2003 09:59 (twenty-two years ago)

(Susan I think this is a great thread! I wish I'd thought of it! The desert island music regimen is getting stricter and stricter though!)

Tom (Groke), Friday, 19 September 2003 10:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd remove Bowie for the purely subjective reason that I despise the sound of his voice. Although I'd be tempted to replace him with Orbital again, but I think that's cheating, so I'd replace him with Jean Sibelius... need something really *expansive* for those desert island sunsets (also I'm wondering how long a classical composer would last in this game).

Captain Beefheart
PJ Harvey
Joni Mitchell
Marvin Gaye
Scott Walker
Duke Ellington
Jean Sibelius
New Order
Kylie Minogue
Cat Power

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 19 September 2003 10:08 (twenty-two years ago)

You know, this list actually is beginning to look like what I might want to laze the days away with on a desert island. I think I'll dump New Order though and add Krafwerk. Same thing only better.

Captain Beefheart
PJ Harvey
Joni Mitchell
Marvin Gaye
Scott Walker
Duke Ellington
Jean Sibelius
Kraftwerk
Kylie Minogue
Cat Power

Jonathan Z., Friday, 19 September 2003 10:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Take out Scott Walker, if I am on a tropical island, I wouldn't want to hear songs about Stalin.

Add Professor Longhair, because if I am on a tropical island, I want it to be a party.

Captain Beefheart
PJ Harvey
Joni Mitchell
Marvin Gaye
Professor Longhair
Duke Ellington
Jean Sibelius
Kraftwerk
Kylie Minogue
Cat Power

earlnash, Friday, 19 September 2003 10:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Get rid of Kylie for her late-90s career moves (appearing in the Vicar of Dibley? Hosting Top of the Pops?). Replace her with Sammy Davis Jnr, if only because someone reminded me of the "You may be wondering why I asked you here" joke the other day.

Captain Beefheart
PJ Harvey
Joni Mitchell
Marvin Gaye
Professor Longhair
Duke Ellington
Jean Sibelius
Kraftwerk
Sammy Davis Jnr
Cat Power

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 19 September 2003 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Beefheart goes for booting my beloved Orbital; in comes Miles Davis.

Miles Davis
PJ Harvey
Joni Mitchell
Marvin Gaye
Professor Longhair
Duke Ellington
Jean Sibelius
Kraftwerk
Kylie Minogue
Cat Power

(x=post w/Dom)

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 19 September 2003 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm amazed that Cat Power has lasted so long. I mean she's great, but something of the plucky underdog in this company. However she's better than Joni Mitchell, so she can get gone instead. I'm going to throw Lemmy in, just to be a boorish cunt. So:

Miles Davis
PJ Harvey
Lemmy
Marvin Gaye
Professor Longhair
Duke Ellington
Jean Sibelius
Kraftwerk
Kylie Minogue
Cat Power

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 19 September 2003 10:20 (twenty-two years ago)

You need some pop on a desert island - and who better to provide the pop than ABBA? Rather meanly I'm going to ditch Cat Power without even knowing her stuff that well, but the only other one I don't know is Professor Longhair and he has a great name.

Miles Davis
PJ Harvey
Lemmy
Marvin Gaye
Professor Longhair
Duke Ellington
Jean Sibelius
Kraftwerk
Sammy Davis Jr
ABBA

Tom (Groke), Friday, 19 September 2003 10:22 (twenty-two years ago)

No I've never heard of old Longhair either and I'm pissed off Scott's gone - what to do but go for Jacques Brel...

Miles Davis
PJ Harvey
Lemmy
Marvin Gaye
Jacques Brel
Duke Ellington
Jean Sibelius
Kraftwerk
Sammy Davis Jr
ABBA

Susan (Susan), Friday, 19 September 2003 10:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm chucking Lemmy out, who needs stuff like that on a desert island? In his place goes Brian Eno, obviously.

Miles Davis
PJ Harvey
Brian Eno
Marvin Gaye
Professor Longhair
Duke Ellington
Jean Sibelius
Kraftwerk
Kylie Minogue
Cat Power

Rob M (Rob M), Friday, 19 September 2003 10:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Bugger, got in too late - ignore me then.

Rob M (Rob M), Friday, 19 September 2003 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

(Professor Longhair: 60s New Orleans piano funk god)

If we keep ABBA on the island, people may feel tempted to start throwing ABBA parties. That I cannot condone. What I can condone, though, is ODB.

Miles Davis
PJ Harvey
Lemmy
Marvin Gaye
Jacques Brel
Duke Ellington
Jean Sibelius
Kraftwerk
Sammy Davis Jr
ODB

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 19 September 2003 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I just split-up with my girlfriend and need to listen to Gillian Welch's "I Dream A Hiway" as I mope. So bye-bye Sammy.

Miles Davis
PJ Harvey
Lemmy
Marvin Gaye
Jacques Brel
Duke Ellington
Jean Sibelius
Kraftwerk
Gillian Welch
ODB

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 19 September 2003 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I need Talk Talk too, so Lemmy goes. As much for being in Hardware (worst film evah) as anything else.

Miles Davis
PJ Harvey
Talk Talk
Marvin Gaye
Jacques Brel
Duke Ellington
Jean Sibelius
Kraftwerk
Gillian Welch
ODB

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 19 September 2003 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I remove ODB and replace him with TIMBALAND. This may well be cheating, but it just opens up such a vast pool of material.

Miles Davis
PJ Harvey
Talk Talk
Marvin Gaye
Jacques Brel
Duke Ellington
Jean Sibelius
Kraftwerk
Gillian Welch
Timbaland

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 19 September 2003 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Taking Sides: not understanding the words (Jaques Brel) vs understanding the words but not always anything else (Kate Bush)

Miles Davis
PJ Harvey
Talk Talk
Marvin Gaye
Kate Bush
Duke Ellington
Jean Sibelius
Kraftwerk
Gillian Welch
Timbaland

Tom (Groke), Friday, 19 September 2003 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Timbaland expelled for cheating. In comes Aretha Franklin.

Miles Davis
PJ Harvey
Talk Talk
Marvin Gaye
Jacques Brel
Duke Ellington
Jean Sibelius
Kraftwerk
Gillian Welch
Aretha Franklin

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 19 September 2003 10:39 (twenty-two years ago)

If I was to compile a list of the worst songs ever, Polly Jean's "C'mon Billy" would be a top twenty lock. And, to quote the Sopranos, "You wanna get some Skynyrd"

Miles Davis
Talk Talk
Marvin Gaye
Jacques Brel
Duke Ellington
Jean Sibelius
Kraftwerk
Gillian Welch
Aretha Franklin
Lynyrd Skynyrd

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 19 September 2003 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Tori Amos once sang an excerpt from Skynyrd's 'Sweet Home Alabama' on the radio as a joke and even then pissed all over their entire career in one go.

Miles Davis
Talk Talk
Marvin Gaye
Jacques Brel
Duke Ellington
Jean Sibelius
Kraftwerk
Gillian Welch
Aretha Franklin
Tori Amos

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 19 September 2003 10:47 (twenty-two years ago)

if she lasts more than like two posts I will be flabbergasted

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 19 September 2003 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

in a good way!

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 19 September 2003 10:49 (twenty-two years ago)

If I couldn't get Kate Bush in last time I damn well will this time. But I'll spare a flamewar with The Lex and kick out Jacques (again) not Tori.

Miles Davis
Talk Talk
Marvin Gaye
Kate Bush
Duke Ellington
Jean Sibelius
Kraftwerk
Gillian Welch
Aretha Franklin
Tori Amos

Tom (Groke), Friday, 19 September 2003 10:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I always thought Kraftwerk were boring arse, but I love Can.

Miles Davis
Talk Talk
Marvin Gaye
Kate Bush
Duke Ellington
Jean Sibelius
Can
Gillian Welch
Aretha Franklin
Tori Amos

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 19 September 2003 10:52 (twenty-two years ago)

No one needs Kate Bush AND Tori Amos on a desert island. Tori is axed, replaced by Thomas Bangalter. I want to watch the sunrise listening to French filterdisco.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 19 September 2003 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Miles Davis
Talk Talk
Marvin Gaye
Kate Bush
Duke Ellington
Jean Sibelius
Can
Gillian Welch
Aretha Franklin
Thomas Bangalter

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 19 September 2003 10:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I know it's wrong to blame Miles Davis for Miles Davis obsessives, but still... have I ever mentioned my musical hero is Mark Knopfler? I have? Hmmm.

Talk Talk
Marvin Gaye
Kate Bush
Duke Ellington
Jean Sibelius
Can
Gillian Welch
Aretha Franklin
Thomas Bangalter
Mark Knopfler.

(and if he makes it past the next post I'll be shocked)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 19 September 2003 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Dom is evil. In comes Jason Pierce's mangy bunch.

Talk Talk
Marvin Gaye
Kate Bush
Duke Ellington
Jean Sibelius
Can
Gillian Welch
Aretha Franklin
Thomas Bangalter
Spiritualized

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 19 September 2003 10:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Spiritualized
Talk Talk
Marvin Gaye
Kate Bush
Duke Ellington
Jean Sibelius
Can
Althea And Donna
Aretha Franklin
Thomas Bangalter

Tom (Groke), Friday, 19 September 2003 11:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Marvin Gaye is the soul survivor (arf)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 19 September 2003 11:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Spiritualized
Talk Talk
Marvin Gaye
Kate Bush
Duke Ellington
Britney Spears
Can
Althea And Donna
Aretha Franklin
Thomas Bangalter

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 19 September 2003 11:01 (twenty-two years ago)

TORI LASTED TWO POSTS, TRIUMPH IS MINE!!!! Ahem.

Knopfler is spared because I have a bigger bone to pick with Thomas Bangalter, who makes inhuman soulless BAD techno. Replace with Beyoncé, who you can dance to AND who makes you smile. Also if we're there for long enough we may even be able to perfect the arse dance.

Talk Talk
Marvin Gaye
Kate Bush
Duke Ellington
Jean Sibelius
Can
Gillian Welch
Aretha Franklin
Beyoncé
Mark Knopfler

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 19 September 2003 11:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Britney Spears
Can
Althea And Donna
Aretha Franklin
Beyoncé

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 19 September 2003 11:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Never liked Talk Talk very much, so they get the boot in favour of Johnny Cash, for huge body of work and range of emotion.

Spiritualized
Johnny Cash
Marvin Gaye
Kate Bush
Duke Ellington
Britney Spears
Can
Althea And Donna
Aretha Franklin
Beyoncé

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 19 September 2003 11:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Can are just boring after a while, I'd rather have "Forever changes" on my desert island.

Spiritualized
Johnny Cash
Marvin Gaye
Kate Bush
Duke Ellington
Britney Spears
Love
Althea And Donna
Aretha Franklin
Beyoncé

Rob M (Rob M), Friday, 19 September 2003 11:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Björk
Johnny Cash
Marvin Gaye
Kate Bush
Duke Ellington
Britney Spears
Love
Althea And Donna
Aretha Franklin
Beyoncé

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 19 September 2003 11:05 (twenty-two years ago)

PFM

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 September 2003 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I am not indie but i still make a point of pretending. Of needing some underwater help. As per the monster mammal and its monstastomack :)
Captain Nemo to the rescue. Hopefully.

Sandie Shaw
Grandmixer DXT
Fox
Willie Colon
Clinic
The Sea and Cake
John Prine
Me'Shell NdegéOcello
Allen Toussaint
Captain Nemo

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 25 September 2003 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

(Dan do you dislike Prine? I know plenty of non-MN folks who like him the answer, btw, is that his songs are aural Coen Bros. films.)

Sandie Shaw
Grandmixer DXT

Willie Colon
Clinic
The Sea and Cake
John Prine
Me'Shell NdegéOcello

"...who like him. the answer..."

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 25 September 2003 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

(I don't really have an opinion one way or the other, I just was amused because his name only comes up when I talk to Minnesotans.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 25 September 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

(I think you'd like him OK--pretty deadpan absurdist in that MN way.)

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 25 September 2003 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Perfect call on Sandie Shaw. If we must put bands who fluked a chart hit on the back of a jeans advert, may as well go for the kings:

Sandie Shaw
Grandmixer DXT
Big Mama Thornton
Willie Colon
The Lilys
The Sea and Cake
John Prine
Me'Shell NdegéOcello
Allen Toussaint
Captain Nemo

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 25 September 2003 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

The Lilys
The Sea and Cake
John Prine
Me'Shell NdegéOcello
Allen Toussaint

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 25 September 2003 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Shirley Bassey
Sandie Shaw
Grandmixer DXT
Big Mama Thornton
Willie Colon
The Lilys
Sophie Ellis-Bextor
John Prine
Me'Shell NdegéOcello
