What on earth is the etymology of "riddim"? I'm seeing it way too often these days, and it kinda bugs my boring self.

yeah, ok. maybe this could be adressed heretoo.

the genaelogy of the term/notion?

i was talkin to a hiphop head the other day who was sighing over the diwali riddim and i mentioned "classic breaks" as a riposte.

My rule of tumb was "if they go 'biddly biddly bong' -> by this theory grebt pianner artiste VANESSA CARLTON = riddmintastic -> my theory is watertight!

Dancehall is practically the same as 'riddim' but 'riddim' sounds better innit. I've seen posters for it in Walthamstow you know but give me a nice copy of Indie Top 20 and I'm happy.

I'd be incredibly embarrased to read a white rock crit use 'rhythm' when discussing dancehall instrumentals. There really is no argument, it's 'riddim' and has been since the music's conception.

As for the etymology of the word riddim, it hardly takes a rocket scientist to work out does it?

one year passes...
So there's this Sleng Teng Progress: 2K5 riddim disc I got in the mail the other day (reasonable enough lineup -- Sizzla, Beenie Man, etc.)

Listened to MIA's Arular again this week (it's a grower) and after two or three cuts found myself singing "Under me sleng teng..." Played Wayne Smith next and it's a match! Followed that with "Ring The Alarm' by Buju Banton featuring Tenor Saw and then straight to the expanded edition of The Congos from 1977. Jah still rules baby.
