If we're lucky, everyone will forget that _Rattle and Hum_ ever existed.

It's a start.

One Tree Hill in Auckland itself, I found out last year, no longer has the tree on it. Somebody cut it down.

Shake! Shake!...

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 22 September 2003 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

"Contact The Fact"

Paul (scifisoul), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

is it true that "an cat dubh" is gaelic for "i eat pussy"?

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh God, where do I begin?

"A Celebration"
"Trash, Trampoline, And The Party Girl"
"Gloria"
"Seconds"
"I Will Follow"
"I Threw A Brick Through A Window"
"If God Will Send His Angels"
their cover of "Paint It Black"
"The Unforgettable Fire"
"Like A Song..."

My head hurts. I have this intense feeling to name at least 20 other songs, but I am going to try my hardest to let this be it.

Oh yeah, and there was a period of about three or so years when I was insanely angry about the whole U2 mystique thing, mainly because I had become so fed up with the outwardly negative response Duran Duran (my pet cause, apparently... *laughs*) has gotten with the music press and so bitter about how unrelentingly positive the response U2 (whom I also love, but not as intensely) has gotten with the same music press, but then I just let everything go and ever since then, I've been able to really enjoy listening to both artists, no problem.

"Desire" is acoustic? In what universe?

D'oh! Well, just that main guitar riff I guess.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

It always pisses me off when I think about "Desire" because that's honestly the only song on _Rattle And Hum_ I can think of that doesn't fill me with rage and disdain; in fact, it's really good but I'm perfectly willing to let it sink into the abyss if the rest of the album goes with it.

On a happier note, I had no idea that so many people liked "I Threw A Brick Through A Window"!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

am i the only one who likes "god pt 2"?

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 12:11 (twenty-two years ago)

"Some Days Are Better Than Others"

That was really hard.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sorry, Ally.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

heh, 'it's hard cos i love so many of their songs' vs 'it's hard cos i fucking hate so many of their songs', fite!

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

It's ok Alex, I forgive you.

stevem, are you filling in for Ned???

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

This is a tough one for me. I'm tempted to just say tracks 1-10 from Achtung Baby.

I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Wowzer!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

God I didn't mean to derail the thread with this bullshit by pointing out the obnoxiousness level of coming into a POX thread to point out you don't like a band. I apologize to Alex, now.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

A tangent: Did the Pet Shop Boys look to U2 as models for titling songs? How many songs titles with 5+ words does one band need?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

5+

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

No worries, Ally.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Top 10 U2 songs with ridiculously long titles:

Where The Streets Have No Name
I Threw A Brick Though A Window
Until The End Of The World
Even Better Than The Real Thing
I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of
Some Days Are Better Than Others
Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me
Daddy's Gonna Pay For Your Crashed Car
Trash, Trampoline and the Party Girl

No wonder Neil Tennant decided "I Don't Know What You Want But I Can't Give It Anymore" was an acceptable song title!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

In terms of long song titles the White Stripes are actually the current rivals. (And this ties in to me saying that while I remain strictly neutral on that band "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground" is one of the best songtitles ever.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

(I can't believe I forgot "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses?")

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Why are long titles a bad thing? They are mostly pretty strong song titles. Too many people have short song titles, if you ask me. Children of the 90s are especially spoiled by bands who like the one-word titles a bit too much.

I will say that "Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of" is one of the most pointlessly redundant titles I've ever encountered. Does Bono realize that the word 'stuck' implies that you can't get out? Ugh. If they just left it at "Stuck In A Moment," it would have been a really nice, sweet title.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

"stuck in a moment with u2" woulda been even better

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

also, 'Lemon' should've been called 'Melon' - think about it...

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Why are long titles a bad thing?

Peope who are not music obsessives are less likely to remember a title that takes up an entire page.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Michael B, I thought "Ms. Sarajevo" is a Brian Eno song.
another case of "weren't U2 just Eno's 'who's more generally though ?"

Hey, you didn't count my vote for "40"!

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 25 September 2003 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 1 August 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

i'd throw out 'where did it all go wrong' and put in 'stories for boys', maybe switch out a couple of things for 'beautiful day' and 'two hearts beat as one' also.

three years pass...

after seeing them live on a balmy manchester night in 05 and being absolutely astonished, i've been steadily investigating the back catalogue with the help of threads like this. keep em coming! it's way interesting.

never having really known much beyond the biggest hits, i'm coming around to the feeling that had i been a music buyer i'd have loved the pre-RATTLE.. era 80s u2 and that much of that stuff and what followed has been misinterpreted, misunderstood and maligned for no good reason*. i'm pretty amazed to be honest.

*except yeah u know the whole bono thing but hey.
