well, so much for them not being better than radiohead!! i actually heard this before and i thought it was that u2 song, but its really good!! i like the u2 song too though

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 06:34 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah it rules, i don't understand all this fucking coldplay-=-snoring-boring bullshit which is so boring in itself, i mean when was radiohead ooh-thrilling ? maybe the masses need less concept and more "wussy"-rock like this now; this is a melodically perfect song, if you keep complaining coldplay top yogurt and can't see their mass appeal you will probably never understand pop and belong to be pelted by your fucking cds in your fucking super furry animals cds in your fucking ivory tower before it collpases on you

the "dance" mix of this i heard on my local gay station also rules

Vic (Vic), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 07:01 (twenty-two years ago)

DANCE MIX!?!?!!!!

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 07:06 (twenty-two years ago)

well ok it just had like house-y beats interspered into the mix with the general piano melody speeded up, it was cool

Vic (Vic), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 07:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I want to hear that dance mix!

I don't get the Coldplay hate either, they're a bit limp at times but more usually they make lovely pretty melodically perfect music. Look on the bright side, it could be Starsailor (ugh) with all their success.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 07:15 (twenty-two years ago)

its weird how pianos always make alt rock better, see also ben folds, billy joel

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 07:16 (twenty-two years ago)

hahaha, to translate: << complaining coldplay top yogurt and can't see their mass appeal you will probably never understand pop and belong>>
-
complaining -> comparing,
belong -> deserved

Vic (Vic), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 07:18 (twenty-two years ago)

yes but that doesnt explain all the tori hate on here okay i should stop now before derailing thread and getting carried away

anyway yeah coldplay combine a way of being delightful mundane fun and can make it moving in a (populist?) way ugly thom never could, and i say this being a fickle radiohead fan.

Vic (Vic), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 07:21 (twenty-two years ago)

some radiohead songs are good, i stole kid a from my work a couple years ago and i listen to it every six months or so, i like idiotque

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 07:30 (twenty-two years ago)

coldplay are the pm dawn of rock!!!

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 07:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Pianos do make everything better, and that includes Tori Amos!

Radiohead are capable of some really spellbinding moments ("Everything In Its Right Place", "Talk Show Host") but spoil it all by being so po-faced and by completely failing to live up to their own intellectual pose.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 07:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i wonder if i would like other coldplay songs, i dont know.... i remember the video on the grey beach where the sun gradually comes up and it gets ligther and it was pretty but i dont think i ever listened to it with the sound on, in h.s. my civics/social studies teacher liked them alot though, his favorite bands were coldplay and slipknot and his favorite cd was a perfect circle

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 07:42 (twenty-two years ago)

you probably would, they're mostly prety and sweetenough. No piano line to match 'Clocks' anywhere else in their catalogue though.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 07:47 (twenty-two years ago)

trife, i was seriously gonna recommend the royksopp synthpop remix of this to you the other day but i was afraid you would scoff. (i think i like the housier frenchbloke n sonof version more though).

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 08:08 (twenty-two years ago)

coldplay and radiohead are rock for people who listen to hip-hop!! trife, you're out of your depth. i wish people here would listen to real rock, like Modest Mouse

(and since when was Billy Joel 'alt' rock?)

Dave M. (rotten03), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 08:17 (twenty-two years ago)

How are coldplay the pm dawn of rock? What the fuck are you talking about trife?

Michael Dieter, Tuesday, 23 September 2003 09:00 (twenty-two years ago)

coldplay are the pm dawn of rock!!!

No, Coldplay are great, but they aren't that much better than all other rock bands. :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 09:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Whoever thinks that good rock has to make a lot of awful noise needs to change his viewpoint btw. Noise=not good!

18. COLDPLAY - "Clocks" Score: 2.74 / Controversy: 2.21 "Cocks more like"

Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 09:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Radiohead btw. are at their best when they sound like Coldplay or Travis.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 09:14 (twenty-two years ago)

On the piano tip - think Linkin Park's "Doesn't Really Matter".

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 09:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Geir has been OTM so often lately it's...weird.

dave q, Tuesday, 23 September 2003 09:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. I decided to download this song just to see what the fuss was about. My GOD it's terrible. Anyone who says they like this song should feel fucking ashamed!

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 09:59 (twenty-two years ago)

COCKS, more like!

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 10:03 (twenty-two years ago)

This is the only Coldplay song that's any good, but it still has vocals on it. That's the problem with every Coldplay song. Him!

Damian (Damian), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

its weird how pianos always make alt rock better, see also ben folds

No way. Especially not with Coldplay and Ben Folds. The piano was (and is) such a gimmick.

nathalie (nathalie), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

dave otm about geir being otm

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

anyone who dismisses coldplay as too gimmicky is the definition of a funhater (oatmeal - too zesty!)

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 11:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I like this song, but I still think "Yellow" sounds like Dave Matthews (and that's a bad thing).

Nicolars (Nicole), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 11:33 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah, everything else I've heard by coldplay was ass

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

coldplay are gimmick-free

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

But Coldplay's gimmick-free-ness IS their gimmick!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

their gimmick is 'quality real music' but occasionally (well, once) they stumble upon a real gimmick and actually make quality real music!

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 12:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Just think, this thread could so easily have been about Crashland...

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Annoying after the six millionth time, especially the chorus, but other than that, easily Coldplay's best.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

For the people who are perplexed; the reason so many of us hate Coldplay is because the vast majority of their music has no drive or forward impetus; very few of their songs give the impression that they're actually intending to entertain or communicate with anyone who isn't in the band. It's self-indulgent AND boring and everything they do is TOO FUCKING SLOW.

"Clocks" is already five steps ahead of most of their catalogue because it's faster.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Not a huge fan of the band, but I quite like this song....and its miles better than the single they're currently pushing here in the States ("The Scientist," complete with backwards car-crash video). "Clocks" sounds like the track U2 have been struggling to write for the paste couple of years.

Mr.Gwyneth Paltrow's still a bit of a pompous jerkoff, though.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

*pictures vaster chasm of suck*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

'Spies' is the best Coldplay song

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i guess because it sounds more like Doves (apart from the falsetto)

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

"The Scientist" makes me want to punch holes through walls. It's so fucking AWFUL. That interminable whine; the listless, anti-droney plod: the song is so fucking horrifying. "Nobody said it was easy" SHUT THE FUCK UP WHY ARE YOU ON THE RADIO thank God for mp3s and CDs

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

More crap from the shittiest band in the world. I would love it if they died horribly. Next time he's surfing in Oz I hope a shark gets him. Even Travis is better

dave q, Tuesday, 23 September 2003 12:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Another problem with Coldplay is their recordings sound like they miked the drummer with a lamb.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

The only Coldplay song I can listen to is Daylight, which is loads better than Clocks.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

their recordings sound like they miked the drummer with a lamb.

Hahahahahahahahahahaha. I don't quite know what that means, but it's brightened up my morning. Cheers, Dan.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Basically, the drummer sounds like he's doing a decent amount of work but it's all muffled and in the background, drowned out by pained bleating (aka Chris Martin).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Strawberry Swing's their best song.

Real guilty pleasure of mine, this song.

I also like Don't Panic quite a lot.

rhythm fixated member (chap), Saturday, 21 August 2010 17:58 (fifteen years ago)

Real guilty pleasure of mine, this song.
What, Strawberry Swing? Wouldn't say it's particularly guilty pleasure-esque. Just a lovely, laid
back, understated, sunny tune which should be the template for everything else they do here on in. Viva La Vida's a guilty pleasure.

The referee was perfect (Chris), Saturday, 21 August 2010 18:25 (fifteen years ago)

Really like this, too.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_b_ArnIdmVw

Group singing, studio chit chat, the drummer and the bass player take lead vocals, sounds like they're actually having fun.

My online worlds are intersecting! I've known Michael Pop online for years and years, but I've never been to L.A. to hang out with him.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 21 August 2010 22:18 (fifteen years ago)

I meant Clocks was a guilty pleasure - haven't heard Strawberry Swing.

rhythm fixated member (chap), Saturday, 21 August 2010 23:21 (fifteen years ago)

five years pass...

I was at a mall recently, when suddenly I heard a familiar drum beat in the background muzak... "what is this song", I thought... "Aaaah! It's Zeppelin's "Levee's Gonna Break"! Cool stuff, Mall!"

alas, it was not - and I felt my face redden when I recognized Chris Martin's etheral whine:
