RFI: Lone Pigeon

Does anyone know what Lone Pigeon is up to these days?

There were rumours of him working with the Beta Band again around the time that Concubine Rice came out.

Only asking because I've just got the new King Creosote album which reminded me of all things Fence.

Also has anyone heard the new Pip Dylan album (also Fence)?

Ta very much

I'm sorry I can't answer any of your questions but how's the new King Creosote? Is it the 'propor' LP (i.e. the comp from previous things)?

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 10:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes its the 'Proper' LP, I must admit the only stuff I've heard of his before was on the Fence Compilation and the odd track here and there - You can tell some tracks come from different sources though.

Off a couple of listens its good, not a patch on the James Yorkston album, but still good and will hopefully get better with more tries. Very mellow with some lovely tunes on it but seems a bit samey.

LP is in the midst of recording his follow-up with Mum and Dad dude - Joe somethingsomething. Apparently Reni from Stone Roses makes an appearance??? LP might be going back to the Betas for the fourth album. Apparent trouble with LP's record company - or rumours to that effect. Good LP story - Reni saw him asleep outside of his flat. LP saw a bee on a leaf. 'Believe'. He took that as a sign from god and became a christian for awhile. Whether this is true or not I dunno.

didnt like the pip dylan much to be honest. the song i liked the best was a rip off of gillian welch's revelator. i like k.c.'s album - though samey samey is very much in evidence. i was going to do a big fence article in careless talk before i thought better of it.

I wasn't very keen on the James Yorkston LP, perhaps because it had been so heavily praised. I have one King Creosote record (8 O'Clock On The Dot) and I love it although it's obviously very patchy. I like him, I like the way there seems to be a skewed single-mindedness about all he does, marshalling daft noises to a very particular melodic sense. He has trouble when the beats get heavy, I think. He has a very particular way of letting trivvic melody really brst through a song (I suppose I'm saying his songs felt dynamic in a way which Yorkston's material didn't, to me).

After hearing the Fence / Rough Trade sampler I wasn't especially moved to chase after Lone Pigeon or any of the others. Have I made a mistake? Where to start? (And is it possible to get all / any of those other KC records?)

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 11:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Fence have an act on their roster called HMS Ginafore so are automatically a good label. I liked the Pip Dylan LP although think better stuff of similar ilk has been released this year - the absolutely marvellous Alasdair Roberts for example.

there was one track on a fence sampler by Jo somebody called "hold on gordon" that i really liked.

Tim, to me, I think you made a mistake in not chasing down the LP's debut album - rough folk-psyche sketches of the songs that he wrote for the Betas debut plus plinkety-plonkety barrett sing song nursery rhymes. Enjoyable in that 'wow, he's crazy sort of way'. KC's other stuff is very rare. I know how you feel about James Yorkston but put it this way - it is LP singing backing vocals on 'Sweet Jesus' which is a very moving song - dynamo! I think you should perhaps get the LP's album and KC's album. Save your money on Pip Dylan, though.

But to recap DJ Mencap - Alasdair Robert's album is probably the one that you should get out of all of this. But I don't think he is part of the Fence Collective?

lone pigeon's album is a lot stronger than i expected it to be. and i adore james yorkston, especially "man with my skills" which was inexplicably left off the album

Thanks folks!

I should add if we're talking about peculiar folknotfolk that "I See Stars" by the Pines (it's on their 'True Love Waits Vol 1' EP) moves me more than anything I've heard on Fence (this is not a criticism of Fence). I know I've written about this on NYLPM already but the more I listen to it the more it sounds like the best record I've heard this year, certainly in a guitar+melody vein. And it''s been quite a good year, I think.

And it''s been quite a good year, I think.

Agreed. Best yet? Off topic, Tim, have you looked into Johnny Trunk's soundtrack reissues? I got Kes and Pscyhomania (by Frog) and love them both.

st tremaine, Tuesday, 23 September 2003 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't looked in to any trunks for many a long year. I'll keep an eye out.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm thinking of getting his reissue of 'Clangers' and 'Wickerman' soundtrack.

st tremaine, Tuesday, 23 September 2003 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Fence Collective, Alasdair Roberts, et al - all good for autumnal music!

st tremaine, Tuesday, 23 September 2003 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Not really much of a seasonal listening person myself, except when it absolutely demands it, but yr not wrong... Clangers is top tackle, yes get it absolutely. I know Roberts is nothing to do with Fence peeps (he's Glaswegian I think) but he's of similar ilk.

Don't suppose any of you went to the Green Man Festival in mid-Wales a few weeks ago did you? I did. It was pretty aces.
