both had fairly obv ref points, a similar look (except mary chain wore black) and their records had an overload of guitar effects, sugar coated with electricity maybe to cover up for the fact they might not have been entirely sure of what they were doing but still, both sound grebt!!!

or

'surfing usa' vs 'summertime blues'

I don't think the Mary Chain had the same BULK in their sound as Blue Cheer. Simillar distortion (and face-obscuring tonsorial aesthetic), but I don't think the Mary Chain could ever be accused of being particularly heavy (let alone a 'metal' band, as Blue Cheer are often lazily tagged).

Oh, but I'd go with the Jesus & Mary Chain between the two. Their juxtaposition of the sunny/sugar-coated with the barbed'n'viscous sludge just captured my imagination more, but then again, they were current when I first heard them, and Blue Cheer have always been an ancient reference point.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

hmmm...I don't know abt bulk, maybe blue cheer did more of it.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 09:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Blue Cheer, because occasional member Alan 'Gut' Turk was actually a Hell's Angel, whereas JAMC were just a ripoff of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club

''whereas JAMC were just a ripoff of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club''

Are you insaine there is nothing about JAMC that comes close to BLUE CHEER. My god people what is wrong with ? This is an insult to true fans of psychedelic blues. Not to mention those of us who are playing the real thing.

I agree, Dennis. I think Julio was having a bad day.

blue cheer for when i'm stoned.
JAMC for when i'm lonely.

Ian Johnson (orion), Saturday, 20 December 2003 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, Ian ... the solution is, when you are feeling lonely - get stoned!!

Broheems (diamond), Saturday, 20 December 2003 04:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, if only I had the herbs...

Ian Johnson (orion), Saturday, 20 December 2003 04:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't be lonely, Ian...

Herb Alpert, Saturday, 20 December 2003 04:45 (twenty-two years ago)

... we'll always be here for you.

what he said. i never noticed this thread before, apparently, or i would've gone crazy ape bonkers on it.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Saturday, 20 December 2003 05:18 (twenty-two years ago)

the main difference, as i see it, is that blue cheer were a rock band and JAMC were a pop band. and the JAMC were fags, but that's really beside the point, innit?

Ian Johnson (orion), Saturday, 20 December 2003 05:19 (twenty-two years ago)

JAMC...
even with all the mad distortion a few beautiful moments did come from them... this cannot be said of BC

''This is an insult to true fans of psychedelic blues. Not to mention those of us who are playing the real thing.''

so you're a 'real' fan of psychedelic blues huh? is that like being a 'real' punk but only a million times worse? arsehole.

well to these ears there is a similarity in riffage, the sounds that are coming out of my speakers when I play the records.

ok ref points are slightly different: JAMC velvets/stooges, blue cheer hendrix/blues but it sounds similar. I'll try to play some of this again tonight.

''the main difference, as i see it, is that blue cheer were a rock band and JAMC were a pop band. and the JAMC were fags, but that's really beside the point, innit?''

so can we have a translation of this one? pop= fags?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 21 December 2003 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, pop = fags.

not in a bad way, but that's just kind of the way it is. also, JAMC = much more image conscious = much more faggy.

Ian Johnson (orion), Sunday, 21 December 2003 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

blue cheer had their pics taken => image concious.

Interesting that you folks were having this conversation right at the time the Cheer toured the UK. Was it vibes or did you know? Don't really get all the comments about them not knowing how to play or that they didn't know what they were doing ... folks didn't 'get it' ... taking music to another level, physical connection between the musician and audience

reebechka, Sunday, 15 February 2004 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't know they were still going!!! I just love the first two albs (I picked them up sometime last year).

my comment abt them 'not knowing' is a guess done on comparison with other things...I guess if they had any technique then it isn't very obvious.

Don't know abt 'taking music to another level'. Its more like it dawned on all these bands that electricity and the ability to amplify things was the greatest discovery of the 20th century, and not the invention of a new instrument.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 15 February 2004 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Feh, Blue Cheer were great, but "Psychocandy" changed my fckng life in some hard-to-quantify way - I don't think I've ever bees as THRILLEd by a rekkid as that one when I first heard it, so MARY CHAIN!!!1!!
