I haven't listened to this album in maybe years, but I found it for cheap last night and am falling in love all over again. my first Jay-Z album, and in some ways still my favorite. i think it's kinda slept on, since it's not canonized like Reasonable Doubt and didn't sell gajillions like every album from Hard Knock on.

we knew him from "Ain't No", but what convinced my bro to buy the record was "The City Is MIne", which sounded kinda cheesy even back then, but the beat and the verses are killer, and Jay as Verbal Kint in the video was great (I still think of Michael Rapaport as Detective Rappin'port). great investment, though, this album rules. I'd say it pisses all over Hard Knock Life, which was only ok beyond the singles.

and holy shit, "Face Off" f/ Sauce Money! best Trackmasters beat ever, even better than that Nick Cannon song.

"I Know What Girls Like" was and is awful, though...and that's not kneejerk '97 Puffy hate, either, it's maybe the worst thing he did that whole year. the drums are just loud and harsh in a bad way.

ooh, now I'm on "You Must Love Me". definitely was my favorite introspective-Jay-album-track all the way up until "This Can't Be Life".
