The Box 'Advertising Feature' spots: classic or dud

A portal into a strange netherworld of never-gonna-be boy bands and solo teen girl performers whose entire 'marketing spend' goes on a five minute home-made video clip of them talking about how their album is "very diverse" interspersed with clips of their is-it-even-possible-that-music-this-diluted-exists-in-the-modern-world low budget video for their one-shot-at-fame cover version?

or

The lowest music on television has ever sunk?

(Inspired by their latest such 'spot', which features Myleen (sp?) from HearSay on how "diverse" her new classical with a dance beat-type album is intercut with perhaps-influenced-by-Vanessa-Mae video clips and her describing how now she has got the popstar thing out of her system and can concentrate on her true music. Verily, this must be the nadir for The Box - possibly even worse than the legendary Ride a White Swan lite-trance woman of last year, who at least had a surreal element mixed in with the direness).

did you see that ones guys advertising spot, and they showed a bit of his video, and it was basically just him playing piano on a white backgroun, and poorly shot too.

heh, those spots are a portal, as you say, but the music is usually pretty terrible. but they are fun to watch sometimes.

Yeah, maybe I should have said comedy classic or dud?

Who was that guy you mention? I thought he might have been some Fame Academy or Pop Idol reject if he's the one I'm thinking of (lots of jumpers, distinctly non-popstar looks, single video camera footage filmed on what looked like the stark white Blue Peter set of yesteryear of him playing a number of different instruments, miming to a self-composed song so unmemorable that it makes David Sneddon look like Johnny Cash by comparison).

thats the one, the jumpers bloke!

Strangely, we never heard of him again!

The Myleen one seems to be the first time I've ever seen anyone I've actually heard of 'stooping' (if that's possible in her case) to such low measures. Anyone know of any other on-their-uppers pop stars who've had to take this last resort? Did Gary Barlow end up here promoting his second solo album (imagined script: "yeah, it's really diverse. It's good to have got the whole Take That thing out of my system so I can concentrate on what I really want to do").

barlow had a second solo album?!?

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 09:24 (twenty-two years ago)

He certainly did, and there's loads of hilarious footage of him reduced to self-promoting it by phoning up local radio stations and offering them exclusive interviews and guest appearances, then being hung-up-on by said local radio stations mid-call. This is probably from five or so years ago, mind, but if yer that desparate, the call of The Box 'advertising feature' can only be all the more tempting!
