According to AMG Dead Prez are going to release a new record in October, and it's called "Get Free or Die Trying". Is this true? Are there any singles out? Won't 50 Cent mind about the name? Will their name still be DPZ, or is the feud with Loud over?

The second of their mixtapes (previewing tracks from the LP) is out now. It's not too shabby.

The tune they did on the Erykah Badu ep is pretty good. I think I may like their production more than anything.

Dead Prez....I've never figured out if I love them or hate them...but they didn't make me giggle on "They Schools":

Then you know they math class aint important 'less you addin up cash
In multiples, unemployment aint rewardin
They may as well teach us extortion
You either get paid or locked up, the pricipal is like a warden
In a four year sentence, mad niggas never finish
But that doesn't mean I couldn't be a doctor or a dentist

Um...sorry to disagree, but I usually prefer my dentists to have finished high school....root canal by M-1 or Stic anyone? Anyone?

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 25 September 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

oops they did make me giggle....

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 25 September 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

hey, amateur dentistry is no laughing matter.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 25 September 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Trife said something about them hooking up with Roc-a-fella, which if that happens they'll be lucky if it drops by October '04.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 25 September 2003 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Roc-a-fella pushes everything back.....maybe they can sign Guns n' Roses and put out Chinese Democracy while they're at it....Did Kayne West and MOP ever come out?

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 25 September 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Kanye and Memphis Bleek have been once again pushed back to early '04, i think they're still shooting to get MOP out in the fall.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 25 September 2003 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm excited for MOP and Kanye, but they can push back Memphis until doomsday as far as I'm concerned.....also, when's ODB dropping??

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 25 September 2003 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I would not hold my breath for a Dirt McGirt full-length, even if I gave a damn.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 25 September 2003 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

you are correct - nothing is certain in the world of ODB....are you not a fan, or (like me) do you fear for the quality of the new album as compared to the first two? just curious.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 25 September 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

just ambivalent in general.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 25 September 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I feel bad for accidentally hijacking this thread with release date conjecture. I don't know much Dead Prez, but I remember liking their song on the 2 Fast 2 Furious sdtk, I need to give it another listen.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 25 September 2003 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I reviewed the record for Spin (or tried to anyway) back in the srping when it still called RBG. Really, really solid, one of the best hip-hop records I had heard this year. It was way more Tupac than the first record, less academic/snottily nationalist ... with songs about credit card fraud/sticking it to the employer, ambushing the White house, alcoholism and cop-killing fantasies. Beats much more staccato, too.

Have no idea if they made wholesale changes or not.

O'C

Chris O., Thursday, 25 September 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I have this one on my computer; it's the one with the single that's also on the 2 Fast 2 Furious soundtrack, right? If it is then the best song is the last on, The 20; it's creepy!

Yeah but I was just thinking about DP earlier today, trying to figure out whether I was a racist for not agreeing with their politics and for not liking what I'm perceiving as sort of like adding violence to pander to the young militant black kids that they must think are their core audience (instead of the white poli-sci majors that actually are).

Dan I., Thursday, 25 September 2003 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, they're obviously trying to connect with the street, but it really muddles their message that now instead of assassinating corrupt politicians (or whatever they used to advocate), they're victimizing the pizza delivery guy an out-group member by race only, not class.

Dan I., Thursday, 25 September 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

My objection to which is, I guess I should have said, that it seems like an injection of willful ignorance just to sell records!

Dan I., Thursday, 25 September 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

"intelligent rap" is often dumber than "dumb rap"

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 25 September 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

'hell yeah' is a good song but sticking up the pizza delivery boy for being white is pathetic and racist yeah, btw matt i think the point of the they school lyrics was that just bcz you dropped out/got expelled from a underfunded worthless h.s. doesnt mean you cant get the fuck out of there and succeed on your own terms like g.e.d.--> tech school --> medical college, obv theyre not saying you can become a doctor w/o going to college, just that you dont have to fuck with the system youre given

trife (simon_tr), Thursday, 25 September 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I had thought of that, but it just struck me as funny when I first heard of it....I'm by no stretch saying that there isn't much to criticize about the us public school system, I just thought it came off as pretty hilarious on first listen.....I (kind of) like Dead Prez, but too often they just crack me up because they are so humorless and oftentimes completely off base.....but so was Public Enemy, who I adore.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 25 September 2003 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Plus I always thought the Coup were smarter, funkier and more fun.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 25 September 2003 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

cringe.

Dan I., Friday, 26 September 2003 02:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I think their humourlessness and seriousness is part of their appeal. I like The Coup just as much, but I've got nothing agains good ol' agit-prop. I mean, sometimes things just aren't funny! Also, I never understood the typical ILM stance that you must only like "dumb rap" and dislike "intelligent rap". If the so-called "intelligent" rappers are talking about the real world and real problems (instead of sci-fi flicks or quantum physics), what's wrong with that? To me, "Know Your Enemy" was the first piece of music to put the post-9/11 world into proper perspective.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 26 September 2003 05:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Or you could just recognize the total invalidity of the "dumb rap"/"intelligent rap" dichotomy, which is what I think a lot of ILM people tend to do.

Dan I., Friday, 26 September 2003 07:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Not if you replace "dumb"/"intelligent" with "mainstream"/"undie", which is what I think Matt H. meant.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 26 September 2003 08:14 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, but that one's just as bad.

Dan I., Friday, 26 September 2003 08:57 (twenty-two years ago)

six months pass...
saw 'em live tonight with some boston local acts. not the best venue, not the best crowd. fulla natty-dreaded hippie anarchists and a few nice locals. highlight was natch the remake of "juicy". the beat blew everything else in their set away. was funny when i danced to the aaliyah remake but everyone else was all offput. no shoutouts to aaliyah, cristopher wallace or even project pat or mumia.

pretty lacking in energy, i thought, though sometimes the lyrical skills were pretty hot. the lyrics are pretty direct, not that clever, and the "fuck the system" energy was pretty lacking and depressing when it showed in mainly fuck school type stuff and unreconstructed garveyism.
