..."Tokyo Storm Warning" is two minutes too long. I'm also perversely fascinated with the "Wave A White Flag" demo on the original Ryko CD reissue of My Aim Is True, because it chills me to the bone every time I hear it.

Dave M. (rotten03), Friday, 26 September 2003 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I suspect once I hear the rocksteady "new lace sleeves" it will be in my pox

Douglas (Douglas), Friday, 26 September 2003 11:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw Elvis at a small club in Providence, RI in August -- his first club date in many years, according to his publicist. He started with "I Hope You're Happy Now" (my favorite EC track) and went on from there. He definitely rocked.

"I Want You" (live last year)

OTM.. When I saw him he closed with this, segued into Almost Blue and it was HAUNTING

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Friday, 26 September 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw a girl who'd found her consolation
She said "One day my Prince of Peace will come"
Above her head a portrait of her father
The wilted favour that he gave her still fastened to the frame
"They've got his bones and everything he owns
I've got his name"

Well you can laugh at this sentimental story
But in time you'll have to make amends
The sudden chill where lovers doubt their immortality
As the clouds cover the sky the evening ends
Describing a picture of eyes finally closing
As you sometimes glimpse terrible faces in the fire
We'll I'm the lucky goon
Who composed this tune
from birds arranged on the high wire

Who on earth is tapping at the window?
Does that face still linger at the pane?
I saw you shiver though the room was like a furnace
A shadow of regret across a young mother's face
So toll the bell or rock the cradle
Please don't let me fear anything I cannot explain
I can't believe, I'll never believe in anything again

I really just want to draw attention to "American Without Tears #2", a brilliant, brilliant, brilliant song. The lyrics are magnificent from the opening line onwards- "...it was December 1965 in Caracas" and i just love it.

Officer Pupp, Saturday, 27 September 2003 09:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Btw. "My Brave Face" is a brilliant song, but I chose to list songs by the performer Elvis Costello, not the songwriter.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 27 September 2003 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

"I'm Not Angry" is so great, how did I forget that one!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 27 September 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

geir - he sings backup on "my brave face"!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 27 September 2003 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I was really tempted to put "American Squirm" at the top, but that wouldn't be right.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 27 September 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

goddamn - for someone who hates them tv dinners you sure eat alot of them motherfuckers!

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 27 September 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 27 September 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

cf. "bob george"

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 27 September 2003 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

geir - he sings backup on "my brave face"!

He also sang backup on "Tempted" by Squeeze. Does that count too?

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Saturday, 27 September 2003 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

alphabetical and off top of head:

"Beyond Belief"
"Clubland"
"(I Don't Want to Go to) Chelsea"
"I Hope You're Happy Now"
"Man Out of Time"
"New Lace Sleeves"
"Tear Off Your Own Head (It's a Doll Revolution)"
"Temptation"
"Watch Your Step"
"When I Was Cruel no. 2"

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 27 September 2003 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

did he write 'tempted'?

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 27 September 2003 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

No, "Tempted" is a Difford/Tilbrook composition, like most every Squeeze song. Costello co-produced the song and most of the album that it comes from, East Side Story. He sings backup on that song, and another one called "There's No Tomorrow."

I *cannot stand* Every Day I Write The Book. Someone please defend this song and its irritating tweeness (could be wrong, haven't heard it in years etc)

Dave M. (rotten03), Monday, 29 September 2003 04:16 (twenty-two years ago)

the keyboard sounds like a typewriter

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 29 September 2003 04:17 (twenty-two years ago)

plus his most (only?) convincingly happy love song

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 29 September 2003 04:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I like it cos I always like jaunty Langer-Winstanley productions, come to think of it though you're right about the tweeness and even the lyric is a bit Stuart Murdoch - so think of it as a 'stylistic exercise' in a style that hadn't been invented quite yet!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 29 September 2003 07:23 (twenty-two years ago)

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a song being "twee"

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 29 September 2003 07:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely this is POX's return to it's roots (High Fidelity)

I Want You has been absent from some of these lists: many of you are mentalists.
Lipstick Vogue has been absent from all of these lists: you are all complete mentalists.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Elvis Costello's new album is fucking awful

retort pouch (retort pouch), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

"There is absolutely nothing wrong with a song being 'twee'"

etc.:
Almost Blue

The Only Flame in Town

I have to admit: although I admire parts of Costello’s post-Blood and Chocolate discogaphy, I can’t say that anything in it tops any of the songs listed above. There’s a decorous quality to most of the "later" work—even, or especially, the "rockers." And besides, it’s just not as catchy or dense with musical ideas. Brutal Youth and the Bacharach collaboration are probably the best things I’ve heard from the last minus-30 years. But they are marred by aforementioned decorousness. In BY's case, the production is chock full of "clever" instrumental touches that nearly ruin some wonderful songs; in the case of the Bacharach collab, Costello is writing songs outside of his vocal range.

inspired by watching this, esp. the miraculous version of "man out of time":
