Kristin Hersh and Michael Stipe - You´re Ghost

Not sure whether Michael co-wrote this, but Kristin's voice on her own makes much more sense with that lyric.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Friday, 26 September 2003 05:20 (twenty-two years ago)

there was a few years there at the turn of last decade where Stipey was doing bv's for every US-college-singer/songwriter and their repsective dogs

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 26 September 2003 05:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard Roky Erikson for the first time recently and realised where he got his vocal style.

Destroy: Soft Cell's Where the Heart Is - every so often the bvs go in unison with the lead - it's just lazy!

Jez (Jez), Friday, 26 September 2003 05:55 (twenty-two years ago)

'ang on Colin are you saying "Your Ghost" is good or bad with Stipe's backing vox? I like it, personally - I think their two voices compliment each other beautifully.

As does her voice with Bob Mould's on "Dio" by the Throwing Muses so a big thumbs up "search" on that one.

The "ultra blanc" vocals behind Ray Charles were provided by the Ray Charles Singers, who eventually went "solo"(unsure if Mr. Charles fired them or if they left him), but kept the name. Their
incredibly ghostly recordings improve when played at half-speed.

>The "ultra blanc" vocals behind Ray Charles were provided by the Ray >Charles Singers, who eventually went "solo"

au contraire, mon ami...the vocals were supplied by the Jack Halloran Singers. The Ray Charles Singers were led by a blanc Ray Charles, from Illinois, I believe. I have never seen evidence of the ebony and ivory duo-Charles ever meeting, even in an elevator. But I'm sure a contrary witness will step forward from this list...

Leee (Leee), Friday, 26 September 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

The best part of "Subculture" remains Peter Hook's bass....so much so that I can't be arsed to give a damn about the backing vocals one way or the other.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 26 September 2003 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Very true.

Search in particular the following wonderful examples of great backing vocals:

Beach Boys: Their early career ballads, such as "Surfer Girl", "Girls On The Beach", "The Warmth Of The Sun" etc.

Most of the "A Night At The Opera" by Queen - besides "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Death On Two Legs" and "Prophet's Song" in particular

10cc: Again, a lot of stuff, but particularly "Une Nuit a Paris" from "The Original Soundtrack"

ELO: A lot of stuff here too, particularly "Wild West Hero"

Steely Dan: "Babylon Sisters"

And then, Prince backing himself on "Kiss" is a true classic too.

notable for the manner in which each lyrical line of the prechorus and chorus is sung first by the backing vocalists (kut klose) and then by the artist (sweat). very well arranged, his repetitions weaving deftly between their words, as if they're an effeminate projection of his thoughts.
