LONDON (Reuters) - White U.S. pop star Justin Timberlake (news) won best R&B act at the Music of Black Origin (MOBO) awards in London on Thursday, pipping divas Ashanti, Beyonce Knowles (news), Kelly Rowland (news) and Terri Walker to the top spot.
Timberlake, the only male nominee for best R&B act, had also been in the running for the best album award, which was carried off by rapper 50 Cent along with the awards for best hip hop and best single for "In Da Club."
Big Brovaz, a six-piece group from London, claimed the award for best newcomer and also tied with Punjabi MC in a joint award for UK act of the year.
Guitarist and singer George Benson won a lifetime achievement award and funk band Kool & The Gang won an outstanding achievement award.
The MOBO awards celebrate the spectrum of music of black origin -- R&B, hip hop, rap, jazz, reggae and gospel -- and reward performers of any color. The majority of awards are voted for by the public.

The MOBO's are basically there to enforce a black music industry identity which was hitherto lacking in the UK. And i don't think anyone can argue that it hasn't had a kernal of influence since it's conception, with black British artists becoming alot more commercially viable than they were 5, 10 years ago.

the year so solid won loads and rushed the stage
by rushed you mean took about 10 minutes to collect the award cos of insisting on having about 40 people up there waving bottles of Moet around and what have you - or was that at the Brits (where they got a sympathy gong for Best Video)?
