LONDON (Reuters) - White U.S. pop star Justin Timberlake (news) won best R&B act at the
Music of Black Origin (MOBO) awards in London on Thursday, pipping divas Ashanti, Beyonce
Knowles (news), Kelly Rowland (news) and Terri Walker to the top spot.

Timberlake, the only male nominee for best R&B act, had also
been in the running for the best album award, which was
carried off by rapper 50 Cent along with the awards for best hip
hop and best single for "In Da Club."

Big Brovaz, a six-piece group from London, claimed the award
for best newcomer and also tied with Punjabi MC in a joint
award for UK act of the year.

Guitarist and singer George Benson won a lifetime
achievement award and funk band Kool & The Gang won an
outstanding achievement award.

The MOBO awards celebrate the spectrum of music of black
origin -- R&B, hip hop, rap, jazz, reggae and gospel -- and
reward performers of any color. The majority of awards are
voted for by the public.

You see, Horace, race is a social construct. The same way Punjabi MC is considered black in the UK and Asian Indian in the US, Justin Timberlake is considered white in the US and black on awards shows.

It just seems like a silly criteria to present awards for. I mean, what part of popular music DOESN'T have some black origins? Even country has some.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 26 September 2003 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

deerhoof (i haven't even heard them, i'm just acting as today's jess stand-in)

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Friday, 26 September 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

It is kind of silly - the thinking basically was that these people (OK not justin) generally get ignored in favour of U2 and Dido at the Brit Awards and since they make better music they ought to have something.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 26 September 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

MOBO is the only award show dumb enough to give awards to Big Brovaz

and the Best Garage award never goes to a garage act

stevem (blueski), Friday, 26 September 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

i would watch the Better Music Awards

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Friday, 26 September 2003 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

except they'd probably give it to u2

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Friday, 26 September 2003 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

U2 are/were good ;)

also like most awards show, the distinction between Lifetime Achievement and Outstanding Achievement is never clear enough

stevem (blueski), Friday, 26 September 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

"all he did was not die!"

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Friday, 26 September 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Deerhoof is great, Mitch

Sonny A. (Keiko), Friday, 26 September 2003 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Are Big Brovaz a Chris Morris thing? I just saw a video of them. It was based on the awful awful awful opening credits of 'Friends'. WTF x 1000. I'm not feeling that shit AT ALL.

Enrique (Enrique), Friday, 26 September 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

you can download mp3s here. I recommend "Holy Night Fever", which uses a blues riff, albeit in an "experimental rock" setting, but it still very much implies "black origin".... Anyway, picking on a Japanese girl for not being in touch with her black origins reminds me how silly picking on anyone (ie pasty white indies) for not being in touch with their "black roots"

Sonny A. (Keiko), Friday, 26 September 2003 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Panjabi MC isn't considered black in the UK, but the songs he makes are of equal black/hindu origin.

The MOBO's are basically there to enforce a black music industry identity which was hitherto lacking in the UK. And i don't think anyone can argue that it hasn't had a kernal of influence since it's conception, with black British artists becoming alot more commercially viable than they were 5, 10 years ago.

Well, I don't think it's a bad idea, I just think they're going about it in a weird way. Most of the nominees are from the US where "urban" music is king. So it seems from my North American POV that they're just celebrating people who are already pretty damn celebrated in the first place.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 26 September 2003 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

haha that friends video thing was unbelievably bad

robin (robin), Friday, 26 September 2003 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Oddly, the Torygraph seems not to have sponsored the best garridge act this year. What gives? I'd luv to see Charles Moore actually meet So Solid Crew and explain his paper's somewhat complicated relationship with young black Britain.

Enrique (Enrique), Friday, 26 September 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

the MOBOs 2001 were the most enjoyable awards thing ever. the year so solid won loads and rushed the stage and oxide and neutrino dedicated their award to the playa hataz. the year trevor nelson and kelis presented, genius. amazing live stuff from r.kelly and mis-teeq. last years were great too but not quite up to that 2001 standard.

why hate big brovas, that video is cute enough and they're effectively an s club for kids who like rap, what's wrong with that?

pete b. (pete b.), Friday, 26 September 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

and nu flow was a good tune too. it was!

pete b. (pete b.), Friday, 26 September 2003 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I'll agree more or less in re 'nu flow'.
But the video must die.

Enrique (Enrique), Friday, 26 September 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i quite liked nu flow as well, but after i saw that friends video i couldn't believe i had ever liked anything they had been involved in

robin (robin), Friday, 26 September 2003 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

'Nu Flow' too Lionel Bart meets Outkast as Tom put it. they're just too trite for me - as are U2 these years in fact.

the year so solid won loads and rushed the stage

by rushed you mean took about 10 minutes to collect the award cos of insisting on having about 40 people up there waving bottles of Moet around and what have you - or was that at the Brits (where they got a sympathy gong for Best Video)?

stevem (blueski), Friday, 26 September 2003 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks Sonny, i'm downloading that now.. (and i really didn't mean nuthin' by my accusations, i was just being ridiculous.)

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Friday, 26 September 2003 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
What to do with indie kids who insist the MOBOs are racist against whites?

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Sing "Hey Ya" at them?

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Good call.
