And I wrote at length about it FIVE YEARS ago!

(Actually, I just stumbled onto this, and wanted to post the link.)
(But I STILL like how he raps. So fuck all y'all.)

chuck, Friday, 26 September 2003 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

The verse at the end of "We Need A Resolution" is like sooo perfect

Sonny A. (Keiko), Saturday, 27 September 2003 00:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never listened to a Timbaland & Magoo album though

Sonny A. (Keiko), Saturday, 27 September 2003 00:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Plenty of people like his rapping. He sounds like a funny frog!

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Saturday, 27 September 2003 01:02 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah ive repped for timbs skills on ilm before, his compulsive rakim plagarism lately is offputting though

trife (simon_tr), Saturday, 27 September 2003 01:04 (twenty-two years ago)

tim's ok. magoo is a poor man's q-tip

JasonD (JasonD), Saturday, 27 September 2003 01:35 (twenty-two years ago)

every rap on cop that disk is copped, right?

its some sort of concept gag i guess.

(ps new missy single with diwali & gossip folks mangled is hella good)

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Saturday, 27 September 2003 02:09 (twenty-two years ago)

the last album was great. indian carpet shoulda been huuuuuuuge.

scott seward, Saturday, 27 September 2003 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

also chuck i've seen that lou reed "there was a chair/i sat on it" gag around before i think in yr. book. is it yours originally, or where's it from?

(on the last album aaliyah's "i am music" was the best eulogy for her ever, tho when it just showed the graffiti at the end of the cop that disc video i almost cried)

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Saturday, 27 September 2003 02:12 (twenty-two years ago)

The real question is: Are you the only one who likes the fact that Timbaland looks just like this guy Mikey* who I knew in highschool who was at least 6 years older than me and who's big brother was the weed hookup when all else failed because he sold the skimpiest sacks ever?

*Mikey was also known as "Bone" because he grew up in Cleveland and hung out with Bone Thugs & Harmony

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Saturday, 27 September 2003 02:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i really like how he raps on that last song on the 2nd aaliyah album (but it really doesn't sound like him), and sonny is right about we need a resolution too. it's funny, i agree with all the descriptions in your article but that same collection of observations just makes me think he probably shouldn't make rap albums! i mean, it was kind of funny and puzzling to listen to the firsttime or 2 but after a while it becomes like a really boring friend calling you up and telling you the same go nowhere stories and ignoring your 'i'm going now' signals.

minna (minna), Saturday, 27 September 2003 03:27 (twenty-two years ago)

it can't just be the boringness of course, there are lots of 'boring' rappers that i don't mind listening to... i guess it's just that timbaland's rickety flow (you can tell how tall he is!) is hard to ignore and magoo and missy are equally cartoonish and don't fade into the background very well... most boring mcs are a lot more streamlined

minna (minna), Saturday, 27 September 2003 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

magoos voice is horrid.... but timbo & magoo still made some pretty ace music. 'luv 2 luv u' is one of my fave hiphop tracks ever. such a sick sample...

Michael Ng (Mike Ng), Saturday, 27 September 2003 04:13 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, i second luv 2 luv u and raise here we come.

big time.

reo fordecor, Saturday, 27 September 2003 06:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I wonder how much it's Magoo's *accent* (as in: the region/city he came from) or if that's *just his voice*. Am I making sense? I really can not stand his voice, much too tin.

nathalie (nathalie), Saturday, 27 September 2003 06:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, I like that track on Doc's Da Name 2000 where he switched up "Luv ta luv ya luv ya luv ya" with "Luv ta fuck ya fuck ya fuck ya".

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Saturday, 27 September 2003 06:20 (twenty-two years ago)

i dont notice that magoo has much of an accent. i think its just how nasal his voice is...

Michael Ng (Mike Ng), Saturday, 27 September 2003 06:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Saw Timbo at the VMAs and boy did he look fat. Has he always been that big? It was like Rodney Jerkins was back. Do he a Missy share body matter so when she lost it, he gained it?

Nick H, Saturday, 27 September 2003 11:47 (twenty-two years ago)

>>i've seen that lou reed "there was a chair/i sat on it" gag around before i think in yr. book. is it yours originally, or where's it from?<<

Wow, good question. I must have stolen it from *somewhere.* I never come up with things that good. I forget if it's in my books, though.

chuck, Sunday, 28 September 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Lester Bangs did it first, I think. Rob Sheffield used it too when discussing Morrisey in the mid-90s.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 28 September 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Timbaland is indeed a fine rapper. What I can't stand is his, or anybody's cameo interjections. People always talk about how you can always tell its a Timbaland production, but part of what makes that so easy is his damn voice appears for no reason.

BOOM bumbum THWACK! BOOM bumbum THWACK! The night we met I knew that... vs. Boom bumbum PHIL SPECTOR! Boom bumbum PHIL SPECTOR! The night we met I knew I...

Sure everybody's made this complaint before but it needs to keep being made until things CHANGE. NEVER FORGET.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 28 September 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, I usually like his cameos better than the whoever's doing the NON-cameo!! - like, I never figured out what the big deal about Aaliyah's voice was supposed to be (assuming it WAS supposed to be a big deal); i mean, she sounds fine, she puts the songs across i guess, but she always sounded fairly average and anonymous and replaceable to me (am I the first person ever to say *that*? Maybe not.) But Timbaland's voice and those baby gurgles and the weird noises totally made those records for me, inasmuch as anything did.

chuck, Sunday, 28 September 2003 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never complained about the baby gurgles and weird noises. Ever.

One time I know his voice as an interjection worked for me was during the video for "Cry Me A River," where we get his "damage is done" line from the specific POV of his chaueffer. But without the visual, it doesn't make sense why Timbaland is saying the line rather than J.T.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 28 September 2003 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Rob Sheffield used it too when discussing Morrisey in the mid-90s.

Yeah, but he's an asshole!

the baby gurgles and weird noises

That same celebrated baby gurgle sample can be heard in the Cure b-side, "Babble."

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 28 September 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

you really must explain to me why Rob Sheffield has earned your ire. He's one of the five critics I really enjoy reading. Or maybe it's four or three.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 28 September 2003 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Rob Sheffield is EASILY one of the handful of best music critics of the past decade. No contest. (Which doesn't mean he's not an asshole, but I've never *known* him to exhibit any notable asshole traits.)

More Timba: I LIKE that his voice shows up for no reason! The No Reason is part of what makes it FUNNY! (And in general I'm not a fan or cameos on rap or r&b records, either; they usually seem pointless to me, just like when Albini makes PJ Harvey go loud and soft for no reason. But for some reason, Timba's pointlessness strikes me as one of his main points -- one he doesn't get enough credit for. Or something. I realize I'm probably contradicting myself, but that's how it goes.)

chuck, Sunday, 28 September 2003 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

That's the best part of Cry Me A River! It always gives me chills, so I guess he did it right

Sonny A. (Keiko), Sunday, 28 September 2003 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

ten months pass...
I like timbaland but i need to know what the name of the track that is in the middle of the cop that disc video PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!
