remembering the "old you": record store blues

was in the cd store today, flipping through the SALE section, my small, thin fingers nimbly sorting through jewel case after jewel case of olivia newton john and boney m karaoke when i am momentarily startled (STARTLED!) to find this cd by "wheat"( rubbish name, really) that i remember wanting rather desperately about 4 years ago when, not only could i be arsed to listen to shambolic low fi jangly quite pretty indiepop, but t'was my lifeblood (nb no strokes jokes allowed on this thread). i picked it up, looked at it for a couple seconds, and then put it back - filing away a bit of myself forever. felt vaguely depressed. also they didn't have "ready to die" which i came to the store to finally purchase.

and you?

I have not been in a record shop today.

(I'm not sure there is an old or new me on this front, I think it's just a continuum.)

This happens to me all the time, esp. with electronic stuff that goes out of style or doesn't seem half as exciting 6 months later. Can't think of any examples though... Also: I got both the Biggie albums for free and I think they should like issue them to everybody

three things off the top of my head that i'm already not buying:

1. neo-southern rock
2. punjabi and/or dancehall flavored hiphop
3. cd's

i have a much worse problem which is going ahead and buying these things that i'm no longer interested in. your way is much better in a financial management sense!

there are currently only two places to buy cds where i now live.

1 is a small mom'n'pop shop (approx 15 sq feet), the other is a pawn shop (2 copies of nellyville, both scratched, and most of the discs on otts list)

Oh, bah -- not sure what "Wheat" you are talking about, but Wheat's "Per Second Per Second ... Every Second" is a power pop charmer due out next month in the states. Good boys deserve favor.

Dock Miles (Dock Miles), Sunday, 28 September 2003 05:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't think of a good example but I can see your point, Mitch. Having said that, I own the first two Wheat albums and you passed up a gem the other day, regardless of which one it was. You might want to reconsider. And the new one, as Dock Miles mentions, is great as well. It'll come out at the end of October.

This isn't something that happens to me in record stores so much as it does now that I'm living in a huge dorm with a great number of my peers; there are the kids in the NOFX sweatshirts (me in middle school) or the kids really into [The Get Up Kids/Converge/Poison The Well/The Weakerthans] (me freshman year of high school).

It's just weird, I guess.

It's like nostalgia that makes me cringe and grimace.

Ian Johnson (orion), Sunday, 28 September 2003 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Kind of like what Ian said - my feeling of this comes from other people rather than stores. I go to people's houses and see albums in their collections that I got rid of ages ago, and I think for a moment, "If only I'd never stopped liking that album... what kind of person would I be today." Then I think, "One with bad music taste, mwahaha!" Then I feel alternately sad and relieved about having become a (seemingly) different person from the one that thought Pearl Jam were the best band ever.

I wish I still liked all those records I don't like anymore. I tried to listen to Sebadoh the other day. It just made me sad, and not in a sad indie kid way.

i know exactly what i mean
also when you see that a band you used to love has a new album out that you didn't even know about, when two or three years ago you'd have been reading about it/looking foreward to it for months

robin (robin), Sunday, 28 September 2003 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

definitely. I get this looking at my cd shelves and think, "oh there's one i used to play all the time, go on give it a spin", end up playing it for two seconds and then putting it back on the shelf for another year or so.

Most of the stuff I listened to in high school I now loathe just because it represents that time, even though objectively it's not that bad. Then there are some other things from later on that I listened to a LOT, and every time I see a copy of one in a store I feel like buying it over again cos I cherish the idea of it so much, yet I don't actually ever listen to the ONE I STILL HAVE in case I accidentally taint my notion of it being so wonderful (because objectively, it surely won't be anymore).
