Recently got hold of 'Tern', the saxophonist's trio with Louis Moholo and Keith Tippett. His playing on soprano has the interstellar melodic scales of a coltrane with the sensitivity and 'logic' for improvisation of someone like lol coxhil.

This guy is good on tenor too but the tuneage on soprano is addicitve.

One of the very best Cds yet in Corbett's atavistic reissue series and since I haven't seen him around too much (unlike Brotzmann or bennink, whose early sides have already been reissued here but both of whom have a big discog on a variety of labels anyway) I'd say this is one of the reissues of the year and if you like improv but only buy one or two discs a year, then I'd recommend you give this a listen.

but tell me more if you know...

Have you heard his work with Weekend? A really odd idea - Young Marble Giants play Bossa Nova..but it really worked imo.

La Variete - their album, has been rereleased by Vinyl Japan. There are a couple of extra tracks, but unfortunately, not the single - A View From Her Roomm, which is wonderful. I've got a feeling that I still have a spare copy of the latter, which I found in a charity shop. If I can find it, you can have it.

Wasn't he in Working Week too? A very dull and very of-their-time 80s outfit who were determinedly anti-rockist/ anti-racist/ anti-sexist and were a bit like a Socialist Sade? I've seen Larry Stabbins a few times in the last few years, in various settings and in various line-ups (including solo) - and he's never really done it for me.... yet

I was listening to the single version of "Venceremos" yesterday (it features Tracey Thorn, Robert Wyatt and Claudi Figueroa) and it is really a trivvic, airy record, all set to be sneered at by those who like their jazz 'real'. I'm not sure Working Week ever matchined it, but very few people have. (I love Weekend too.)

Working Week were borne out of Weekend, but were a different project altogether - kind of yuppie funk. I liked Inner City Blues but prefer the stuff Alison Statton went on to do with Ian Devine.

yeah, D*ve O'H*gg*ns laughed at me when I played him Weekend stuff with Larry soloing on it (this was back in our Uni days)

julio - i'm not sure Weekend/Working Week is your cup of tea either (but you never know)

The last two minutes or so of the "Venceremos" 12" would definitely be Julio's cup of tea, I think, as would "Stella Maria" the free 12" with the first album which has both Keith & Julie Tippetts, plus Louis Moholo thrashing arrhythmically against the '80s drum machine.

Stabbins isn't half a miserable old sod, though. "When we did Centipede, Bob Fripp made us all queue up outside the studio to come in and do our bit...we had to do the big freak-out ending at ten in the morning 'cos of studio time so none of us was feeling particularly freaky...jazz is shit, wish I'd been a punk" etc. etc. (this is all when I interviewed him for a fanzine way back in '84).

I just thought this guy did improv but it turns out he's even more interesting and will play with anyone (or at least doesn't appear to be snobbish, and will take risks and i really like that).

I will definetely look out for weekend.

Also I bought the new wire yesterday where I read a small review of Stabbins' solo record for emanem. probably get it.
