finally getting around to reading the jaz/nas thread
so are all dre's lyrics ghostwritten?
and who else writes them?

It didn't occur to me until I was told either, but it seems really really obvious, doesn't it?

Sonny A. (Keiko), Monday, 29 September 2003 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

snoop and the d.o.c.

jonas lefrel (jonas lefrel), Monday, 29 September 2003 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Who wrote his verse on California Love?

Sonny A. (Keiko), Monday, 29 September 2003 01:59 (twenty-two years ago)

excuse my ignorance but who is the d.o.c?

robin (robin), Monday, 29 September 2003 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

also,is this an "open secret" that people in the know know,or is it well documented/credited?

robin (robin), Monday, 29 September 2003 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

well documented

the d.o.c. had a big hit album no one can do it better in 1989 (which maybe had as much, or more, to do with establishing dre as a force as straight outta compton), BIIIIIIG hit single with "it's funky enough" which was the biggest non-delicious vinyl west coast mainstream hit to date at the time - bigger than "express yourself", bigger than any ice-t or too $hort singles. he got in a car crash and basically lost his voice.

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 29 September 2003 02:48 (twenty-two years ago)

presumably em writes some of his stuff? forgot about dre?

who else does jay ghostwrite?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 29 September 2003 02:59 (twenty-two years ago)

foxy brown

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 29 September 2003 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

The D.O.C. came out this year with a Chronic-like album (featuring mostly younger up-and-coming rappers, since he can't talk above a whisper). It's called Deuce, and it's terrific. Just while we're on the subject.

Phantroll, Monday, 29 September 2003 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Big L had a tune called "Ghostwriter" (if memory serves), that was all about how he wrote all the rhymes for the stars. Although he wasn't hard enough to name names...

Conor (Conor), Monday, 29 September 2003 03:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Does Eminem write his own lyrics? I would imagine so, since I've heard him freestyling a number of times. (of course, it's possible that they were staged)

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 29 September 2003 03:25 (twenty-two years ago)

it was Mad Skillz who did "Ghostwriter", and there is a live version where he names names, which is on here:

Al (sitcom), Monday, 29 September 2003 03:33 (twenty-two years ago)

and it bears mentioning that the hook of "Ghostwriter" is a Jay-Z sample ("and for the right price, I can even make your shit tighter") from "Ride or Die", which is addressed to someone else he wrote for, our buddy Ma$e.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 29 September 2003 03:40 (twenty-two years ago)

so doesnt all this lend more credence to the theory that jay-z really is god/jayhova, etc

Vic (Vic), Monday, 29 September 2003 04:07 (twenty-two years ago)

now that i think about,i can completly see how jay-z had a hand in still dre,i can almost imagine him rapping it

robin (robin), Monday, 29 September 2003 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

the d.o.c. was this guy from dallas who knew dre's cousin and moved out to LA during the recording of straight outta compton and does the opening verse on "parental dizcretion is advized" and with ice cube wrote some of dre's and eazy's verses in that time period.

after straight outta compton, he recorded his album with dre for real cheap and around the time it was released, he was driving his honda prelude up 101 through the valley around 5am on a saturday morning and hit the center divider and went through the front windshield head first, severing his vocal cords in the process. the doctors reattached them and he had several surgeries to enhance his voice but as noted above his voice is now a gruff whisper.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 29 September 2003 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the D.O.C. is also the mystery "sixth" NWA member in the "Straight Outta Compton" cover photo. "No One Can Do it Better" is a great record, easily on a par with "Eazy Duz It" and the other NWA-related stuff that was coming out at the time.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 29 September 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Aside from maybe Kill at Will or Amerikkka's Most Wanted, No One Can Do It Better is maybe my fav NWA related solo album...the Grand Finale, the closer, is basically an NWA song, and has the best Ice Cube verse ever....also probably Dre's most consistent pre-Chronic production album....DOC is super underrated...

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 29 September 2003 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

What?? Isn't that Arabian Prince on the cover of Straight Outta Cpt?

Fabrice (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 06:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt, OK I haven't heard the DOC's album, but better than The Chronic or Doggystyle?

Nick H, Tuesday, 30 September 2003 09:55 (twenty-two years ago)

al,i can't listen to that ghostwriter track from my computer, who does he name?

robin (robin), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

better than The Chronic or Doggystyle?

yes, but not quite as enjoyable, if that makes any sense.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

there aren't any real surprises in who Mad Skillz calls out...Puffy, Foxy, Mase, Jermaine, Will Smith.

oh, and my favorite example of Jay's ghostwriting is "Young G's" on No Way Out, where Puffy is practically doing a Jay-Z impression it's so obvious.
