Commercially released, or just downloadable somewhere. Any decent Felix Da Housecat mixes (was looking at the Bugged Out one curiously).

eskimo 1, 2 and 3

jed (jed_e_3), Monday, 29 September 2003 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

the illest of all time is dj rectangle - vinyl kombat

trife (simon_tr), Monday, 29 September 2003 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

DJ DB, History of Our World Part One
Jeff Mills, Live at the Liquid Room, Tokyo
Fatboy Slim, On the Floor at the Boutique
Triple R, Friends
Larry Levan, Live at the Paradise Garage 1979 (on West End)

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 29 September 2003 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

lo fi allstars on the floor at the boutique is good too, any mix that opens with no diggity and closes with prodigy's 'out of space' can pretty much do no wrong

trife (simon_tr), Monday, 29 September 2003 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, it's excellent. either Chemical Brothers mix CD smokes, too.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 29 September 2003 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Andrea Parker - DJ Kicks

Sir Leee (Leee), Monday, 29 September 2003 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

solid steel - the first one - dj food and d.k.

jed (jed_e_3), Monday, 29 September 2003 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

NOT the Coldcut JDJ, which fucking blows

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 29 September 2003 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i agree!

jed (jed_e_3), Monday, 29 September 2003 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Kruder & Dorfmeister's DJ Kicks album is fantastic and has been the basis of their enduring credibility since it came out SEVEN YEARS AGO. They've done nothing whatsoever to improve on it, but who cares cos it's great.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 29 September 2003 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

And of course the Avalanches' wonderful mixes, especially the one called (at least on my copy) "Live (Cornerstone)" (very similar to their Ibiza mix too). And their first Breezeblock mix too...

(have to agree about the Coldcut JDJ, ludicrously overrated stuff, except for the "One Blood"/d'n'b tune bit, which is deadly).

Conor (Conor), Monday, 29 September 2003 23:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll second the Avalanches mixes, that first breezeblock one is also called "Gimix".

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 29 September 2003 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

the Coldcut JDJ mix is superb but fucking old ('95/'96) so let's not get into another argument there - go for the Osymyso 'Wood' and 'Glass' mixes available from his website instead

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Second that Andrea Parker recommendation.

And adam, since you asked, Felix's Excursions is a must-own!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

matos otm about live at the liquid room
and for the other greatest techno mix i've ever heard, surgeon live at tresor '98 (which wasn't released, but you should have no problem downloading it) is unbelievably good
also, surprised no-one has mentioned immer by michael mayer either
and if you like that, theres two excellent tobias thomas mixes that were released as well

robin (robin), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I was hoping Ethan had more suggestions.

The Button Down Mind Of Dan Bell by Dan Bell

Mike Taylor (mjt), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

hi michael!!! ok like i said i really love rectangle but the only other mix ive got by him is this years 1200s never die which is good but kinda samey, worth it for the first two tracks alone (a history of mixtapes, and his always-superb year so far wrap up), theres a really corny dj out now named dj lt dan who has done some wonderful tapes, theres one of premier blends, premo beats with recent verses by 50, jay, pac, clipse, outkast, big tymers, etc, its completely genius and fun to listen to... he also did a somewhat bizarre one of jay rhyming over all the beats from gods son, and a couple pac tributes, overall his name has a mark of somewhat cheesy quality... oh green lantern has been on fire lately! all solid tracks, good shady records specific ones, not too 'mixtapey' in having so much generic shit, and his blends are always really inventive and weird. kay slay has done some good beef mixes in that vein too, just look for DRAMA KING in big letters, and the dj kay slay cd that came out this year as an offical release cd is ok, i thought it was weak at first but some of the songs grew on me, worth picking up if you cant go the bootleg route for some reason, it still doesnt hold up to classic major labels mixes like dj clue's backstage mix or any funk flex (been really into the exclusive em track on flex and big kap's 'the tunnel' lately so check for that)... if you want more underground shit check for the first and second beat junkies, theres always a few annoying tracks on each from whiny groups that never went anywhere but mostly just unheard classic joints from big names of the underground... that dj babu solo duck seazon mix looked like it might be good too, some new unreleased shit by beatnuts and alchemist, i never copped it though, oh if you want non hiphop stuff the mr scruff breezeblock is really good too, just bouncy and goodnatured as you would expect... i dunno the problem with up-to-the-minute rap mixtapes is that theyre always going to share the same couple exclusives and also put shit on just bcz its new and unreleased, not necessarily bcz its actually good... so usually its better to wait for a year end mix that just throws together all the best of the past year, vinyl kombat is like that and is still my fav mixtape ever

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 04:23 (twenty-two years ago)

oh shit thats long... well ok you know how to make me post to a thread then

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

if yer downloading, "Deetron live at I love techno 2002" is probably my favorite techno mix set right now. Very nice mix of dancefloor oriented, housey influenced, techno, with all kinds of detroit classics (alarms, groove la chord, at les) thrown in there, and some of the big (well big for techno) anthems from that time (pontape e.g.) It might be too 'poppy' for 'serious' techno headz but that is a plus in my book. Oh yeah, it's mixed flawlessley on 3 decks, burning through songs at a really fast pace.

tylero, Tuesday, 30 September 2003 07:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i still love the BRA FSUK3 mix froma few years ago. off the wall and wonderfully entertaining.
for the hip-hop mixes i go with dj yoda's mixtapes. but, they are not to be taken too seriously ..
new name on the block .. Soulsavers - Fear and Loathing on the Wheels of Steel .. taking the David Holmes route of old 60's soul nuggets/movie samples and all sorts of extras. not commercially available but certain record shops in Mancr stock them. highly recommended.

this is a killer

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

people saying the coldcut jdj mix blows are crazed, maniacal nutballs and quite possibly deaf, too! it is an absolute classic of its time and stands up today! i've been really enjoying a couple of the futureprimitive sound mixes lately though, especially the bombshelter djs one. also dug out the geoff walker and stewart white mix on force inc the other day, which is great and michael mayer's new fabric mix, which isn't out yet but is worth getting a hold of, if only for thge opening and closing tracks, but everything in between is good, too...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 11:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i really like that geoff white/stewart walker lp, too (this is the link dave stelfox posted above).

also, mike t's recommendation is a good one. the follow-up - "the button down mind strikes back!" by dan bell is also very nice.

one of my favorites from this year is jori hulkkonen's essential mix from february.

i'm gonna check that deetron mix...

Jonathan (Jonathan), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i had wanted to put this on trife's old "recommend me a house mix" thread, but i'll say it here: Bad Boy Bill's "Banging in London". pros: tacky flourescent cover, generic rave flyer fonts, jeff mills paced mixing, scratching, hip-hop samples, very femme men doing diva vocals, weirdly reverbed spinbacks, fake radio shout-outs, mind-bogglingly hard minimal tracks from commercial "proper" house artists (armand van helden, old tracky bastard, etc), corny anthems (eniac v. novy's "pumpin"). really the best mix of mainstream AND underground house i've ever heard. ok, but it has no microhouse.

Brainfreeze and Product Placement by Cut Chemist and DJ Shadow.

DJ Milo's Food: Volumes 1+2 are skill, as are the Chemicals Live At The Social Vol. 1 and Monkey Mafia's Live At The Social Vol. 2. Muzik did 2 great ones with Erol Alkan and Cassius before they shut.

direct_program, Tuesday, 30 September 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

"I'll second the Avalanches mixes, that first breezeblock one is also called "Gimix". "

- I was actually thinking of what might then be the second one, (which I always thought was the first one) which starts with the Crosby Stills Nash and Young "just a song before I go..." number... I have always thought of Gimix as a different thing (and a very fine one, although I ultimately prefer the above mix). Sorry to bog things down here... just get 'em all!

Conor (Conor), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

another coldcut hater here I'm afraid.

Jed, Eskimo III might be my favorite mix EVER.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 16 September 2004 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

This week.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 16 September 2004 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

It's all breathy synthy prince-luomo madness. Wonderful.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 16 September 2004 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

we should just get married already.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 16 September 2004 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Come to San Francisco! Oh, wait...

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 16 September 2004 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

...your wife won't mind.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 16 September 2004 00:36 (twenty-one years ago)

But the governor will!

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 16 September 2004 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Where's this Ronan mix w/ the Tiefschwartz tracks that Skykicking was talking about? I want....

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Thursday, 16 September 2004 01:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Can someone give me some concrete details about these Eskimo mixes?

Philip, see this thread for Ronan's mix. Not sure if it's still up though.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 16 September 2004 01:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Tim - http://www.discogs.com/label/Eskimo+Recordings

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 16 September 2004 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha ha the first three tracks on Eskimo III are bang bang bang classics ("Do It Now" deserves more praise!). That Dance Modern comp looks choice too.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 16 September 2004 03:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, Do it Now is excellent!

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 16 September 2004 03:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Andy Smith, 'The Document.' Haven't heard 'Document 2' . . .

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Thursday, 16 September 2004 03:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Do It Now is AMAZING.

The Glimmers sure do pull off some unbelievable three-in-a-rows in their mixes sometimes. I think I prefer Eskimo II to Eskimo III though.

And speaking of Eskimo, the new Headman mix is quite nice!

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 16 September 2004 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Is that Dance Modern Ronan?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 16 September 2004 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah that's the one.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 16 September 2004 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

btw did you get my mix ok Phil? I'd love to hear what you think.

I'm still playing your schaffel one alot, it's great.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 16 September 2004 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

it's tough to license for mix set compilations. I've known compilations where less than 30% of the tracks they try to license actually end up on the finished mix

nick.K (nick.K), Thursday, 16 September 2004 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

This thread inspired me to pull out "Do It Now". WOW I love that track.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 16 September 2004 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I know, the break with the "love is all around you but you don't believe it's real" is just "wow!".

Whenever we have Eskimo III in the shop I play it first thing in the morning. Sadly it's now sold out, though our shop has sold so many copies of the Eskimo comps that Eskimo are thinking of repressing some more for us!

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 16 September 2004 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i've missed these Eskimo mixes completely but they look great, thanks for the reco

the neurotic rassafrassa of harrumph (blueski), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Now I'm playing the Tom Middleton mix of it which is good but then any remix is just a crime it must be ORIGINAL EXTENDED VERSION EVERY TIME. Although I bet Luomo could have fun with it.

x-post yeah me too somehow steve.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

BTW Ronan did you hear that Mei Lwun mix. you need it!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I think that sentence looks better without the question mark - more assertive. Like when you said about Smagghe "Where does he fine so many great tunes."

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

me? ha I don't even remember that.

What's the Mei Lwun mix? what's it a mix of?

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

btw special delivery for you there Tim.

http://www.client-online.net/client/ecard1.htm

for me this really does make a strong case for the Rex The Dog=Tom Middleton thing. That said I just don't know if Tom has enough of "it" anymore to do such good stuff. All his "Tom Middleton" stuff lately has been rubbish. That said maybe he's exhausted from being Rex the Dog, in a sort of Peter Parker/Spiderman scenario. "Middleton you bumbling idiot" etc.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

RONAN I made a thread about it to which you posted! It's a mix by the head of Uno Records (called UNO: Mixed by Mei Lwun), which is a San Francisco house label, only this is far and away the best thing that's ever come out of San Francisco house. Tracklisting:

Mei Lwun - Underwold Thang
Andy Caldwell - Don't You Love Me
Mister J - Hot Chix
Mei Lwun - Too Late
The Streaks - The Feeling (The Post Rave Dub) (Ronan you would adore this)
The Debonairs - Miami Vice
Chicken Lips - He Not In/The Fog - Been A Long Time (Accapella)
Mylo - Drop the Pressure
Andy Caldwell - Pushin' (Andy's Dub Perspective)
Scissor Sisters - Comfortably Numb (ATOC Dub)
Ean Golden - Golden Theme (Mei Lwun Edit)
Yosh - Do Watcha Do (Andy & Mei Lwun Remix)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah I remember now, if you said the "Uno" mix I'd have known. I keep meaning to find that yeah.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

why so convinced that Rex The Dog is SOMEONE Ro? i'm sure it could be the case but could be new blood just as easily?

the neurotic rassafrassa of harrumph (blueski), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

When he first released a 12" on Kompakt there was some implication that he was a well-known British producer working under a pseudonym. Can't remember where it originated though.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Twitch may have said it.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm still betting on Jeremy Healy

the neurotic rassafrassa of harrumph (blueski), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

is that mix officially released Tim? I can't seem to find it on slsk.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

its strange to hear the opening to Eskimo III now because Tessio is so pitched down, you kinda feel like your being forced to move in slow mostion.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

er. motion

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I was out with work a while back and they go "you know that song with the lyric 'I guess you turn me on, when you're gone', can you guys NEVER PLAY THAT AGAIN".

weirdos!

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

well it does go on a bit

the neurotic rassafrassa of harrumph (blueski), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

this is far and away the best thing that's ever come out of San Francisco house

Not so fast - I'll be digging through crates later tonight!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 16 September 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

That Mei Lwun mix is pretty tricky to get hold of, especially as half the people who have it demand a pound of flesh before they'll upload. It's well worth it though, try searching for "uno mei lwun", or you could look in choppedupman's share. If someone could guide me to Headman's Dance Modern thing I'd be most grateful.

Ronan - liked your mix a lot, that Tiga mix of Peaches is one of my favourites this year.

Also Speicher CD2, for schaffelless doof-doof-doof - wahey!, and Ellen Allien's My Parade, predictably gloriously unpredictable, are very good.

Mike (mratford), Thursday, 16 September 2004 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

apparently mayer has admitted that rex the dog IS a well know brit producer but he's not copping to who in print

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 16 September 2004 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

SF house thread for Adam please

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 16 September 2004 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Tessio could go on forever as far as I'm concerned. Those people are fools.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 16 September 2004 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

"is that mix officially released Tim? I can't seem to find it on slsk. "

Yeah though admittedly I got mine as a promo review copy (and proceeded to ignore it for two weeks) and I haven't seen it in the shops.

"I was out with work a while back and they go "you know that song with the lyric 'I guess you turn me on, when you're gone', can you guys NEVER PLAY THAT AGAIN"."

Just the original or the Moonbootica mix too? Banning both would strike me as administrative unfairness. You could appeal that decision surely.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

BTW Ronan the bit of that Rex the Dog track (is it the Client Remix?) I was able to hear sounded good - but isn't it just a reprise of "We All Ride In Daddy's Car" or whatever that b-side to "Prototype" is actually called?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 17 September 2004 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

no it's slightly better, I think, though I better go listen to the b-side again just in case.

if I can safely rob the Headman mix promo we have in work for the evening then I will and I'll let ILXors know if I've got it on slsk.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:23 (twenty-one years ago)

It was hard for me to tell - realplayer gives my laptop attacks of anxiety for some reason. RtD is really starting to form a full-fledged aesthetic though - as distinctive as Pearson or Black Strobe.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 7 October 2004 11:12 (twenty-one years ago)

That Goya Music Presents... The Selector Series Vol 1 Mixed by Alex Attias that Andy K raved about a while back is hella good in parts. Does it go without saying that the best broken beat tracks are the ones that are the ones that sound like incredibly tricksy extended James Brown funk breakdowns? It should.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 7 October 2004 11:18 (twenty-one years ago)

More details here.

Sorry, sound warning on that link.

Mike (mratford), Thursday, 14 October 2004 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

three electro mixes by luke eargoggle & rutherford. i liek the brembo mix best.

:|, Thursday, 14 October 2004 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

omg! tiefschwarz!!!!

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 15 October 2004 09:20 (twenty-one years ago)

It certainly *looks* fantastic - can't wait for it.

I finally got a copy of the Poker Flat Volume III comp - from listening to the first few tracks it sounds even *more* up your alley than Volume II, Ronan, very electro.

Not a DJ mix but has anyone heard the new Phonique album?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 16 October 2004 06:29 (twenty-one years ago)

we got the new 12 "X-Attack" on Déssous in last week, it's very good. deep acid type stuff. I must check out Poker Flat Volume III. At the moment we have some Jesper Dahlback collaboration, ADJD or something, and "She's Heavy Metal" by the Martini Brothers. They're both good without being great necessarily.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 16 October 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

that tiefschwarz mix does indeed look excellent

tricky (disco stu), Saturday, 16 October 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I read about it in DJ the other day and am interested. Due to legalities, the Kelis and Ratpure remixes don't appear.
