What act/artists do you hate watching on TV?

Regardless of looks or musical ability, which act/artists make you want to headbutt the television screen when you see them?

Here’s a few off the top of my head.

Mariah Carey – Without You.
If the song wasn’t enough to make me want to slit my throat, seeing the video puts me in a homicidal rage. Her facial expressions, the way she stomps her feet, gestures with her hand, and beats her chest because she’s feeling so emotional. And what’s with the audience? Why are they clapping, whooping and cheering after every bit of vocal dexterity? This isn’t good. It’s shite. The song’s shite. Her singing’s shite. What’s wrong with these people?

The Hives – Hate To Say I Told You So.
Although it could be any of their videos. What’s with the facial expressions, the looks of intense concentration and anguish? They all looked constipated and as if they’re about to take a collective dump.

Damon Minchella - the bass player from Ocean Colour Scene.
For the way he looks so nonchalant while playing his bass in a vertical position the way Bill Wyman used to. You can tell he’s thinking “I look like a bass maestro when I play it like this.” Well you don’t, you look like a twat.

Celine Dion, but sometimes I find her macabre/desperate/bullimic/obvious-ape-shit-insane/overly-fake-emoting visage to be kind of mesmerizing....but she is the grossest performer to watch on earth, period....

Phil Collins. Coldplay. I want to say Sting but I'm usually laughing hard enough that I can't say I truly am hating it.

System of a Down

Lucinda Williams. Lou Reed. Bonnie Raitt. Melissa Etheridge. Of course, these are all musicians I hate under any circumstance.

>I want to say Sting but I'm usually laughing hard enough that I can't say I truly am hating it.

Admit it, you envy him. Many of you here envy him...you despise the precision of his top notch bands...you say you laugh but you are laughing in contempt. Contempt of his ability, knowing that the musicians you prefer to listen to will never have the musical ability that Sting has. You may call his music "boring", "cold", "middle of the road"...when you know deep down inside that you hate him because he is fucking good at blending so many different styles of music into his own little brand of creative thinking man's pop...you hate how he dares to dabble and experiment with forms other than that "rawkin" guitar bass and drums. you detest how he can create songs as platforms for world class musicians using odd time signatures that groove and flow so easily as if they were playing in the basic four/four that we are so used to being subjected to.
Face it, you hate him because you know damn well that he deserves to be as obscenely successful as he is.

I should know,...I hate him as well. But I know and am willing to admit that he possesses more talent than most of the half assed artists that get lauded so much around here. You know it too, AND THAT IS WHAT YOU HATE THE MOST ABOUT STING.

well, you got the contempt part right.

s1utsky (slutsky), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 03:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Creative thinking man's pop?
Sting's become more and more dull with each successive album. He's spending more time maintaining his tantric orgasms than crafting anything worth listening to. Sure, it makes a nice little jingle for a car commercial but he hasn't done anything creative or thoughtful in years.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 03:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I still really like "Ten Summoner's Songs", even after reading 197 reviews extolling the hilarity of the punning title. =/

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 04:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Y'see, his last name is Sumner and there are actually 11 songs, lol

DIDO - She sometimes affects the same arm/hand movements that you
see r&b divas doing when they perform a piece of vocal acrobatics. I don't mind it if it's Beyoncé or Whitney etc. but I don't see why Dido's vocals justify that kind of physical expression.

CLEA - The way that the three fast syllables of the phrase 'Download It' are accompanied on-screen by three simultaneous wiggles/shimmies of each band member's hips.

Madonna.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 05:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I was watching the Wim Wenders installment of the PBS blues series tonight and forever screaming as it kept cutting away from Skip James to all the awful shit that Phil Freeman just listed, eight posts back. (Well, Melissa Etheridge wasn't there, but Nick Cave was.)

Burr (Burr), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 05:31 (twenty-two years ago)

U2, especially bono

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 08:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Everclear

Luckily you don't seem 'em that often anymore.

Andrzej B. (Andrzej B.), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate seeing bands/artists with choreography. So basically, just about everything.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

'Smirkin' James Walsh of the dreadful Starsailor. Craig Nicholls is probably the most punchable person in rock.

Ben Dot, Tuesday, 30 September 2003 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

If I have to see Lyle Lovett on TV once more, I'm going to boot my TV. Like the man, but do we truly need to view the poodle hair....again?

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

If anything I'm jealous of Sting for being in a pop band with Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland.
