and tomorrow afternoon that dream comes true. for reasons too boring to delve into i'll be in the audience. this is insane. line-up is The Darkness, Big Brovaz, Texas (featuring Kardinal Offishall), Emma Bunton, Clea, Electric 6 and Blur...

might be fun to see Justyn and Dick doing their thing - if only Kardinal would do a hardcore freestyle then this would counter the torture of the rest of the line-up nicely. my plan is to get drunk beforehand to ease the pain tho. should be fun.

anyone here ever been in the audience for a TV recording of music show? anecdotes please

A good friend of mine works on the show and has been promising to get me in the audience for ages - shame I'm too lazy to actually get around to asking.

I've been to:
Top Of The Pops: Work - had to stand on a platform towards the back to avoid being crushed by teeny bobber hoards. Spoke to a mate of the Pied Pipper's who told me he was a graphic designer. Lee from Blue trod on my foot in the bar. Blue had to do five takes because they kept singing out of tune.

CD:UK: Work - they instuct you to clap with your hands in the air so it shows up better. Was really good fun, lots of bouncing around, despite the fact the room is huge and you are all squashed down one end.

Later With Jools Holland: For fun. I had a stupid bet with my mate Paul that I would have married Elvis Costello within five years. That was around three years ago and he still sends me e-mails asking how I'm doing. We went to see the show being recorded because Elvis was appearing. EC waved at me, much to Paul's chagrin. If you can stand boogie woogie piano I'd really recomend going. You see some reall good artists in a much more intimate setting than you ever would normally. Mary J Blige was fucking fantasic and just across the room. You also get to see the artists who are not performing dancing away to other people (who'd have thought Mary J would get so into Soundtrack of Our Lives?).

Texas (featuring Kardinal Offishall)

Am I reading this correctly?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I was just about to pose the same...

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

i've been watching some old tapes of Later with Jools (including a brilliant episode from '95/'96 featuring Stereolab, Nigel Kennedy, Bo Diddley, ZZ Top and er, The Bluetones) and i really would like to go to it actually - will apply for tickets for the forthcoming new series probably

and yes Kardinal Offishall is on the new Texas single - he's quite rubbish on it tho, appropriately enough

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

It is really cool Steve, although only friends of the band get to sit at the little tables at the front drinking wine, which is what I really wanted to do. Bah.

As alluded to a few weeks ago (possibly on ILE but I forget) I recently had the pleasure and the privilege of witnessing the recording of a Girls Aloud "special" at the CD:UK studio by London Bridge.

Somewhat unsurprisingly, I was the oldest person there by some 10 years; an old half-remembered John Peel interview kept popping into my head, where he's talking about still going to Extreme Noise Terror gigs well into his 50s, his main concern being that everyone else there'll think he's just there to stand at the back and look at the bottoms...

Anyway, no chance of that, as I was cajoled into "dancing" to Sean Paul by the short but forceful warm-up guy. And then suddenly I was standing next to a podium-mounted Cat Deeley! *SCREAM!* Funny, I was expecting her not to be in the slightest bit pretty in the flesh, but...well, she is. And dead friendly and self-deprecating too. Wow.

Naturally I scarpered, for fear of *actually appearing on camera* during a link or something, but I hovered in the background for the GA interview. The grubbly little racist one was away, but the others were all present and correct. None of them was especially interesting tho, and the ginger one looked *absolutely terrified* throughout.

Then they did a terrific medley of their three singles, in order - that 12 minutes made it all worthwhile! (two run-throughs, y'see - one with forework things that didn't really work properly and one without) Now I want to see them at a proper gig...

And to cap it all, I bloody missed the show when it was on telly! Feh.

forework=firework obv.

god i am dreading the prospect of Big Brovaz having to do their song in several takes...good job they've got that wanky bar...

Stevem how do you fancy joining NYLPM so you can blog this once-in-a-lifetime experience?

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

cool, it occurred to me i could write something about this actually. it will be Swygartian in it's acerbic malice....OR Ewingsian in its unbridled praise :)

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

It would be good to run as an article actually and since we're updating on Friday, hint hint.

Oi...

Clea could be fun, seeing as how their career basically ended at #21 on Sunday.

If you get close enough to Murray or Bacon, please throw something at them for me.

Bother, I need to think of a new article. Hmm...actually I have an idea!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I was on the Old Grey Whistle Test - You could see me sitting at a table next to James (you know, the band James) as they were being interviewed in the ICA bar. I was sitting next to Gavan Whelan, Ted Chippington and Robert Lloyd. Cor!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 06:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Stevem, what do you look like, so we can spot you on Friday? I *think* I remember seeing an article about you in your DJ guise but have totally forgotten what you look like.

Nick H, Wednesday, 1 October 2003 08:03 (twenty-two years ago)

i will be doing my best to remain off-camera at all times i think, sorry to disappoint you

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Well?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 2 October 2003 09:17 (twenty-two years ago)

wait for the FT article ;)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 2 October 2003 09:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Dr C - I used to have that episode of Whistle Test on tape. It was Betamax tape, mind. Whatever happened to Ted Chippington? I was 'singing' one of his numbers the other day.

I went to see Radiohead (and Zwan, Martina Topley-Bird, Pat Metheny, Ibrahim Ferrer, and Bob & Marcia) on Later With Jools Holland this past May. Even getting in is a story in itself. It was bizarre, I don't even really remember much of what happened... All the bands played along with Ibrahim Ferrer to kick the show off, and they seemed to have fun at that... I was really close in on one side of Radiohead for the whole show, and watching all those bands from odd angles was a bit funny. The best thing was observing bands watch one another (a member of Radiohead who shall remain nameless was rather pointedly reading a book during Zwan's performances). It all seemed to be over rather quickly, and with all the screaming and clapping they had us do during the show, by the end I had no voice. After the show was more interesting... A lot of the bands/guests were hanging around the parking lot, along with a few fans and BBC employees... Got to witness Pat Metheny and Miranda Richardson basically slobbering all over Radiohead in a most embarrassing fashion...
All in all, from the moment I got in to the moment it ended, an incredibly surreal experience...

Melissa W (Melissa W), Friday, 3 October 2003 07:33 (twenty-two years ago)

do they ever have to do second takes on Jools or is it all just one take? if the latter, as i imagine, then cool

someone at work (three jobs and one continent ago) got a whole mess of TOTP tix a couple years back, and i went along. i remember having a great big silly blast of a time, straight from when we got the tix -- which read '18-34 Years of Age Only. No Crusties.'

Which all seemed rather strange when we learned who was on: Beck (fun), Another Level (not), Culture Club (decidedly crusty that eve), Emma Spice + Tin Tin Out (dissapointing, as we knew *a* Spice would be on the show, but we were hoping for Geri), and some flavor-of-the-mo' patois-rapper with dance skillz.

Was also at the filming of the New Years' Eve 2k TUBE special, which was very odd. Prince performed in the mid-afternoon, about 6 hours before anyone else taped. They ran through the song twice -- but only once with HRPurpleness. The second verison featured the band AND crowd miming for reaction shots.

The studio for the main taping was divided, so we missed quite a number of performances, tho the only one I remember feeling abd about was Belle+Sebastian. Robbie Williams was fun, Paul McCartney's face looke dlike it had melted off, tho they did some nice stuff whena couple of the Travis lads joined them for a song or two. And I remember Beverley Knight doing something purty, but I always did like her.
